there are many types of business in our areaThe reasons why people choose towork for themselves is almost asdiverse as the very many types ofbusiness in our area. Of course,some businesses have existed formany years, and we can findexamples of 2nd, 3rd and even 4thgeneration family members still atthe helm. Often, a businesspurchase or start-up stems from along-held ambition to work forpersonal gain, or to escape frommore regular and sometimes lessfulfilling employment. A commontheme for the past few years hasbeen as a result of redundancy,with few job replacementopportunities to be found inrecessionary times.

However, just occasionally, a trulyinspirational start-up is born out ofsheer human spirit that is determinedto overcome adversity. Sarah Nicholls isone such story.

Sarah, now 33 and a mother of two wasdiagnosed with fibromyalgia. This isdescribed as a life-long condition, withsymptoms of fatigue, widespreadmuscle pain and often, as in Sarah`scase, leading to lack of mobility. As aresult of this condition, Sarah lost herjob, as she was no longer physically ormentally capable of working.

Meeting Sarah today, it is hard torealise the fight that she put up to gether life back together. Bubbly andoutgoing, Sarah is full of praise andthanks to Dr Guy Busher and SarahMorris, whose diagnosis and supportgroup programme helped her to changeher lifestyle and stamina levels. Fullysupported by her family, Sarah got backto some sort of normality. The next stepwas to enlist the help of Malvern jobcentre, with the end result that Sarahhas now launched her own business-Pampered by Sarah. Trained by Astonand Fincher Beauty Academy, Sarahoperates a mobile service for LuxuryManicures and Spray Tan in the comfortof your own home. Linked to this, Sarahhas also introduced Princess and

Catwalk Parties for the 3-13 years oldladies in your life.

For example. It’s very possible that you haveyour partner’s number memorized. It`s alsovery possible that they are listed by nameon your phone and you haven’t the faintestidea what the number is. If you lost yourcell-phone and all of your contacts, it’s verypossible you’d have no idea how to get incontact with anyone, let alone someoneimportant to you. And you can’t even look itup since cell-phone numbers are unlisted.

Without your phone you would feel naked.Perhaps this is the crux of the issue.Technology addiction is a reality these days,with people checking their emails and textmessages as much as 30 to 40 times andhour, whether at work or play. Obviously,technology can be a good thing, but toomuch of it can leave your stressed andstrung-out.

As with a lot of things in life, it is all aboutbalance. We need to finds ways ofappreciating and using technology the rightway, but still knowing when to turn it off.

However, choosing this product can, more often than not, prove to bedifficult. There is so much variety it becomes a minefield for most. Ifyou have a plan before you start looking, this is best, but you canbecome unstuck if your ideas are too fixed. Be open- minded andadventurous. Mix patterns. This makes things more interesting andgives a lived- in feel rather than a staged look.

Think about the usage of the fabric. Is it a chair used a lot or awindow that has a lot of sunshine? Fabrics fade in sunshine no matterhow good the quality. All upholstery fabrics will wear with time andusage. If you are having new curtains, have a blind as well, as youcan then pull it to half- mast or fully down as the sun moves aroundyour house. Protect the item (say a sofa) in a bay window, as the backwill fade-use a throw. Linings are important. Try to buy a decent one-as a general rule if it’s less than £6 a metre it’s possibly not worthhaving. If you have an interlining as well, not only will it add warmthand body, but it will also protect your fabric from damp draughts orcondensation from windows.

There are a number of ways to search for and purchase fabric, butof course it’s always best to see it and touch it in person. You willget a better idea of depth of colour, scale of pattern and quality.

In my design studio at Sarah-Jane’s I have surrounded myself withthe largest collection of fabric sampling most people have ever seen!I have been collecting samples for fifteen years. Fabric is a veryimportant part of interior design and I just get so much inspiration formy work from the collection. Once you start your search youundoubtedly will feel the same.

I've always loved writing, and Iwas looking for ways to fill my gapyear exploring my interest inadvertising and journalism. So atthe end of the summer I got intouch with the Portico and asked ifI could work as an intern for themagazine. At a subsequentinterview I was taken on with thepromise that I would be given arounded work experience, not justa coffee-making, photocopying internship.

Interviewing local businesses and writing articles gave me insightinto the several different components of magazine production. Inow understand the realities of tight word counts and loomingprint deadlines and the buzz in the office when the newest editionhas been published!

I also learnt more about the way businesses run throughspeaking to a variety of Malvern locals, ranging from home-warestore and shoe shop owners to jewellers and hotel managers. Itwas great to listen to their advice and stories which I would neverhave heard otherwise.

It was this experience which helped me realise it was thepromotion aspect of writing which I was drawn to and PR was apath I wanted to explore. So I sent a couple of my Porticoarticles to several PR agencies in London and was lucky to beoffered a two month internship with Radiator PR in Holborn,where I write this now.

My advice to students who are curious in how the world ofjournalism or business operates is don't be afraid of knocking onlocal doors because there are some fantastic people andopportunities waiting for you, none more so than in the MalvernDistrict.

For the rest of my gap year I'll be volunteering in the South ofFrance before going to work at a special needs school in Morocco.It will certainly be a demanding and challenging experience, buthugely worthwhile. (I'll be living with a host family in Rabat, anancient city with an amazing blend of African, French, Spanishand Arabic cultures, so I'll have a chance to use my French andalso pick up some Arabic.)

As the work experience is unpaid I need to cover all my costswhich come to about £3,000. According to John O’Ceallaigh, the ritualof afternoon tea owes it origins to Anna,the 7th Duchess of Bedford. As a younglady in the 1800s, she lived in a timewhere it was common to eat only twomain meals a day, with breakfastscheduled early in the morning anddinner occurring late in the evening.Weakened and irritated by hunger pangseach day, she decided to schedule timeto take tea and cake each afternoon. Thisprivate ceremony was firstly donesecretly in her bedroom but, over time,powdered ladies with towering wigscame to join her and the practice becamefashionable.

Nowadays this centuries-old andquintessentially British tradition is keptalive in tearooms, hotels and statelyhomes throughout the country.

For Malvern residents there is no need toventure to Betty’s tearooms in Harrogateor Claridges in London to experience anequally scrumptious afternoon treat insimilarly luxurious surroundings.Afternoon teas can be enjoyed atStanbrook Abbey, in Callow End. Formerlyhome to an order of Benedictine nuns, this

magnificent setting makes afternoon teahere a very unique experience. I went withmy mother and friends to find out why.

Amidst the Abbess’ coats of arms andhand-carved wood panelled walls of theThompson Dining Hall there was anundeniable sense of sophistication andoccasion.

After choosing from a selection of looseTeapigs leaf tea, we sat back as a tower ofdainty finger sandwiches, homemadefruit scones with silky dollops of clottedcream and red-currant jam, and chocolatefondue with strawberries andmarshmallows were presented forinspection. Our highlights have to includethe salmon sandwiches on soda bread,and the retro cream-filled Brandy Snaps.

Stanbrook Abbey is more than just thevenue for a tea-time treat though: aguided tour around the arched cloisters,the dusky Library, the beautiful formerchapel (where we were shown a trap doorbeneath the pews where priests wouldhave been hidden), the Grooms’ roomwith a door humorously labelled “EscapeRoute” and the sophisticated circular

event room St. Anne’s Hall, showed usjust how versatile this venue is. Ideal forweddings, conferences and corporateevents, Malvern is lucky to have such aunique venue with such a specialatmosphere so close by, and I urge you tobook yourself and friends for anafternoon of sheer delight.

INGREDIENTS2 tbsp olive oil½ carrot, finely chopped½ small onion, finely chopped ½ fennel bulb, finely chopped2½ garlic cloves, finely chopped½ tsp dried red chilli flakes1 tsp fennel seeds20g/¾oz dried porcini mushrooms, soakedin warm water for ten minutes1 x 400g/14oz can chopped tomatoes2 litres/3 pints 10fl oz fish stock200g/7oz potatoes, peeled and cut into1.5cm/¾in piecespinch saffronsalt and freshly ground black pepper 250g/9oz clams, cleaned (discard anywhich do not close when tapped)2 red mullet fillets200g/7oz monkfish fillet, membraneremoved, cut into chunks110ml/4fl oz white wine2 tbsp finely chopped parsley

PREPARATION METHOD• Heat one tablespoon of oil and add thecarrot, onion, fennel, two of the choppedgarlic cloves,the chilli flakes and fennel seeds and frygently for 2-3 minutes.• Drain the mushrooms and squeeze outany excess liquid, then roughly chop. • Add the chopped porcini to the panalong with the tomatoes and cook over alow-medium heat for 20 minutes, or untilthe tomatoes have broken down and thevegetables are softened.• Add the fish stock and bring to the boil.

Reduce the heat and simmer for 20minutes.• Meanwhile, place the potatoes into asaucepan of boiling water along with thesaffron and cook for 5-8 minutes, or untiljust tender. Drain and set aside.Remove the fish broth from the heat, then

either use a stick blender or pour into ablender and blend until smooth. Season, totaste, with salt and freshly ground blackpepper.• Heat a shallow pan until hot, then addthe remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Addthe clams, red mullet, monkfish and whitewine, cover with a lid and cook for 1-2minutes, shaking the pan from time totime.• Remove the lid and discard any clamswhich have not opened.• Add the fish broth and saffron potatoesand bring to the boil. Reduce the heat andsimmer for a few minutes until heatedthrough.In a bowl, mix the chopped parsley withthe remaining chopped garlic. Sprinkle themixture over the top of the stew and servewith crusty bread.

It is very unusual for vets to come across somethinggenuinely new. A lot of scare stories over the years havebeen found to be a recurrence of an older disease that hasjust decided to come to light again. The recent spate of dogmortalities in the New Forest and elsewhere due to‘Alabama Rot’ are an exception, and this is something newworthy of note to our dog owners in the area.

The new disease appears to be associated with twooverlying symptoms which present some time after a doghas been for a walk. The first is skin lesions presenting asulcers 1-4cm in diameter on the lower limbs and belly. Thesecond is acute kidney failure starting some 2-7 days afterthe skin lesions are found. The skin lesions are ulcerswhich do not look like wounds that may have beensustained, but happen due to small portions of skin dyingas the blood vessels supplying the skin become closed off.The kidney failure happens as a result of the blood vesselsin the kidney suffering from a similar fate, resulting in avery depressed, dehydrated and vomiting patient.

The main problem with Alabama Rot is that once startedand the main symptoms have appeared it is often too late toprovide specific help other than supportive care and hencethe concern to catch the disease as early as possible.

Currently there have been only a handful of cases, andthese have been a long way from Malvern and thesurrounding area. There have been, however, a few cases

that have been suspicious inWorcestershire that have

remained unconfirmed.We are watching closelythe situation regardingtreatments and diagnosticsfor any developments in the

future. As always it isimportant not to overstate the

risks, but we wouldencourage you to

seek veterinaryattention if anyskin lesionsappear in anunexplained way on

your dog.
