TEN-T Network - a new infrastructure transport policy

Comprehensive network – to be completed by 2050 Reflect currently existing and

planned TEN-T network Updated and adjusted to reflect EU

policy objectives Providing multimodal, efficient

access to all EU Regions with common technical standards

Core network – to be completed by 2030 Reflect strategically most important

part of the TEN-T network Reflect rail freight corridors (in the

form of multimodal corridors) Include High-speed rail Strong focus on multimodal core

network corridors Connecting 85 important economic

centers and airports, 138 sea and inland ports, 28 cross-border points

National Networks become a European network

Key Fields of Activity: Capacity & Maintenance

•Investments necessary (e.g. Signalling)•More noise and vibrations•Level crossings (longer closing times) Capacity Increase for the existing network

•Third or fourth track•New lines•City and hub bypasses•Huge investments necessary•Planning and Approval Process long-lastingCapacity Increase with an

extended network

•Maintenance becomes more challenging (Time slots High Speed Tamping and Grinding)

•Maintenance under slab track•Adapt maintenance to future technologies•Adapt maintenance to climate change New

maintenance concepts

Challenge: Ageing Infrastructure Rails 10 – 15 years

Fastenings 10 – 30 years

Wooden Sleepers 20 – 30 years; Concrete Sleepers 30 – 40 years

Ballast Formation 20 – 30 years

Earthworks > 40 years

Slab track 50- 60 years

Bridges 75 years (Experience: steel up to 80-100 years, masonry up to 120 years, massive stone elements up to 150 years)

A need for maintenance!

Climate Adaptation A marked difference in climate north/

south is likely Cold winters will become increasingly

rare More hot summers Track buckle risks increase Adaptation of Track Maintenance and

Maintenance Strategies/ Concepts/ Schedules Tamping ballast formation Cutting rails in summer Welding rails in summer A need for new

concepts!
