Representing an entire course can be challenging; you need to consider the content, as well as the people, and the name. I went with an abstract image that can be viewed in different ways: an eye, a pen, and a person.

When approaching the idea of illustrating a phrase I thought about the meaning behind it. While it is mostly thought of as someone’s intellect, a light bulb is a common symbol for ideas. Therefore, the image that comes from the saying becomes a search for a good idea amongst all the average or adequate ones.

To emphasize contrast, the simplest solution would be to have one piece full of colour, the other being in black and white. To forge a connection between the two I sectioned both parts with similar vertical lines.

Be careful using these types of ovens. They can be heated above 1200 degrees. Please read your users manuel before using one of these ovens. If any piece of equipment is missing, do not start the oven for it is possible for gas to escape.

Thank you for choosing us for your cooking needs. Have a good day :)

A game of “Spot the differences” can go in many directions. I worked with both subtlety and realism so that the viewer will engage with the piece as a whole instead of simply the objects within it.

Tennis is a game about movement, momentum and the push and pull between players. I used lines and black-white contrast to symbolize the players and the game. A flowing path is also created throughout all five pieces with a the swirling motion in the middle to represent the game going in any direction. All this is done using geometric shapes, and a simple tennis racquet.

Vincent Van Goh’s “Starry Night” is one of the most famous paintings ever made, but it is normally looked at as a whole. To heighten the experience of the feeling, I re-created four areas that each has its own look and feel. Using a window frame as a compositional devise, gives the feeling of looking through into it, instead of at it.

War is a sight that most do not like to face. When drawing a scene of soldiers running, I gave the sense of urgency, quick strokes taken in one area at a time. At the same time I faded the background into which they were running, to provoke the sense of uncertainty that no one knows which way war will go, for better or for worse.

(2012 Graphic)Creating a front and back cover for a guide book for graphic design creates a challenge. You need to assume that the reader does not know anything about the subject. Taking that into consideration, I took inspiration from Piet Mondrian’s “Composition of Red, Blue and Yellow”. The beginning to any design is the composition which is based on De Stijl. After that I decided three blocks representing 1, 2 and 3 would fit well in a “Step by Step” design.

Take a book title out of context and the emotion within it can then be pulled forth. With a title such as “The Sweet, Terrible, Glorious Year I Truly Completely Lost It” I felt that the emotion conveyed was one of insanity. Wanting to illustrate that emotion for the front book cover, the solution I used is to make the title itself into a knife.

After studying Fukuda Shigeo’s posters, I was drawn towards his optical illusions and impossible spaces. As homage to him I used his “F” as an impossible shape breaking around a simple picture frame.
