    Porto Porto Understand

    5

    Port o

    Port o

    Understand

Porto is a busy industrial and commercial center. The city itselfisn't very populous (about 240,000 inhabitants), but the Portometropolitan area (Greater Porto) has some 1,500,000 inhabi-tants in a 50 km radius, with cities like Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia,Gondomar, and Espinho.

The city was built along the hills overlooking the Douro riverestuary, and its historical center was awarded World Heritagestatus by UNESCO in 1996. It has been continuously inhabitedsince at least the 4th Century, when the Romans referred to itas Portus Calle

Porto has a semi-Mediterranean climate, although it's strongly

affected by the Atlantic ocean, which makes it cooler than oth-er cities with this climate. However, temperatures can rise ashigh as 40C in August during occasional heat waves. Wintersare mild and humid, with occasional cold nights where temper-atures can drop below 0C.

Porto has always been a mercantile city, and this is evident inthe style of the buildings lining the Avenida dos Aliados, thecore of the downtown area. The center of town, unlike oth-er major Portuguese cities, which tend towards the baroque,is granite and monumental. Residents of Porto are known asTripeiros (tripe eaters) allegedly due to the fact that the city

went without meat in order to provision the the fleet that left

to conquer Ceuta in North Africa in 1415 (which left from Por-to) and had to subsist on tripe soup, still a specialty of the city.

Citizens of Porto, while definitely Portuguese, hold themselvesapart culturally from the rest of the country, as is expressed inthe often heard phrase "o Porto uma nao" (Porto is a na-tion). Outsiders often consider Porto to be more crass and mer-cantile than the rest of the country, and the inhabitants to besomewhat lacking in social graces. This is likely due to the factthat the city has historically been dominated by Portuguesebourgeoisie and English trading factions rather than the no-bility. Tripeirosof course, disagree, regarding themselves (withsome justification) as being the economic heart of the nation.

As the saying goes, "Porto works, Braga Prays, Coimbra studies, and Lisbon gets the money."

The city is officially styled "a muito nobre, sempre leal e invictacidade do Porto" (the very noble, always faithful, and invinciblecity of Porto). This is usually shortened to "a Cidade Invicta" (theinvincible city) a title won because of Porto's unparalleled re-sistance against Napoleonic troops during the Peninsular war.

The city is quite variegated architecturally, with medieval aswell as modern living side by side. Porto's geography is hardon the feet, but pleasant to the eye. The city is extremely hilly, with many buildings built into a cliff face that overlooks the riv-

er. Stairs cut into the stone run up and down the cliff face andoffer a laborious but rewarding walking tour. Across the river

from Porto proper, in the suburb of Gaia, are located the ware-houses of notable companies dealing with Port Wine, such asClem, Fonseca, Sandemans, Kopke, and others.

Whilst the local attitude is friendly, to outsiders it is worth not-

ing that locals can respond literally to questions, which mayseem slightly off-putting to the uninitiated. An example of thiswould be to ask in a bar if they have a menu (for food) and toreceive a straight 'no' as a response; it's after further questionsthat one can find out that the establishment doesn't sell food -such a response is not considered rude, it is merely direct andliteral.

If you speak in Spanish to a local, you will be largely understoodand as a rule they will freely converse with you, but from timeto time, more so with the older generation, you may be politelyreminded that you are in Portugal and the native language isPortuguese.

S Carneiro Airport, (IATA: OPO), Pedras Rubras,Maia (+351)229 432 400, . Also known as Aeroporto do Porto or Aeroportode Pedras Rubras this is the third busiest airport in the countryand is about 15 km from the city centre. Just outside of the air-port is the AeroBus which for 4 - 2005 - takes you to Praa daLiberdade (city center) or will drop you off at the Pousada daJuventude. A similar taxi trip will cost 20. the Metro line con-nects the Airport to the city centre, offering a fast and peace-ful ride into the heart of the city, for 1,50. At night, between1.30 and 6.00, there is no regular connection, so using a taxi orspending a night at the airport is the only possibility.

Ryanair offer cheap flights from several cities like LondonStansted, Liverpool, Dublin, Dusseldorf-Weeze, Eindhoven,Brussels-Charleroi, Frankfurt-Hahn, Maastricht, Paris-Beauvais,Milan-Bergamo, Marseille, Bologna, Pisa, Rome, Barcelona,Madrid, Marrakesh and Valencia. easyJet also flies to Geneva,Lyon, Basel, Milan and London-Gatwick.

TAP flies from most European airports but tends to be moreexpensive.

    By train

The city is served by two major train stations, the "So Ben-to" (Saint Benedict) station, and the "Campanh" station. Trainsfrom and to Madrid and Paris are regular, other non-domesticdestinations vary according to demand and time of year. Do-mestic trains are very frequent and usually on time. Be care-ful on the train from Madrid. On at least one route, the com-puter systems will say you need to change trains at Guillarei in

northern Spain. However, Guillarei has stopped trains throughPortugal since 2004. Instead, you will need to transfer to a sta-

    By car

The city is served by five major highways: A1, which connectsPorto to Lisbon, A29 which connects Porto to Aveiro, A3 con-nects Porto to Braga, A28 connects Porto to Viana do Casteloand the northern Portuguese border, and A4, which goes east-wards from the city towards Vila Real. The IC29 connects Portoto the neighboring city of Gondomar. The city is also served by2 ring highways, the A41 (still incomplete) which is the outerring, and VCI/IC23 or A20 which connects all the main placesinside the city. The A20/VCI, A28, A29 and A41 are all free high-

ways at the moment, but there are plans to install tolls in thethe latter three, sometime in the future. Generally speaking, thetraffic is usually chaotic and very intense, especially during rushhours.

    By bus

There are many companies providing direct bus trips from ma-jor European countries and also for most of the northern citiesof the country. Try Rodonorte for timetables. Visit also PortoBus Service .

By boatThere is a cargo and recreational harbor called Leixes in theneighboring city of Matosinhos. Modest-sized cruise ships candock just outside a drawbridge to the inner harbor. Beneaththe south approach to the bridge is a station for the light railsystem (see "By Metro" below) that goes to Oporto.

    Porto Valley

    By car

Porto, like most Portuguese cities, is a nightmare to drive in.Roads vary in conditions - from fully paved to cobbled lanes

that can make even the most shortest of distance seem likea go-kart rally. With that said, keep in mind that the touristic

part of the city (the Ribeira and Baixa) are a never ending mazeof narrow streets, short tempered drivers and snakelike alleys.Better to walk (despite the fact that it's very hilly). Also, driversseem to have forgotten how to drive (apart from pushing thepedals) - therefore, they make their own rules of the road (how-

ever, this generally does not apply to young drivers). Be pre-pared to lose your patience several times whilst driving.

    By metro

The Porto Metro is an incredibly advanced, state of the art lightrail / subway system. Developed in 2001 (for the Porto2001 -European Capital of Culture), the metro is still under construc-tion. It has 5 lines, that run across the center of Porto, and downto some suburban areas. It is quick, and probably the most ef-ficient way to get around Porto. Some major areas of the city, however, are not that well served by the metro, although a new

lines will be opening soon. Tickets must be purchased before-hand. They can be sold at the machines in the station (note:if there are no tickets in the machine that day, take the metroto the next station and buy it there!). The ticket is printed ina card called "Andante", and you can purchase as many rides(or travels) you want, in the zone you are staying in (Porto andsurrounding are Z2. Matosinhos Z3. Airport Z4). One travel willtake you anywhere your zone, and you can travel as many timesas you want within one hour. If you plan on using it again, DoNot throw away the card! The card can be re-charged (the card

itself costs around 0.50). You can also buy daily passes, whichis more convenient. If you plan on living in Porto, or staying

for more than three weeks, it is recommended you get the "An-dante Gold". The card costs 5, and will allow unlimited travel, without time limit. However, the zoning system is a lot differentin the "Gold" version then in the "Blue version". There aroundaround 11 zones in Andante Gold (C1, C2, S11, etc.) The cen-tre is C1. When you buy the card, you must purchase anotherzone (C1 is automatically included). The Andante Gold can beused in all metro lines, the funicular and all buses . When youare buying the Andante Gold, you must have a picture of your-self (your passport photo will do. They can amplify the imagefrom the passport to the card in seconds). An important note:your andante must be validated before you enter the metro, bus or funicular. There are no barriers to stop you at the metro,

but the Metro police enter the cars and check your Andante tomake sure you have validated it, and are travelling within yourzones. More info at Metro do Porto

suburban trains, plus they're easier to buy and recharge on anymetro station or newspaper seller with "payshop" symbol. An-dante blue card costs 1 and can be charged with how many

journeys you like. Every bus stop has at least a timetable andlines served. There's also a code so you can get a (paid) SMSshowing minutes left to next arrivals updated in real time. Thebusiest ones have electronic displays with timetables and citymaps. Every bus inside has a display showing the name of nextstop, so it's easy to keep track of them.

    By taxi

A fast way of getting around the city, although traffic conges-tions near the city center might be a problem. However, be ex-pected to pay a high price for these services, especially com-pared to the other public transportations such as bus and sub-way.

    Porto Taxi Transfer

    By boat

There are ferry boats that connect Porto to the neighboringcity of Vila Nova de Gaia, although you can easily walk or travelby car, metro or bus to the other side. Also the are numerous

tourist boats which travel up the Douro river, where you canget fantastic views of the green landscape the region has to of-fer.

    By helicopter

Not exactly a public transportation, but its a wonderful way tosee the city from above. Near the Douro there is a heliport witha helicopter available for people to use to get to know the cityas a whole. Travelling accompanied will make the flight cheap-er.

By Funicular dos GuindaisThis is a cable railway system. Use this if you don't wish to walkup the steep streets of Porto. This system connects the Ribeirato the Batalha square, in the city centre, it also has a panoram-ic view of the River Duoro. As of February 2007, a single tripcost 1. Do

Take a cruise upriver. Go at least as far as Pinho - the land-scape is absolutely stunning. If you choose to do this in the

summer, don't forget your factor 50 sun screen! Cruises onthe Douro River .

Go on a self-guided walking tour of the city of Porto. .

You might also want to visit the Drago Stadium, home ofFC Porto. The team has a rich history, having won the WorldClub Championship or Intercontinental Cup twice, Champi-ons League twice, UEFA Cup once and UEFA Supercup once- and the stadium is worth a visit on the architecture alone. Ifyou are lucky you might get to see a game of the ChampionsLeague... also, just across from the stadium you have a largeshopping center, according to a joke built to block the windfrom affecting the stadium.

I would absolutely suggest taking a port wine tour! This isa must as Porto is the port wine capital (or so they've self-proclaimed) but the value is phenomenal. The cellars are inGaia, across the river, and there are extremely convenientbus pick-ups from easily accessible areas to take you up thewinding hills to the cellars. I couldn't believe the price: I paid3 Euros for a tour that lasted approximately an hour, with atasting. I believe most all have English speaking tours andmy cellar had English, Spanish, and Portuguese. I wish I hadhad time to do them all! There are quite a number of freetastings where you will get a couple of glasses.

    Learn

Basic Portuguese language is very much appreciated. English,French, Galician, Catalan, Italian or Spanish may be spoken orunderstood at major hotels/resorts. For major tourist attrac-tions such as river boat rides or Port Cellar tours, generally thechosen language for a given tour slot is granted on a first-come-first-served basis, if you want a tour to be guaranteed tobe in your language, turn up early and request it.

The Fast Forward Language Institute, in the centre of town, of-

fers a variety of courses in Portuguese language and culture in-cluding 3 hour "Portuguese for survival", aimed at foreign visi-tors to the city.

    Buy

For shopping, take a stroll around the Mercado do Bolhowhich has a food market and handicrafts stores, and SantaCatarina street(highly recommended, even if only to stroll),which is near Bolho. Cedofeita street is also a busy shoppingstreet, as well as Boavista. Porto and the suburbs have plenty

of shopping centers, including Norte Shopping, Cidade BomSucesso, Arrbida Shopping, Parque Nascente, Gaia Shopping,

etc. These are open every day, but are usually overcrowdedduring the weekends and rainy days.

Port wine, of course. This is the right place for it,in the city ofGaia, just south of the Douro river. You can also find great deals

in clothes and shoes, especially during discount seasons.MUUDA, Rua do Rosrio, 294-4050-522, (email:[email protected]), . "Art, food and design". This concept store

offers a great variety of products signed by Portuguese de-signers. Fashion, objects, books, jewelery, shoes, gourmet andarts. You can have lunch at MUUDA, experience a wine or sushiworkshop, learn how to make tricot, the newest painting tech-niques, photography... and much more.

    Eat

Porto has some of the finest restaurants in Portugal.

Eating at Porto is no different than elsewhere in Portugal. Ex-pect sturdy meals, and if you can, try "Tripas moda do Porto".Be aware, however, that this is a tripe dish. Citizens of Porto arecalled tripeiros(tripe-eaters) on account of this dish.

Also try a typical dish called "Francesinha", which literally trans-lated means little French lady. This city is just about the onlyplace in the world where you can find it. However, in many oth-er northern Portuguese cities you can find a low quality versionof it. Essentially it is a toast with a lot of meat inside (beef, porkmeat, ham...). It is covered with cheese and a spicy sauce. Most

importantly, this dish must be accompanied by beer and notwine.

A good tip is taking the bus or subway to Matosinhos in July, there will be the fish festival. Freshly caught fish is being servedthe same day at barbecues lined up in the streets just a fewblocks from the main beach. You choose a fish (only whole fish)and they prepare it on the streets for you - not a fancy restau-rant, but together with the local people you are eating the besttasting fish you ever had! Try a dourada, it is delicious.

Another "must eat" is "bacalhau" which is actually salted cod-fish. It is cooked in various ways but you should try "Bacalhau

    com Natas".

Porto is dotted with thousands of different bakeries (PoQuente) and pastry shoppes (Pastelarias). Apart from serv-ing delicious (and quite inexpensive) goods, they are alsoequipped with a side-cafe that serves all sorts of coffees (Pin-go, Meia de Leite, etc.) and sandwiches (Tosta Mista-ham andcheese toastie). Note that, unlike the other river side cafes inthe city, these establishments do not have picturesque views ofPorto (that's expensive, and in the end, you'd be the one pay-ing for that bill). Instead, they attract tourists by offering goodfood at very cheap prices.

Most locals drink black coffee (espresso).

The third oldest cafe in Porto, it is commonly known as "O Piol-ho" (the Louse). The cafe looks out on the street facing a facultyof the Universidade do Porto, and had been a meeting placefor students since the 19th century. Plaques donated by gradu-ating medical classes from the early 20th century onward dec-orate the walls. During the fascist period (1926-1974) it wasa regular meeting place of "undesirables" (according to theregimes point of view), and was accordingly under regular sur-veillance by the secret police. On one occasion it was raided bythe GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana) who have a post near-by, and they charged their horses into the cafe itself. It is uncer-tain if the place's current disorder results from this or more re-cent activities. Service is surly, the place isn't at all fancy, but itis usually stuffed to the gills with students. Its also quite cheap.

Porto is home to port wine of course, and there are many winer-ies around the city where port wine is brewed. History

    Main article: History of Porto

    Early history

    Porto Cathedral

The history of Porto dates back to the 4th century, to theRoman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Celtic and Pro-to-Celtic ruins have been discovered in several areas, and theiroccupation has been dated to about 275 BC. During the Ro-man occupation, the city developed as an important commer-

cial port, primarily in the trade between Olissipona (the mod-ern Lisbon) and Bracara Augusta (the modern Braga).

Porto fell under the control of the Moors during the invasion ofthe Iberian Peninsula in AD 711. In 868, Vmara Peres, a Christ-ian warlord from Gallaecia, and a vassal of the King of Asturias,Lon and Galicia, Alfonso III, was sent to reconquer and securethe lands from the Moors. This included the area from the Min-ho to the Douro River: the settlement of Portus Caleand the

area that is today known as Vila Nova de Gaia. Portus Cale, laterreferred to as Portucale, was the origin for the modern name ofPortugal. In 868 Count Vmara Peres established the First Coun-

ty of Portugal, or (Portuguese: Condado de Portucale), usual-ly known as Condado Portucalense after reconquering the re-gion north of Douro.

In 1387, Porto was the site of the marriage of John I of Portu-gal and Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt; thissymbolized a long-standing military alliance between Portugaland England. The Portuguese-English alliance,(see the Treatyof Windsor (1386)) is the world's oldest recorded military al-liance.

In the 14th and the 15th centuries, Porto's shipyards con-tributed to the development of Portuguese shipbuilding. Itwas also from the port of Porto that, in 1415, Prince Henry theNavigator (son of John I of Portugal) embarked on the con-quest of the Moorish port of Ceuta, in northern Morocco. This

expedition by the King and his fleet, which counted amongstothers Prince Henry, was followed by navigation and explo-ration along the western coast of Africa, initiating the Por-tuguese Age of Discovery. The nickname given to the peopleof Porto began in those days; Portuenses are to this day, col-

loquially, referred to as tripeiros(English: tripe peoples), refer-ring to this period of history, when higher-quality cuts of meatwere shipped from Porto with their sailors, while off-cuts andby-products, such as tripe, were left behind for the citizens ofPorto: tripe remains a culturally important dish in modern dayPorto.

Wine, produced in the Douro valley, was already in the 13thcentury transported to Porto in barcos rabelos(flat sailing ves-

sels). In 1703 the Methuen Treaty established the trade rela-tions between Portugal and England. In 1717, a first Englishtrading post was established in Porto. The production of portwine then gradually passed into the hands of a few Englishfirms. To counter this English dominance, Prime Minister Mar-quis of Pombal established a Portuguese firm receiving themonopoly of the wines from the Douro valley. He demarcatedthe region for production of port, to ensure the wine's quali-ty; this was the first attempt to control wine quality and pro-duction in Europe. The small winegrowers revolted against hisstrict policies on Shrove Tuesday, burning down the buildingsof this firm. The revolt was called Revolta dos Borrachos(revoltof the drunks).

Between 1732 and 1763, Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni de-signed a baroque church with a tower that would become itsarchitectural and visual icon: the Torre dos Clrigos (English:Clerics Tower). During the 18th and 19th centuries the city be-came an important industrial centre and saw its size and pop-ulation increase.

    19th century

The invasion of the Napoleonic troops in Portugal under Mar-shal Soult also brought war to the city of Porto. On 29 March

1809, as the population fled from the advancing troops andtried to cross the river Douro over the Ponte das Barcas(a pon-

toon bridge), the bridge collapsed under the weight. This eventis still remembered by a plate at the Ponte D. Luis I. The Frencharmy was rooted out of Porto by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke ofWellington, when his troops crossed the Douro river from theMosteiro da Serra do Pilar (a former convent) in a brilliant day-light coup de main, using wine barges to transport the troops,so outflanking the French Army. In August 1820, Porto rebelledagainst the English presence. A Civil War took place in early 20'sbetween those supporting Constitutionalism and a change ofregime, and those opposed to this change, keen on near-ab-solutism and led by D.Miguel. In 1822, a liberal constitutionwas accepted, partly through the efforts of the liberal assem-bly of Porto (Junta do Porto). When Miguel of Portugal took

the Portuguese throne in 1828, he rejected this constitutionand reigned as an absolutist monarch. Porto rebelled again andhad to undergo a siege of eighteen months between 1832 and1833 by the absolutist army. Porto is also called "Cidade Invic-ta" (English: Unvanquished City) after resisting the Miguelist

siege. After the abdication of King Miguel, the liberal constitu-tion was re-established.

Known as the city of bridges, Porto built its first permanentbridge, the Ponte das Barcas(a pontoon bridge), in 1806. Three

years later it was sabotaged. It was replaced by the Ponte D.Maria II, popularised under the name Ponte Pnsil(suspended

bridge) and built between 184143; only its supporting pylonshave remained.

The Ponte D. Maria, a railway bridge, was inaugurated the 4thof November of that same year; it was considered a feat ofwrought iron engineering and was designed by Gustave Eiffel,

notable for his Parisian tower. The later Ponte Dom Lus I re-placed the aforementioned Ponte Pnsil. This last bridge wasmade by Teophile Seyrig, a former partner of Eiffel. Seyrig wona governmental competition that took place in 1879. Buildingbegan in 1881 and the bridge was opened to the public on 31

    October 1886.[citation needed]

Unrest by Republicans led to a revolt in Porto on 31 January1891. This would result ultimately in the creation of the Por-tuguese Republic in 1910.

A higher learning institution in nautical sciences (Aula de Nu-tica, 1762) and a stock exchange (Bolsa do Porto, 1834) were

established in the city, but would be discontinued later.

    20th century

In 1958 and 1960, Porto's streets hosted the Formula One Por-tuguese Grand Prix.
