Port Stockton Sayings-Bulletin
The monthly bulletin of Port Stockton Branch 46 of Sons In Retirement,
a California non-profit corporation chartered July 23, 1974.
NEXT MEETING: JULY 16, THURSDAY at 12 Noon
BIG SIR Ramblings for July
The big holiday this month is the 4th of July. When I was growing up in Stockton, we lived about 3 blocks from the American Legion Park. Every year they would have a fireworks display on the 4th and my folks could sit out on the front lawn and watch. Of course, that wasn’t for me. My buddies and I would go over to the park or “lake” as we called it and check the action.
Our annual luncheon picnic at Micke Grove was very successful. Fifty-three Sirs and their wives or significant others attended – two more than last year. You can read all about it in this issue of the bulletin and also check out the accompanying photos. Go to the branch website for a complete set of photos. Romeo outings will continue in August. Check out the date plus photos from Romeo 4 in this edition.
Our branch is still short one officer for the 2016 slate – that of Secretary. The duties, benefits, and even the requirements are listed in this edition. So please read the ad, and if you think you can meet the requirements, please contact Ron Korock. I doubt that the requirements will discourage anyone.
Our branch is embarking on a program to honor any of our veterans who
have been in combat in WWII, Korea, or South East Asia (e.g. Vietnam). Read the article titled “Sir Heroes” in this edition.
And, please, if you are a combat veteran, contact Paul Wagner.
Jack Lamberty, Big Sir

IN MEMORY We are saddened by the passing of ex-Branch 46 member Sam Cardinale. Sam was a longtime member of our branch and also our Bowling Chairman for many years. Most of us can remember Sam for his monthly reports at our Luncheons: “Come on down to Pacific Bowl”. Last year, for convenience, Sam transferred to Branch 87 in Stockton. Our sympathy goes out to Sam’s family and friends at this sad time in their lives.
Bring a Friend, Win a Prize When you bring a friend (prospective new member) to a Branch 46 lunch meeting, you will receive FREE five 50-50 tickets. Good luck! ALSO, if your friend happens to join, then you will receive a free lunch.
SWITCHING TO E-MAIL Sending out bulletins via Snail-mail

State SIR Happenings The latest edition of SIR Happenings has been posted on the State SIR website. Go to http://sirinc.org/sirhappenings. This brings up a web page where you can access either the current (Spring) edition of SIR Happenings or previous issues. The latest issue has a front page article on President Bob Hairston’s experiences visiting various branches and how they are using his “Plus One” recruitment theme. The edition also contains a series of interesting articles ranging from golf to fishing to pool. There are also some excellent photos provided by the Branch 101 and 121 Hiking Group. In fact, all of the photography in the edition is excellent.
JULY LUNCHEON SPEAKERS
The July speaker(s) will be Sandy Stoddard and Becky Freeman from the Hospice of San Joaquin. They will speak about the Hospice and the variety of services they offer or can facilitate. While many of the SIR members are familiar with the Hospice, these speakers will offer added insight. Sandy is from Lodi and went to schools there. She graduated from Fresno State and worked for the American Cancer Society for 28 years. After retiring from there she began her career with the Hospice of San Joaquin; she has been there for the past two years. Becky Freeman is also from the area and has been a volunteer coordinator for the Hospice for more than six years. It is her job to provide personnel for the many services available through the Hospice. We look forward to an informative and valuable presentation.
SIR Heroes
Service to one’s country during a time of need is
the greatest gift that can be given. We have many
among us in SIR who has served the USA on
battlefields in Europe and Asia as well as islands
in between. This effort may have been during
WWll, in Korea or in Southeast Asia but it is an
endeavor that should not be forgotten. Many
times these folks are too modest to be identified but they should
not be. Please, if you are one of these individuals or know of
someone within our organization who saw combat during these
critical times; contact Little Sir, Paul Wagner at either 510-910-
3755 or 209-931-9001. If you wish to E-mail, send your message
JUNE PICNIC REPORT
As usual, our June Picnic at Micke Grove was a great success, due mainly to the pre-picnic efforts of Little Sir Paul Wagner who purchased and hauled a ton of stuff to the site. Paul brought tubs and chests of ice cream, sodas, and bottled water plus all the necessary dry ice and regular ice for cooling. Paul also bought the table covers, and he and Alice Lamberty spent nearly an hour covering the tables. Our thanks to John and Drina Moskito for once again bringing a huge box of cherries and also squash this time to share with everyone. And thanks also to Frank Martinez for bringing a box of plums for all. Gary Calhoon ran the golf chipping contest, and the winners were Frank Martinez (1st place) and Christopher Blim (2nd ). Christopher is a new member in Branch 46. Reno Berbano was the Bingo caller with his assistant Joyce Korock. But your inept Bulletin Editor forgot to get the names of the Bingo winners as well as the winners of the 50/50. This is a good thing since we won’t have any names for the IRS. Our Asst Treasurer, Bob Stewart, brought his check book and spent most of his time counting money, paying the caterers and the park in addition to selling tickets for the 50/50. Attendance was 53, two more than last year. The Lodi high temperature was reported as 91 degrees, but there was a nice Delta breeze at the Mokelumne Shelter which made things comfortable for all. The Mexican American Lions Club of Lodi catered the luncheon with a serving of tri-tips, pinto beans, garlic bread, and mixed salad. And finally, we were honored to have three widows of previous branch 46 Sirs attend the picnic: Patti Roek (Jerry), Ruth Strombom (Verner), and Flo Sanguinetti (Ray). According to these gals: “We came to play!”
