Tips for Getting the Most From Your Job Fair Experience Today

A job fair is a networking event filled with hundreds of people with information about jobs. You’re here to network with both job seekers as well as employers to move your job search forward by making connections and gathering information. Talk to every employer if you have time. You’ve probably prepared for employers you’re targeting, which is a great strategy. But talk to every employer in the room if you can. Give all of them the opportunity to learn about your skills and talents. Get in the right frame of mind. If you ask recruiters about the importance of attitude in a job search on a scale of 1 to 10, most of them answer 11. We all get nervous, but focus on being upbeat and friendly when talking to recruiters and other job seekers. The Job Seeker Handbook may not include all of a company’s job openings. Hiring needs change dynamically so use the Handbook as a guide to help you prepare, not as something written in stone. Attend the resume reviews or career seminars being offered. It’s an opportunity to learn and to interact and network with additional job seekers. Be prepared. Review the employer’s page in the Job Seeker Handbook and then introduce yourself to the recruiter or hiring manager with your brief elevator speech highlighting who you are and your specific talents. All recruiters are different so you will see a variety of responses to your elevator speech and your approach depending on the recruiter and their hiring needs. Be professional at all times. Not every company will be a fit. If a recruiter isn’t interested don’t take it personally. Arguing with a recruiter or hiring manager or being rude is not going to get you hired. When appropriate, ask for feedback. Many recruiters really do want to help job seekers improve their skills and get hired. You need to be mindful of the recruiter’s time, but if they are offering advice to you, pay attention and then thank them for doing so. If you have a big purse or briefcase or are carrying too many items, take them back to your car. One organized folder or portfolio will help you appear as a polished organized professional. Close the deal. Be sure to get the recruiter’s name and contact information so you may follow up. Even if today’s discussion was not a fit, remember the value of networking.

The Central Security Service was established in 1972 to promote a full partnership between NSA and the cryptologic elements of the armed forces. NSA/CSS is unique among the U.S. defense agencies be-cause of our government-wide responsibilities. NSA/CSS pro-vides products and services to the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, government agencies, industry partners, and select allies and coalition partners. In addition, we deliver critical strategic and tactical information to war planners and war fighters. By its very nature, what NSA/CSS does as a key member of the Intelligence Community requires a high degree of confi-dentiality. Our Information Assurance mission confronts the formidable challenge of preventing foreign adversaries from gaining access to sensitive or classified national security infor-mation. Our Signals Intelligence mission collects, processes, and disseminates intelligence information from foreign signals for intelligence and counterintelligence purposes and to sup-port military operations. This Agency also enables Network Warfare operations to defeat terrorists and their organizations at home and abroad, consistent with U.S. laws and the protec-tion of privacy and civil liberties.
