    How to start m easuring your he art rate (BasicUse)1. Place the t ransmit ter around your chest and wet t he elect rodes . Place the

    w rist receiver on your w rist .

    2. Press and hold the OK but ton to s tar t the measurement . The s topwatch and

    the exercise recording start . Your heart rate will appear in about

    15 seconds.

    How to stop measuring your heart rate1. Press the stop but ton. The s topwat ch and other calculat ions stop. Heart rate

    measurement continues but exercise da ta is not recorded into a file anymo re.

    The Po lar S710 offe rs you various po ssibilities on custom ising exercise sessions

    to f i t your personal needs.

    For example, use the Interval Trainer funct ion to g uide you thro ugh a complete

    interval training session. Or, you can choose the functions that suit you best:

    e.g. timers, recovery calculation and cycling information. After training, you

    can review your exercise f i le and transfer i t to your computer for a nalysis wi th

    Polar Precision Performa nce softw are . Monitor your f i tness level , and a ny

    long-term chang es in it, by perform ing the q uick and easy Polar Fitness Test .

    Useful tips

    Buttons and their functions

    Brie fly pressing a button (approximately 1 second) wi l l do di fferent

    things than pressing and ho lding the button for a long er period oftime (approximately 2 to 5 seconds). If your press the button for a

    longer period of time, you can use shortcuts.

    prevent them from being pressed accidentally.

    You can always re turn to the Time of day display from the Options

    setting or File recalling loops by pressing a nd holding t he stop but ton.

    How to prepare the w rist receiver

    1. Since the display is blank whe n the receiver leaves the

    fa ctory, you have to a ctivat e the w rist receiver by pressing

    the OK button t w ice, aft er which the Time of da y display

    appea rs. This is a on e-off procedure; once you ha ve turned

    on your receiver you can not t urn it off an ymore.

    2. You may start measuring your heart rate right aw ay

    using the de fault settings. However, the following

    sett ings are ones that i t would be useful to change a s

    soon a s possible: Time of day (see section Setting the

    w atch) and personal user settings (see section User

    information settings).

    3. Polar S710 has various functions that you can use

    according to your persona l training needs. For more

    informa tion, see section Mode s and th eir functions. You

    can either manua lly enter the settings by pressing th e

    receiver butto ns or you can def ine your settings Polar

    Precision Performance softw are , after which the da ta

    should be transferred from your computer to th e wrist

    receiver.

    4. Wear the wrist receiver as you would wear a n ordinary

    wa tch. If you go biking , we recommend at t aching the

    w rist receiver to a Pola r Bike Mount .

    Easy start Installing the Polar Bike Mount

    Use cable ties to secure the bike mount

    snugly on the rubber pa d.

    Attach the receiver by securing the

    wrist strap .

    Installing the Polar Speed Sensor

    The Po lar Speed Sensor me asures speed

    and distance w hen cycling .

    1 . Che ck the f ro n t s ide o f the f ro n t

    fork to f ind a suitab le place for the

    speed sensor. The sensor should b e

    at ta ched 20-50 cm/8" -18" fro m

    the mo unted w rist receiver.

    2 . C le an and d ry the a re a u nde rne a th

    the rubber pad before you at tach

    i t to the front f ork.

    3. Adjust the ang le of the sensor at 45 -

    90 degrees as show n in the

    illustrations.

    4. Pass the cable t ies through the

    sensor holes and loosely adjust the

    ties. Do not tighten f ully yet.

    If the cable ties are too short fo r

    your bicycle, put tw o of t hem

    toget her to make them longer.

    How to put the transmitter on

    1 . At t ach the t ransmi t te r to the e l as t ic s t rap .

    2. Adjust the strap length to f i t snugly and

    comfortab ly. Secure the strap around your

    chest, just below the chest muscles, and

    buckle it.

    3 . Li f t the t ransmi t te r o f f yo u r che st and

    moisten the grooved electrode areas

    on the ba ck.

    4 . Check tha t the we t e l ec t ro de a re as a re f i rmly

    ag ainst your skin and the Polar logo is in a

    central, upright position.

    How to start measuring your heart rate

    1 . Be g in wi th the d i sp lay tha t sho ws

    the t ime of da y.

    2. Keep the wrist receiver wi thin

    1 metre/3 feet of your transmitter.

    3 . Check tha t yo u a re no t ne ar o the r p e o p le

    that ha ve heart rate monitors, high voltag e

    pow er lines, televisions, mob ile phones or

    other sources of e lectromag netic disturbance.

    5 . The re a re two sp o k e mag ne t o p t io ns.

    You only need to instal l one of them.

    One is installed by rotating it a round th e

    spoke before putting the metal cover on,

    anot her by t ight ening the screw. The

    magnet must be facing the speed sensor.

    6. Fine-tune the posit ioning of both the

    magnet a nd the sensor so that the mag net

    passes the sensor closely but doe s not

    touch it. The maximum distance bet we en

    the speed sensor and the spoke magnet

    should be 5 mm/0,2" . Once positioned

    correctly, tighten t he cab le ties securely

    and cut off a ny excess cable tie end s.

    Your saf ety is importa nt t o us. While riding

    your bike, please keep your eyes on the

    road to prevent possible accidents and

    injury. Check that you can turn the handle

    bar no rmally and cable wires for brakes or

    gearing do not catch on the sensor. Check

    also that the sensor does not disturb

    pedal l ing or the use of brakes or gearing .

    Modes and their functions4. Press the OK button to sta rt measuring your heart rate . A heart symbolwil l start f lashing and your hea rt rate (beats per minute) wi l l appear in

    a maximum of 15 seconds.

    5. Press OK aga in. The stopwa tch starts running and you can start

    exercising. The exercise da ta w ill only be sto red in a file if you ha ve

    tu rned the s to pwa tch o n .

    How to stop measuring your heart rate

    1. Press the stop butto n. The stopwa tch and other calculat ions stop.

    The hea rt rate measuring continues, al though exercise data is no longer

    recorded.

    2. Press the stop button a gain. The heart rate measuring stops.

    The receiver show s the Time of da y display ag ain.

    After exercising

    1. Careful ly wash the transmitter wi th a mild soap and wa ter solut ion.

    2 . Rinse i t w i th p u re wa te r.

    3 . Dry the t ransmi t te r ca re fu ll y wi th a so f t t o w e l.

    4. Store the transmitter in a clean and dry place. Dirt impairs the elasticity

    and functioning of the transmitter. Sweat and moisture can keep the

    electrodes wet and t he transmitter activated, w hich shortens batt ery life.

    Your Po lar S710 has six ma in mod es: Time of da y, Exercise, File, Option s,

    Fitness test and Connection.

    1. TIME OF DAY

    You can use your Polar heart ra te monitor as an ordinary wa tch with

    dat e , weekday indicator an d alarm function.

    You can also change betw een tw o di fferent countries t ime

    zones. In add i t ion, the fol low ing functions can be upload ed from a

    computer:

    2. EXERCISE

    In the Exercise mode, you measure your heart rate and exercise

    information is recorded in the File mode. You can preset up to five

    exercise sets for your persona l needs. When you sta rt exercising, just

    select one of the saved sets. Or, you can select BasicUse (hea rt rat emeasurement w i thout hea rt rat e l imits, t imers or other exercise guiding

    functions).

    display to show information on t he fol lowing:

    your current heart rate/average heart rate/a read ing of your

    maximum heart rate in percentages

    Precision Performance software and upload them to

    your receiver from your computer. After preparing

    your settings you can upload options lock function.

    METHOD 2.

    Mark the tread of the front t ire with a line and roll the tire

    perpendicular to th e ground. You can a lso use the valve as

    a ma rk. Mark a line on the ground . Move your bike on a

    flat surface straight a head fo r one complete wh eel rota tion.

    Check that the tire is perpendicular to the g round. Draw

    anot her line on the g round exactly wh ere the mark on thefront tire touches the ground.

    Measure the distance between t he tw o lines on the ground.

    Substract 4 mm to account for your w eight on t he bike to

    get your w heel circumference.

    This is the value you must set on the m eter.

    You can use two modes in your

    exercise: Measure or Exercise mode.

    In the Measure mode you can see your

    heart rate but your exercise is not

    recorded. In the Exercise mode your

    exercise is recorded and stopwatch

    and other calculations are started.

    Measure mode

    1. Wear the t ransmitter and the w rist receiver as described in Easy startsection.

    2. To make sure that t he code search will be successful:

    Keep the w rist receiver wi thin 1 metre/3 feet of your transmitter.

    Check tha t yo u a re no t ne ar to o the r pe o p le wi th he ar t ra te mo nito rs,

    Swap time 1 or time 2

    Turning the heart rate zone alarm o n/off

    When appears on the display the zone alarm is on. You wil l hear

    a beeping sound with ea ch heartbeat i f your heartbea t is outside the heart

    rate limit.

    If you do not wa nt to use the zone alarm the f lashing heart ra te reading

    indicates if your heart bea t is outside the hea rt rat e limit. This function can

    be used i f you have set hea rt rate l imits on.

    order to hea r the act ivity sounds when the pha se starts and stops makesure the a ct ivi ty sound is on. If you have turned the countdow n t imer of

    the phase off , you have to stop the pha se manual ly by pressing t he OK

    button. When the stopw atch starts running indicates that Interval

    Trainer is on. As the interval t raining exercise ends t he Po lar S710

    aut oma tically sta rts a BasicUse exercise, which is recorded t o the sam e file

    as your interva l training exercise.

    Structure of an interval training exercise:

    Stopping the exercise

    Starting recovery calculation

    To start the recovery calculation, press and hold t he OK butto n.

    See Exercising with Interval Trainer / Recovery calculation for the

    displayed information during the recovery calculation. After the recovery

    calculation is done the e xercise is paused.

    You can continue the exercise by pressing the OK button after the recovery

    calculation. If you do another recovery calculation, the recovery

    information w ill be dele ted in consequence.

    1. Press the stop butto n to pause the exercise .

    2. Press and ho ld the stop butt on unti l Time of da y is displayed.

    Your lap and spli t t ime are aut omat ical ly recorded, when you end t he

    2. Press and hold the stop but ton to re turn to the Time of day display .

    Press the stop button. BasicUse appears. You can continue measuring your

    heart rate in this mode (Measure mode) or continue exercising with

    BasicUse and recording your exercise information.

    3. Press OK to start recording the BasicUse exercise . Stopw atch is started

    and you can continue using the hea rt rate l imits of the interval exercise .

    Exercising with BasicSet (Int OFF, E1-E5)

    In this mod e you can also use the fun ctions in Exercise recording mod e

    section.

    Starting the timers

    If t imers are set on, they a utoma tically start running once you start the

    stopw at ch. Timers alterna te in th e follow ing ord er: timer 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3 etc.

    At the end of t imer 1 you wil l hear 1 beep, at the end of t imer 2 you w ill

    hea r 2 beeps an d at the end of t imer 3 you w ill hea r 3 beeps. Timers stop

    running when you stop the stopwa tch.

    Resetting the trip distance

    Start from the Measure mode. Or, pause the exercise by pressing the stop

    butt on. Then scroll up unt il Trip is displayed. Press and hold t he signa l light

    butt on unt il the trip reading is zero. Release. To cont inue your exercise

    press OK.

    Returning to the m anually set altitude

    Start from the Mea sure mode. Scrol l down unti l a l t i tude is displayed in t he

    middle row . Press and hold th e signal/light but ton un til the previous

    manually set altitude is displayed.

    If the manua l ly se t a l t i tude reference value deviates o ver 610 m/2000 ft

    from t he a l t itude calculated by Polar S710, Fai led appears and the

    measured al t i tude appears. Set the reference al t i tude from the Options

    mode. As you start adjust ing the reference al t i tude, the receiver suggests a

    measured al t i tude fo r you instead o f th e previously set al t i tude.

    Restarting the interval or recovery calculation

    Pause the interval or recovery calculation.

    Start reset t ing by pressing and holding the do wn button. To restart t he

    same calculat ion press the OK button or to reset the interval training

    exercise , see Resett ing stopw atch t o zero sect ion.

    Interrupting an interval or recovery calculation

    Press and hold the OK button during your interval training exercise

    session to interrupt t he calculation. The follow ing section auto mat ically

    starts. E.g. if you interrupt an interval your recovery calculation (if set on)

    automa tically starts.

    Interrupting a phase o f an interval training exercise

    Press the stop butto n to pause your phase . Press and ho ld the OK button.

    Heart touch function

    The hea rt to uch function is act ivated a s you bring the wrist receiver near

    to a file as you start the stopwatch in the Exercise

    mode. You can recall the information in the File

    mode. In the File mode there are up to 99 exercise

    files and a records file, which keeps track of the

    cumulative and maximum exercise values.
