What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is a new, flexible way for users to consume
infrastructure. In this model, users access a shared pool of
configurable computing resources that are shared with others. The
user consumes these resources hourly, and pays only for what
they use. The provider manages the underlying servers, storage,
and other components, enabling the user to focus on higher-value
activities like building new applications or running existing apps.
This cloud model is composed of four essential characteristics,
• On-demand access, acquire resources in minutes
• Self-service, so creating and managing resources is automated
• Scalable, resources are elastic
• Metered billing, typically by the hour
Why use Cloud Computing?
The main benefit for IT departments: they can outsource the
management of infrastructure to someone else. This enables IT pros and
developers to focus on building and maintaining applications that deliver
a competitive advantage for the business. In addition, cloud services do
not requiring large upfront capital expenses (CapEx) — users simply
pay as they go, and pay only for what they use in a utility model.
