INTRODUCTION

Politeknik Mukah (PMU) is located at the central region of Sarawak within Mukah Divi-

sion. PMU is the twentieth polytechnic in Malaysia. PMU campus was built on a hun-

dred acre site and is fully equipped with modern infrastructure and education facilities.

PMU started its operation in 2004 at Sekolah Menengah Teknik Sibu. Its first student

intake began in July 2005. During the early age of its establishment, three courses

were offered; Certificate in Information Technology, Certificate in Civil Engineering and

Certificate in Business Studies. Diploma level Programmes were introduced a year

later after the establishment of seven departments.

The major academic departments are:

Information and Communication Technology Department (JTMK)

Civil Engineering Department (JKA)

Electrical Engineering Department (JKE)

Mechanical Engineering Department (JKM)

Commerce Department (JP)

Two supporting departments are;

General Studies Department (JPA)

Mathematics, Science and Computer Department (JMSK)

In order to promote lifelong learning, a number of short courses are offered to public

and local communities under Time Sector Privatization (TSP) besides full-time cours-

es. This is significant with the existence of PMU as one of the higher learning institu-

tions providing knowledge, skills and competencies

OBE

INTRODUCTION

A model of education where by students demonstrate what they know and are able

to do whatever the required outcomes are. The outcomes are specified in terms of

individual student learning.

OBE focuses on desired results.

OBE emphasizes setting clear standards for observable, measurable outcomes

through which students performances can be measured.

An approach that focuses on students’ learning rather than teaching.

OBE is concerned with how students demonstrate their learning (called outcomes).

COMPONENTS IN OBE?

PRINCIPLES OF OBE

OBE CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT

INSTRUCTIONAL

CLARITY OF FOCUS

Focus on what learners are able to

do successfully.

DESIGNING DOWN

Begin curriculum design with a clear

definition of the significant learning that

learners are to achieve by the end of

their formal education.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS

Establish high, challenging perfor-

mance standards.

EXPANDED OPPORTUNITIES

Do not learn same thing in same way in

same time.

OBE

LEVEL OF OBE

OBE vs TRADITIONAL EDUCATION

Few years after graduation (3 – 5 years)

It focus on what graduates are expected to attain within a few

years after graduation. Program Aims / Program Educational

Objective are based on the needs of the program’s constituen-

cies. Upon graduation

Program Learning Outcomes are statement of what the learner

is expected to know, understand or be able to do on success-

ful completion of the entire program that is upon graduation.

Upon course completion

Course Learning Outcomes are assessed upon subject com-

pletion by instructors who evaluate students’ perfor-

mance on homework problems, programming and other

projects, essays, oral presentations, and quizzes, tests, or ex-

aminations. Upon topic completion

Topic Learning Outcomes are statements of what learners

know and can do for that particular topic.

TEACHER CENTERED vs STUDENT CENTERED

EFFECTIVENESS OF OBE

Students are expected to be able to do more challenging task other than memorize

and reproduce what was taught.

Students able to write project proposals, complete projects, analyze case studies,

give case presentations, show their abilities to think, question, research and make decisions based on the finding.

Students could be creative, able to analyze and synthesize information.

Students able to plan and organize tasks, able to work in a team as a community or in entrepreneurial service teams to propose and market the problem solutions.

THE ROLES OF STUDENTS

Takes responsibility for learning.

Seeks knowledge actively.

Constructs knowledge by interacting with his/her lecturer and also information gathered from various sources to be used in problem solving.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS

The students must be responsible for their own learning process as much as the

lecturers are responsibles for their teaching.

In OBE, the emphasis is on students’ responsibility in their own learning by clearly

defining the Student Learning Time (SLT):face-to-face and non face-on-face.
