The Dr. P. Phillips Orlando Performing Arts Center is the centerpiece of a two block redevelopment of downtown Orlando. Designed as a comprehensive home to Orlando’s art organizations as well as traveling road shows to Orlando, the Center is intended to garner a new social and cultural spirit to this often forgotten city.
To serve its role as a cultural catalyst, the Center includes a major arts education component as well as residential, office and commercial space. The site is opposite city hall with another major goal to create a meaningful civic space that will become the symbolic center of the city.

The exterior envelope of the Performing Arts Center consists of three primary divisions; glass curtianwall, brick facade and a metal deck canopy roof. The glass curtain-wall and brick facade conceal the public and private areas of the Center, respectively. The visual and materialistic dichotomy of these two envelope systems strengthen the revealing nature and strict ‘trueness’ of this modernist center. All the while, the metal deck canopy roof acts as a solar shade and overall border to the building, framing the public lobby within the context of the urban fabric.

The lobby of the Performing Arts Center is the public gathering space and circulation space for theater patrons. It is four levels and is spatially divided into three sections, corresponding to each theater. The primary spatial and design element of the lobby is the ‘Wave Wall’, a three-dimensionally curved concrete wall that faces the theater drums while acting as acoustic seperator for each theater. This curving wall travels the length of the lobby and ultimately acts as the spatial and physical media-tor between public and private, patron and performer, lobby and stage.

This bench sought to challenge the dichotomic relationship between aggressive form and physical stability and investigate how pushing this normally stable balance can change perceptions about a common type of furniture. By using a monolithic material such as concrete, this exploration became a competitive conversation about the role of shape and structure in design. The shape was born out of an intuitive and ethereal process of fairing lines and vectors, forming the curves and edges that move, intersect and cross along the length of the bench. These curves, defining the outline of the shape, travel out and up at both ends to create two slivers of concrete. It is at these ends that the balance between shape and stability start to waiver.

The developed fragility created by the delicate and exagerated shape, spurned a ‘counter-process’ of material reinforcement. This material reinforcement included the addition of reinforcing bars and glass fibers to the concrete as well as a network of reinforcing frames and supports to the conrete formwork. This agitated relationship between shape and structure is ultimately realized and manifested in the skepticism and struggle of the user as they prepare sit on this object.
