ANGLE LAKE SC NEWSLETTER VOLUME 86 ISSUE 1 SPRING 2020 1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: As we face this global crisis and isolation, I would like to stress the importance of our ALSC community that you have built with your participation and volunteerism. Although we cannot meet for several weeks, we can plan for a future of celebration and togetherness. Meanwhile because of our infrastructure and the connections we have maintained over the years we are in a great position to assist each other through this crisis. Focusing too much on what is happening ‘out there’ on things that are beyond our control, can affect our lives to the detriment of our wellbeing. This is why I truly believe that our little local organization, the ALSC, is more important now than ever. Our goal in the ALSC is to bring neighbors together, to help them bypass all the news and social media of which they have little or no control, to open their eyes and hearts to the true nature of our shared humanity. Through our events we have developed and nurtured the love and caring that manifests when we get together and socialize in a face to face atmosphere. Although we will not be able to do that for awhile, we can still foster community and care for one another. We have volunteers who can assist one another with any difficulties you may be having during this crisis. If you need food delivered, if you need personal assistance, if you need information, if you need a phone call and a chat volunteers are waiting to find out who they can help. This is why I am so passionate about the ALSC and how it can play a part in bringing positive change and enrichment to our lives. So, with that said, I enter my 13 th year as your president of the ALSC. I sincerely hope you all realize what a fantastic Board of Directors you have overseeing the ALSC. These are individuals from all walks of life who have the common purpose of leaving a positive impact on our community and right next to them are all the volunteers who unselfishly help put on our various events in many ways. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

As we face this global crisis and isolation, I would like to stress the importance of our ALSC community that you have built with your participation and volunteerism.

This is why I truly believe that our little local organization, the ALSC, is

more important now than ever.

If you need food delivered, if you need personal assistance, if you need information, if you need a phone call and a

chat volunteers are waiting to find out who they can help.

This is why I am so passionate about the ALSC and how it can play a part in bringing positive change and enrichment to our lives.

So, with that said, I enter my 13th year as your president of the ALSC. I sincerely hope you all realize what a fantastic Board of Directors you have overseeing the ALSC. These are individuals from all walks of life who have the common purpose of leaving a positive impact on our community and right next to them are all the volunteers who unselfishly help put on our various events in many ways. “The Angle Lake Shore Club provides unique events year-round for the residents living on and around the shores of Angle Lake in efforts to build a stronger community.”

This is what we, your board members, work so hard to achieve, and we do it by creating events that introduce neighbors to other neighbors. I believe, for the most part, that we have succeeded in those efforts. More importantly it is our members, neighbors, family and friends who motivate us to continually strive to be better each year. Improvement can only be measured by your participation at and help with our ALSC Events.

I challenge you to ask yourself, ‘AM I CONTRIBUTING TO HELPING BUILD A STRONGER COMMUNITY?’ either in conjunction with the ALSC or in some other form. I can’t stress enough how important it is for you to not only participate in our events but to volunteer to help us as well. Before I joined the club, I was lucky to know the people that lived on each side of me. After getting involved in the club I can say that I now know 80% of the people that live on or around the lake and that makes for a unique and wonderful neighborhood.

With that said, let me just address a few items you should be aware of for 2020:

NEW ALSC OFFICERS, BOARD MEMBERS AND VOLUNTEERS

We welcome Nancy (Jones) Erickson as our new Secretary who will be replacing Drew Clark who has served at that position during the past two years. Drew will be missed, and I want to thank him for his work and dedication in always getting our board meeting minutes out in a timely fashion.

We would also like to welcome to the board one of our newer residents, Donna Bennett as our new Newsletter Developer who will be replacing Drew Clark. Drew has served at this position during the past 3 years and left big shoes to fill as he was continually improving the quality of the newsletter to attain a level of quality that surpasses most everything else I’ve seen.

Also joining the board is Robyn Todd who will be joining the newsletter team to act as Task Master to help ensure that the newsletter gets out on time. She will be relieving Fuzz Hill of this duty who will remain as our Publisher and Blog Site manager.

Finally, we want to welcome two other individuals to the ALSC group of volunteers. First is Jennifer Marcum who will back up Tani Rae as our club’s Official Photographer. Second is Sarah Edwards who will be an assisting Tani Rae, our Chief Editor, for our club’s newsletter articles.

UPCOMING SPRING EVENTS

The purpose of our organization is to bring people together and create a strong sense of community. In light of the global pandemic, we are temporarily amending our purpose to keep our community safe by keeping people apart to slow the spread of Covid19. We are canceling the Bunny Dock Hop and postponing the Fishing Derby. However, we are hopeful that we can have the Fishing Derby later this year. We will continue to monitor all health and governmental updates, and if a safe opportunity presents itself for a Fishing Derby later in 2020, we will make every effort to uphold this treasured tradition!

4TH OF JULY FIREWORKS AND FLARES

show for 2020 amped up to help celebrate SeaTac’s 30-year anniversary. More to come on this in the Summer Newsletter.

Also, I am sad to report that Russ Austin passed away late last year. I mention this not only because he was a great husband, father, friend, neighbor, past president and staunch supporter of the ALSC he was also, along with his boys Ben and Greg, responsible for setting out the floating lake flares each year to signal the start of the fireworks show. After I talk with the boys to see if they will be continuing this tradition, we will be looking for volunteers who will be willing to either assist or take over this duty. If interested please e-mail me at [email protected] if you would like to be a part of this long tradition.

TASTY TAPAS TURNS TO THE ANGLE LAKE OLYMPIAD

It’s time to take a break from our annual Tasty Tapas for a year to let those vibes simmer and rest and to bring out more flavor. It will return in 2021 zestier than ever. We’re introducing a new/old event on the lake this year. It’s time for a lake-wide summer potluck picnic where all members and guests are invited. And this event comes

with a sporting flavor. Besides shared food and camaraderie the main event will be the ANGLE LAKE OLYMPIAD! Up to 12 teams of three contestants made up of members and guests will compete in a series of wacky games to see which can keep their cool and accumulate points to determine who will be crowned lakeside champions! All are invited to come enjoy the party, gab with your neighbors and root on your favorite team. It’s a potluck meal so bring some food to share and we’ll all eat well and enjoy a cash bar with

libations for all ages to wet our whistles, so bring a few bucks along. Competing, rooting, eating and drinking could make for a very fine way to enjoy a summer day!! The date of our event is August 15th so put that on your calendar now. Full event details will be announced in our Summer Newsletter.

Well that’s it for now. May the sunshine on you and your families, and may we all look forward to a wonderful year on the lake.

Your President

HIGHLIGHTS OF A WONDERFUL ALSC CHRISTMAS PARTY!! A festive gathering of close to 80 members and guests was enthusiastically enjoyed by all. As always everyone was happy to visit with old friends and new neighbors at the

beginning of the Christmas season. The party took place at the elegant and spacious home of Roger and Lisa May, who have hosted many Shore Club activities during the past 20-plus years.

Our annual meeting followed a lively cocktail hour, which was presided over by our genial bartenders, Sandy and Bruce Goulet at the large and elegant bar in the May residence. Once again, we were all delighted with several original Goulet libations! We all swooned over the seafood hors d’oeuvres of scallops, prawns and a generous platter of rich

and buttery salmon lox—not to mention the wonderful and tempting variety on the large sushi platter.

The Lake season was colorfully summarized by our long-time and much appreciated ALSC President Lonnie Goulet, who also introduced new members. Included in the meeting was Marge Murtha’s annual audit report and a surprise announcement that the long-awaited 2020 ALSC Membership Directory had finally been updated, finalized and published. Chairperson Nancy Erickson wishes to thank the dedication of so many volunteers who spent countless hours undertaking the many tasks required to update the directory: Judy, Kari, Marge, Karen and many others. The highlight of our meeting is always the crowning of Mr. and Ms. Christmas for their dedication

over many years to the Shore Club and larger community—Judy Williams and Jim Todd took well-deserved honors!

Holding our business meeting to a strict schedule, well-timed and mouthwatering aromas wafted in from the kitchen, with our delicious catered dinner buffet highlighted by two enormous large and fresh salmon roasted to perfection. A sweet conclusion to our luscious meal was several desserts hand-selected by Marge and Nancy, who were also joined by Patti Austin, whose help and input was greatly appreciated. Many thanks to our volunteers who graciously made this event possible, and heartfelt thanks to the May family for generously hosting once again the Christmas Party. And finally, THANKS to ALL who joined in the Christmas fun; it wouldn’t be a party without you! We’re already looking forward to ALSC Christmas Party next December 5, 2020! A Very Happy New Year to All!

FREEZIN’ FOR A REASON AT THE POLAR PLUNGE & BEACH

Brunch

Who gets up New Year’s Day, bundles up and goes to the beach for an outdoor brunch? 70 really fun Angle Lake Neighbors, that’s who! And did they ever have fun this year! It was a balmy 50-degree day with no rain. 16 awesome people dressed up

in costumes creating a carnival atmosphere.

The ever-creative Sherry Yap won best costume prize as a cheery Angle Lake Chick. She received the gorgeous floral arrangement donated by our neighbor, Laura Rankin,

whose business Blessings Bouquet is a great local resource for all occasions. Notable runner ups for best costume were Julia Patterson in a hilarious rooster head and Nancy Erickson as a fish. 12 brave souls took the plunge in 43-degree lake water and attempted the swim to the dock. They were definitely freezin’ and it was for a great reason.

We collected donations to help replenish the Highline Food Bank after the holiday demand. This year our neighbors donated 186 pounds of food and $137 in cash. Their generosity and good spirits were well rewarded with nearly twice as many valuable prizes as last year. Local businesses donated $1,500 in goods and services, which 18 people were lucky enough to win. Raffle tickets were given for wearing costumes, plunging in the lake, volunteering to help with the event and for bringing food or cash donations.

Thanks to Deb Anderson, Fran Reid and Jayne Wissel who helped solicit raffle prize donations from local businesses. We encourage anyone who has a local business or contact to ask them for donations for next year’s plunge. Many people volunteered their time, which made this the smoothest running plunge to date for which the queen polar bear organizer was truly grateful. WHAT’S YOUR POST NUMBER?

An introduction among new lake acquaintances usually starts with an exchange of names, frequently followed with the question, “What’s your post number?” For someone new to this area, the first-time response might be, “What post are you referring to?”

The referred to posts are the wooden fire posts located at the end of each of the long lakeside driveways starting with #1 at South 198th Street and 32nd Ave. S. in the Southwest Corner of Angle Lake and running counter clockwise around the lake to South 192nd Street and 39th Ave. S. ending with the #78 at the northeast entrance of the Angle Lake Manor. Overtime, as you become more familiar with who lives at which post number, you might begin to

wonder—like we have—about where these posts came from. After much searching, we were able to finally track down the source and share the story of the fire posts.

We successfully located Retired Fire Chief, Jim Adsley, who was in charge of the SeaTac Community Fire Stations from 1970 to 1992. During his tenure, Adsley achieved a class three state insurance rating in 1988, which was higher than any of the surrounding cities at that time and equaled by only five other fire districts out of 412 statewide. Most of the measures he implemented were designed to allow the department to consistently provide the second fastest EMS response times in King County. The post project was just one example of many innovations employed to achieve these outstanding results.

Chief Adsley explained, “We were one of the most urban fire districts in the state with a fairly intense business district and some unique problems including high rise structures. I spent a lot of time during my 20 years of leadership developing creative ways to serve those special needs with limited resources.”

Recently Retired Deputy Fire Chief, Brian Wiwel originally cut teeth with the Angle Lake Station, his career continued to grow in step with the department transformations through city incorporation, into the Kent Fire Authority merger and finally through to his recent retirement with the Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority. Wiwel recalled the time in the late 70s, “Due to the long narrow lots on the lake from up at the cross street, a firefighter would be faced with several choices on which driveway would lead to the house with the emergency. Picking the wrong driveway would lead to the wrong house and it was very difficult to back out or turn around. The large collections of mailboxes at the top of the driveways were not of much help. The boxes were typically not well marked, and they could be between driveways, only narrowing the choices down to fifty-fifty and reading them was time consuming. Even if there was a visible fire, it was not clear which driveway to use, and there was no visible clue on the EMS dispatch call.” Wiwel continued, “Other information that was lacking included was the driveway even big enough for fire apparatus, and where on the driveway was the house? Each driveway

Page 7: POLAR PLUNGE EVENTS ALSCCALENDAR BOARD TEAM PAGE 4 …anglelakesc.com/blogdocs/2020Spring.pdf · to mention the wonderful and tempting variety on the large sushi platter. The Lake

typically served multiple properties and the crews had to stop at each house and try to read an address—if one was even posted—prior to moving further, which was due to the above stated issue of turning around or backing up. For fires, the location of the house posed a problem for water supply, how much hose would be needed to reach the house?”

With those problems in mind, Chief Adsley called for an investigation in the early 80s and he came up with the idea of creating numbered posts, sighting them and cataloging all properties located along those numbered drives and entering the pertinent data into the department minicomputer.

Looking back to the time as a young firefighter, Wiwel recalls the original posts being white 4” x 4” post about three feet high with blue numbers and the letter ‘H’ if there was a hydrant on that driveway. “I got a lot of blue paint on my fingers back then!”, Wiwel added. Later the posts were upgraded to taller posts and the numbers placed on reflective signage to improve visibility.

In addition to the posts, a map was created showing the driveways and posts. Individual maps were

created for each driveway showing the houses, approximate dimension, length of driveway for hose lays, the location of hydrants on the driveway, cross streets, and adjacent driveways. If access was restricted, the closest alternative was shown. For those with restricted access, letters were sent to the residents, advising them to improve their access for fire apparatus, usually by trimming back the brush and trees.

NEW AIRLINE MAKES BIG SPLASH ANNOUNCEMENT Airline, Sloof-Lirpa, recently announced it is launching a new commuter service connection in SeaTac, Washington. The service is targeted at delivering prompt shore to shore service for local airport commuters while not contributing to the current overcrowding at

nearby Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

This past fall, Sloof-Lirpa Airlines placed an order for eight new next-generation Blanton Javelin V6 STOL floatplanes. These aircraft have the ability of operating in extreme confined spaces. The STOL model aircraft is capable of achieving take off to 50 ft within a mere 150 ft (46 m) and landings from 50 ft requiring just 300 ft (91 m). The six-seat aircraft will operate select flights from state-of-the-art water runways on Angle Lake in SeaTac connecting with additional floating runways on Lake Washington located at Bellevue, Kirkland and Kenmore as well as on Puget Sound at sites in Everett and Tacoma. Sloof-Lirpa Airline Chief Marketing Officer, Clifford Hanger stated their new service steps to curb rising airport traffic congestion and high airport taxes by pioneering flights from new privately owned and operated “secondary airports.” Hanger goes on to say, "Our goal is to create a superior local service option for people seeking to avoid the stress of roadway travel getting to and from Sea-Tac International Airport. Operating our local air travel solution from these new water runways will not

contribute to the already high runway demand and overcrowded pinch all airlines are experiencing at Sea-Tac today, creating considerable arrival and departure delays and causing frequently missed connections for travelers.” The STOL -Seaplane in aviation terms is classified as a flying boat due to its modified fuselage, which is the main source of buoyancy and acts like a ship's hull in the water. “All these vessels have been designed to ensure smooth landings and are equipped with the latest technology to ensure passenger comfort and safety,” Hanger claims. Before coming aboard, Sloof-Lirpa captains and flight crew will undergo rigorous training on sea and water landings, judging drift from sea current, swell size and nautical navigation. Passengers will embark and disembark from exclusive Sloof-Lirpa piers and will be ferried to the planes by designated water shuttles.

Hanger states, "I’m proud to be part of this new service announcement in the Seattle Market. While the airline is

aware of some limited concern expressed by local lakeside residents, Sloof-Lirpa executives are certain once service is launched and in regular operation that things will go swimmingly." The first landing for Angle Lake is scheduled for July 4th of this year.

Established in 1934, the Angle Lake Shore Club (ALSC) board takes enormous pride in being recognized as a very active and successful neighborhood social organization. The club was founded when a group of like-minded individuals came together with similar goals toward preserving the environment and improving livability on the lake. Throughout the many decades, the club has flexed and adapted to meet the changing interests and needs of the membership including organizing a movement for the installation of sewer lines and encouraging residents to replace their reliance on septic tanks. The club has also focused on building community by forming yearly events such as the fishing derby, Fourth of July activities including the totem triathlon and fireworks display, and the Christmas party featuring progressive hors d’oeuvres and dinner. The organization even built and maintained a club house for many years until interest waned and it was sold.

86 years and going, the club objectives are still the same – continue caring for our environment and sustain a desirable level of enjoyment and quality of life which includes happiness and healthfulness. With these goals in mind, the ALSC board announces with enthusiasm the following events and dates for 2020.

WELCOMING COMMITTEE

The Sunday we chose was probably one of the coldest and windiest ever, but we had it all scheduled, challenged the weather and did great. Debbie Beck as our driver, Sandy Goulet as our navigator and me, Marge Murtha, as presenter went out to greet eight new neighbors.

What fun it was! We went down a few driveways none of us had ever been down before, but we found everyone. We welcomed new residents from 198th, three along Military Road and others in the Manor club area—all were very gracious.

The most popular questions were about the Fourth of July. They are so excited to be inviting extended family and guests for our beautiful festivities and events, ending with our grand Fourth of July show.

All were given the free Hi-Line Bowling certificates from Pat and Val Johns, a host of welcoming information and of course, a sign-up form to join the club.

Thanks to Tani Rae and others that submitted names of new residents, we depend on you and appreciate it very much. Let’s do it again!
