City police are vexed atthe growing number ofcommunal clashes inthe Old City of late.

police commissioner AnuragSharma said a gang or gangsfrom outside are believed to bebehind most of the troubles late-ly and the police were trying toidentify them.

“A mischievous gang seemsto be active in the City to createpanic. Preliminary investigation

throws light that no local per-sons are interested in kicking upa communal clash. The violencelast night in Ziaguda andSabzimandi is a sequel to thedeliberate attempt to disturbcommunal amity in the City,” he said.

Trouble erupted last night inSabzimandi and Ziaguda after areligious flag was burnt, whichis said to be a retaliatory act of asimilar incident that happenedtwo days ago. Soon two com-munities came face to face andviolence broke out and arson

took place. Some 10 shops wereset ablaze in Ziaguda and twoplaces of worship wereattacked. Soon police imposedprohibitory orders.

The commissioner toldPostnoon that detectives were atwork to trace those responsiblefor the violence and picketshave been set up outside impor-tant places of worship.

Meanwhile, the commission-er has put on high alert SouthZone police and Musheerabadpolice. Musheerabad had wit-nessed group clashes recently.

Senior officers are monitor-ing the situation and investiga-tions. Task Force and RapidAction Force have also beenposted at crucial points to assistthe local police. Police believethe key to the current spate oftrouble could be the issue thathappened at Musheerabad.Detectives in civil dress are alsoposted to ferret out informationon trouble makers, police said.As of now, there is no definiteclue to the elements indulging introuble, but police are hopeful ofa breakthrough soon.

The column that teaches everyonesomething new about the way theCity functions.

1 Looks like there is no respitefor City cops.

Just when the cops thought theycould take a breather after all thehardwork they put in for the CoP,communal tension in Old City hasreared its ugly head.

2 They’ve done a good job,but they need to do more.

The traffic cops might’ve done agreat deal to curb drunk driving, but when it comes to keeping acheck on vehicle modification theyhave a long way to go.

3 After Union Cabinet reshuf-fle, focus is now on AP.

Looks like it pays to be in the CM’sgood books. After all, he mighthave a big say in the State Cabinetreshuffle.

Passion crime capitalLast year we had reported how a

youth had stabbed an engineeringstudent when she refused toreciprocte to his feelings. Shortly after,he himself committed suicide byjumping in front of a train. For a state where passion crimes are ascommon as the traffic on its streets, this incident was just another ‘featherin its cap’.

Many dangers thewantonly modifiedvehicles pose tocivic life, several

commuters, citizens and policeofficials admit that a lot more isto be done to regulate the City’sunruly traffic. While many havecome forward in praise of thetraffic police’s many campaignsagainst drunk driving, tintedwindows on vehicles, and freeleft, the need for carrying thegood work forward to checkmodified vehicles and pollutionis emphasised. But the policehave their own woes too.

Among many problems thatcripple the traffic police, the lackof coordination with the RTA isa major one. While officials fromthe traffic police departmentadmit that better coordination isyet to be achieved, the RTA haslagged behind in raising anysort of campaign against themany traffic issues we face inour times.

As admin inspector AVSrinivas says, “The RTA needsto begin rule enforcement strict-ly and coordinate with thepolice to help curb traffic issues.Getting a driving license is easi-er than booking a movie ticketthese days, which should saysomething about the kind ofdrivers we have on our streets.”

The fact that there are busi-nesses in the City that thrive onmodifying vehicles is an indica-tion of the blatant rule violationwe have in the City. “Peoplegenerally tend to resist changeas a natural habit. InHyderabad, all rules belong tothe rule books and stay in therule books. I agree that this is a

serious issue and it is to be takenup with the higher authoritiessoon,” said DCP of traffic policeMK Singh.

Officials from the depart-ment agreed that they wereshort of infrastructure and train-ing to recognise and apprehendvehicles modified beyond theiroriginal designs.

Citizens and commuters tooare in two minds about theentire department. “I deeplyrespect the traffic departmentfor enforcing the drunk drivingcampaign and the free left cam-paign. It has helped make ourroads safer. But the departmentneeds to focus on training thebottom ranks of their officers tobe more gentle and decent. Ialso hope that the Intelligent

Traffic Management System willhelp ease our traffic woes,” saysAneesh Kumar, an engineeringstudent.

“Perhaps, this departmenthas seen a facelift ever since CVAnand took charge. The depart-ment has been active bothonline and offline and they havemade good changes to traffic

policies. But a lot more has to be done, especially the security and policing on theORR road where so many people have lost their lives,”says Syed Mubbasheer, a HighCourt advocate.

Citizens also feel that theroot cause of rash driving in thisCity would be solved if thepolice department played a big-ger role during driving licensegrants. “There is so much cor-ruption and malpractice in theRTA that it is of no surprise thateverybody has a car or a bike todrive in the City. The policedepartment should look intothis urgently as it will help solve a lot of problems,” saysNeha Mitra, a call centreemployee.

Good job cops, but a lotmore needs to be done

While most citizens agree that the traffic cops have done a great deal tomake roads safer, they need to do more and not rest on their laurels.

CAMPAIGN

Citizens also feel thatthe root cause of rashdriving would besolved if the copsplayed a bigger roleduring drivinglicense grants.

There was no use of theUnion Cabinet reshufflewithout changing the

Rao is sure that the

Congress party would notgive Telangana either.“Putting more on ministerialgaddi is no great way tofavour the State,” he said.Besides, by not including theleaders who were in the fore-front of the two movementsthe Congress leadership hadproved again that it was notready to make its stand clearon the T issue.

On the State governmentdecision to resume land allot-ted to Lepakshi KnowledgeHub in Ananthapur district, the TDP leader sought toknow why so much time wasrequired for it and why landsallotment to Brahmani Steels,Brahmani Airport, BrahmaniInfratech, Indu Tech,Kakinada SEZ were yet to beresumed. Focus now shifts to HyderabadHundreds of hopefuls in the Congress have begun lobbying in the right

earnest to corner PCC posts and other nominated posts in the State.INKESHAF [email protected]

Having achieved somesort of stability afterthe Union Cabinetexpansion where AP

got a fair share of berths, thefocus of the party organisationhas now shifted to strengtheningof the APCC and grassroots.

The leadership agrees thatthe challenge for Congress in APnow is to strengthen the partycadres, especially in the wake ofpolitical activism by rivals likeTDP and YSR Congress.

The party higher-ups want toresort to a short-cut of filling upthe nominated posts that wouldcome to some 10,000 and also fill-up the PCC hierarchy, which hasbeen pending since BotsaSatyanarayana was put at thehelms. Botsa had made severalattempts to get a go ahead fromthe party high command to reor-ganise the committee after takingcharge, but all his attempts wentin vain owing to different rea-sons. “The reorganisation of

APCC and 23 district Congresscommittees are pending since avery long time. Our presidenttried many times to reconstitutethese committees. Many politicalreasons like continuous by-elec-tions in the State and other rea-sons delayed the entire process. But, the Union Cabinet expan-sion has paved the way for thehigh command to undertake thisprocess,” APCC general secre-tary G Niranjan told Postnoon onMonday.

As far nominated posts areconcerned, many party leadersand hopefuls have already madethe rounds of the State top lead-ers including Chief Minister NKiran Kumar Reddy and PCCpresident Botsa. Lobbying is infull swing. “I have met the CMand requested him to appoint meas the chairman of BCCommission. I hope that he willrespond positively to myrequest,” said senior party leaderand former BC Commission

member Dr V KrishnamohanRao. Another Congress leaderPyata Ramesh hoped that theparty high command wouldspeed up the process of filling upof nominated posts as its handsare free now. A few days ago, theCM met party high commandleaders in Delhi and held discus-sions with them on filling up ofthese posts as well.

SENIOR LEADERS AIM HIGH On the other hand, many seniorparty leaders are hoping to getpromotions at the AICC levelincluding membership ofCongress Working Committee(CWC), the highest decisionmakes body of the congressparty. These leaders includeFormer PCC president DSrinivas, Rajya Sabha member VHanumantha Rao, and AICC sec-retary and MLC P SudhakarReddy. Rumours are alreadydoing the rounds that D Srinivasmay be appointed as AICC gen-eral secretary in recognition ofhis services to the party.Attempts are also being made by

the party high command to con-vince party MP KavuriSambasiva Rao, who resignedfrom his MP seat after not gettinga cabinet berth, by offering himthe CWC membership.

Former mayorBanda

Karthika Reddy, who hadunsuccessfullylobbied withher Congressparty for theSecunderabad Assembly seat lasttime, is now lobbying for thesame with a veiled threat of join-ing the YSRC if it is denied to her.

Sources said that she wouldswitch her party loyalty to theYSRC as the Congress was not infavour of her. But she would firstpressurise the party afresh beforecrossing over.

A keen contest for the seatis likely between her and theincumbent Jayasudha.

At the meeting of the StandingCommittee held on Monday, the members mostly focusedon pending relocation of poles

after widening of many roads that wereleading to accidents and the issue of gov-ernment lands being allocated to reli-gious structures.

Members from Congress pointed outthat these poles were causing accidents, particularly during the nights and askedthe mayor to immediately focus on thepressing issue. When the issue of landallocation to religious structures cameup for discussion, they vehementlyopposed the move saying that there weremany places of worship, but what citi-zens lack are graveyards. Instead of pro-viding space for religious structures the

government should give land for burialand cremation.

On the issue of occupation of parksand pending court cases, the membersfrom Congress asked as to what theCouncil was doing. For which the estate

wing was asked to produce related infor-mation by the next Standing Committeemeeting. The issue of hoardings alsobrought up, where the issue of delay ininduction of committee was also broughtto the fore. The other subjects discussedincluded, relocation of cell towers, theissue of which is also in the courts.

The mayor instructed the commis-sioner, GHMC to hold a meeting withcommittee members within two weeks’time with regard to shifting of electricalpoles. He also directed the commissionerto hold an enquiry on Srinivas, EE, elec-trical, South Zone. Action would be initi-ated based on the report in the nextstanding committee meeting. Directionswere given to AMOH (assitant medicalofficers of health) to inspect personallythe quality of oil, being used by vendors. The engineer-in-chief was asked to pro-duce a list of lakes, which have beenproposed by the next meeting.

Elderly demand empowerment

Congress members argue that instead of allotting land for religiousstructures focus should be on providing space for graveyards.

The Care for Lonely event saw a large number of women participants in comparison to its last meet.

M [email protected]

Senior women are coming out ofthe shadows. They too demanda right to choose the type of life

and partner. The clear evidencecame out at the ‘Care for LonelyElders’ organised by Thodu Needaon Sunday. The first such meetingheld in 2010 had just six womenparticipating, but on Sunday, twoyears after the organisation came

into being, 30 women participated.“It is revolutionary,” remarked

the founder-president NMRajeshwari. Of the 400 members ofThodu Needa, 120 are elderlywomen. In two years, the organisa-tion also blazed a trail by helping 40elders get married. The selection isleft to the individuals. The only con-dition the organisation puts in isthat the man and woman seeking tolive-in together or get married isthat either their spouse should be

The dental paingenerally can be 2 origins – (i)Gum pain (ii) Tooth.

GUM PAIN: Gum pain mainly isdue to improper maintenanceof mouth –improperbrushing(insufficient orexcessive).Insufficientbrushing, where the tar-tar & plaqueremoval is not sufficiently donecausing plaque accumulationthat slowly hardens into calculusand settles and stabilizes onteeth & gums finding its happyhome resulting in gum infec-tions. Calculus is nothing buthardened layer of tartar, fooddebris and huge amounts ofbacteria, visible as yellowish orblack brown bands covering orbordering the teeth, slowlydamaging & eating away thegums. This gum infection showsoff as either bleeding / swollen/spongy gums, that are red incolour, loosening of teeth, severe pain in jaws referring to

Gum problems also affectthe general health. Causing gas-tro intestinal problems & cardiacproblems. Any business shouldstand apart from com-petitors by doingthings better and

uniquely without ignoring thevalue addition it provides to thecustomer. Anuj Tripathi (right),a post graduate in biotechnolo-gy, saw the business opportuni-ty and started a research train-ing institute in 2009. Heobserved that short-term cours-es with industry-oriented syl-

labus with high teaching stan-dards can bring value additionto the students. His business ini-tiative, Clini India, a trainingacademy for clinical researchand management, has seenaround 100 per cent growth in

revenues year on year andtrained over 450 students in dif-ferent clinical research courses.

Talking about the idea, hesays, “The idea was to bringexperts from the industry astrainers and to offer short termcourses which act as a bridge tostep in to the industry after theirgraduation. The initial invest-ments were very less as westarted the training centre at asmall rented property. Overtime, we have increased theoffice space in accordance withthe number of enrolments.

“Clinical research is an ever

growing industry. It is a contin-uous process and does not getaffected with the economic fac-tors like recession. Ever phar-maceutical company should gowith the trails before launchingtheir medical devices or drugs. It takes almost 12-15 years indeveloping a medicine. There isa lot of work during this processthat is outsourced to IT majorsin the country. These companiestake care of functions like clini-cal data management and phar-macovigilance. With this, thereis a need and demand for corpo-rate and management skills for

the pharmacy and medicalgraduates.”

On the growth of business,he says, “Effective marketingalso played a crucial role inbringing the students to theinstitute. There is a need formarketing across the platformsmoderately in the growing time. There are students who don’tread a newspaper but activeonline. Word of mouth is alsovital in bringing new enrol-ments. Quality training alsohelped us to get enrolmentsthrough referrals,” he says.

The business has expandedto other cities through fran-chisee model. “It helps you tocut down risk and share revenues. By this model, we can concentrate on growthrather than getting too much into internal operations. The company has its networkspread across Kolkata, NewDelhi and Lucknow. It will soonstart its operations in Bangaloreand Mumbai. It is also takingclinical trial assignments fromthe companies, where the teamwill do various things like med-ical writing and regulatory submissions.

It’s literally a battle over gunsin one assembly constituen-cy in Himachal Pradesh. And the guns have to do

with the apple crop. A battle haserupted between arch rivalsCongress and the BJP over theinstallation of anti-hail guns bythe ruling BJP in the apple heart-land of Jubbal-Kotkhai in upperShimla. The Congress smells arat in the installation of the guns, whereas BJP is saying thesehelped save apples worth croresduring the flowering and fruitsetting season from hailstorms.

The state, in 2010, installedthree anti-hail guns in Deorighat,Kathasu and Braionghat inShimla. Horticulture ministerNarinder Bragta and Congress’Rohit Thakur are training theirguns at each other, the third timein a row, from this constituency, which is also the state’s applebasket. Both the candidates arealso prominent apple growers.

“The contract for installingguns was given to a firm with noproprietary experience of its ownand it teamed up with a cloudseeding company. It’s a sheerwaste of central government

funds,” Thakur said.He said that the damage to

the crop was greater in the areaswhere the guns had beeninstalled. Justifying the guns,Bragta told IANS they are stillonly at the trial stage.

“Initially there were somehiccups in the operation of thecannons. But now, the guns areefficiently quelling hailstorms,”

he said. Bragta said one anti-hailgun would only cover one sq km.“In the past two years, there wasno report of damage to the cropin the areas where they wereinstalled. However, the damagewas more in those areas not cov-ered by them.”

He said a `374 crore proposalto purchase anti-hail guns wassubmitted to the central govern-

ment this year. The idea was toinstall 300 guns across the stateto adequately cover the entirefruit-growing areas.

Bragta blamed the centralgovernment for not includinghailstorms as a national calamity. The fruit growers are compensat-ed when they are covered undera national calamity.

The guns contain cannons

connected to a weather radar. When clouds with potential torelease hailstones are formed, theguns send shock waves into thepressure areas, puncturing theclouds and sending down rainrather than hail.

The anti-hail gun techniquehas been functioning successful-ly in the US, Mexico, Canada andTurkey and European countries.

Observers say the issues inthis constituency are almostalways about apples. While theBJP is taking credit for increasingfarm subsidy on anti-hail nets to`50,000 this year, the Congressclaims that it would provide asubsidy of up to 80 per cent.

“The bumpy 80-km-longTheog-Kotkhai-Hatkoti-Rohrustretch is also a major issue,” anobserver said. The state govern-ment allocated the World Bank-funded road widening project, which would serve as a lifelinefor Shimla’s apple belt, toChinese firm Longjian Road andBridge Company Ltd in 2008.

The road was to be complet-ed within 36 months. In August, the government cancelled thecontract with the company.

Thakur said apple cropworth over `1,000 crore wasdamaged in the past four years.

Bragta admitted to a delay inthe project’s execution butblamed the company.

Polling for the 68 assemblyseats in Himachal Pradesh willbe held Nov 4. The votes will becounted only on Dec 20 after theGujarat assembly polls are over.

Krishna’s loss may not be Cong’s gain Krishna is no doubt the tallest Congress leader in the state, and he has a reputation for bringing all sectionsof the party together. However age is no longer on his side. Worse, the party is bitterly divided on caste lines.

SM Krishna quit as externalaffairs minister ostensiblybecause the Congress wants

the services of its tallest leader inKarnataka to recapture power inthe state in the assembly polls, due early next year. A grandplan, no doubt.

The catch, however, is thatthere are few takers for this spin, even within the Congress unit inKarnataka, which is riven bygroupism and differences ofcaste. If Krishna, who has beenreplaced by Salman Khurshid asIndia’s foreign minister, returnsto active state politics, it will bethe second time in just over fouryears that he has moved from

centre to state. After being chief minister for

five years from 1999, the partywas defeated in the 2004 polls; inDecember that year, he wasmade Maharashtra governor.

In March 2008 he quit as gov-ernor to return to state politics, and actively campaigned for theCongress in the assembly polls ofMay that year. The Congress didnot gain much, and the BJP cameto power for the first time in thestate. There was much hype, though, in 2008 when Krishna re-entered Karnataka politics as hewas leaving mostly an honorarypost of governor, usuallyreserved for either ageing lead-

ers or trouble-makers for the rul-ing party at New Delhi.

This time, however, if hereturns to Karnataka, he will bereturning after losing one of themost important portfolios in theUnion government. Krishna wasthe first external affairs ministerfrom Karnataka; the most impor-tant central ministry held byleaders from the state in the pasthad been railways.

Krishna is no doubt thetallest Congress leader in thestate, and he has a reputation forbringing all sections of the partytogether. However, at 80 years, age is no longer on his side.

Worse, the party is bitterly

divided on caste lines with apowerful group of Lingayatcommunity leaders openly cam-paigning to remove the presentKPCC chief G Parameshwara.

Parameshwara is a Dalit butknown to be a staunch followerof Krishna, who belongs to theVokkaliga community.

Krishna, meanwhile, has alsolost much clout in his home dis-trict of Mandya over the years.Given this backdrop, the age fac-tor and the lukewarm responsehe would get from some sectionsin the state Congress, Krishnacan at best play a minimal role, despite the grand things hisparty might say. IANS

Issues in Himachal Pradesh almost always revolve around apples. And this time it looks likethe political apple cart in the region might just be upset over the anti-hail gun technology.

The anti-hail gun tech-nique has been func-tioning successfully inUS, Mexico, Canadaand Turkey andEuropean countries.

These changes wereeffected during the secondquarter review of the mone-tary policy for this fiscalconducted by RBI governor

"The persistence ofinflationary pressures evenas growth has moderated, remains a key challenge. Inthis respect, India is anexception to the globaltrend, which underscoresthe role of domestic struc-tural factors," he said.

US ELECTIONS

CommentTUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2012

14HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTSThere’s nothing man can do when nature decides to punish us. As US isbeing battered by the ‘Frankenstorm’ Sandy here we are being warnedabout Storm Nilam. Man has been battered before, but we won’t be coweddown. With the means what’s left, we will stand up and start again.

Super storm Sandy is abona fide disasterimpacting millions ofAmericans, but asfloodwaters surge

ashore one week from electionday, a discomfiting politicalquestion emerges.

Which candidate stands tolose the most?

President Barack Obama isin office and the man at thehelm. He could sink or swim onhis handling of the federalresponse to such a serious crisisthat has already claimed 13 USlives and caused millions indamage.

Mitt Romney, who aims tounseat Obama on November 6,has shown compassion for vic-tims and has called on support-ers to help fellow Americans inneed, but with no official role inresponse operations risksappearing left out.

“Right now, with the stormmaking landfall and affecting asmany as 50 million people, thepriority has to be on safety andon relief efforts,” a Romneycampaign official told AFP lateon Monday.

“And a lot of campaign deci-sions have to be made with thatin mind.”

The White House offeredsimilar declarations, stressingthe “safety and security ofAmericans” was the top priorityand acknowledging that twofull days of campaigning couldbe lost due to the storm.

“We have to focus on not thecampaign and not the election, but on making sure that all fed-eral resources are both preposi-tioned and in place to helpstates and localities respond tothe storm,” Obama spokesmanJay Carney said.

“THAT’S OUR FOCUS RIGHTNOW”But there is an election to winand, with virtually everyoneagreeing that the presidentialrace will go down to the wire, neither candidate will want tolose ground on the closingstraight.

It will take some expertpolitical cunning, however, todetermine when and how todart back out on the campaigntrail full time without appearingcallous or insensitive to theplight of storm victims.

Stumping for votes inVirginia when more than1,70,000 customers are withoutpower would hardly appear tobe a winning strategy, and yetthe state is one of the nation’stop three political battle-grounds, along with Florida andOhio.

On Sunday, Obama advisor

David Axelrod had worriedpublicly that the storm woulddampen turnout in the earlyvoting so vital to the president’shopes in states like Virginia.

“Obviously we want unfet-tered access to the polls becausewe believe that the more peoplecome out, the better we’re goingto do,” a blunt Axelrod said.Historically, a large electionturnout has generally favoredDemocrats.

But trouble looms for con-servatives in Virginia’s ruralsouthwest, where residentswere in for a major snowstormthat could keep many in thelargely Republican region awayfrom the polls.

Another place the stormcould directly affect the vote isPhiladelphia, the Democraticbastion in left-leaningPennsylvania.

Nearly 400,000 people werewithout power in and aroundthe city on Monday night.Democrats need Philadelphiansto vote in large numbers; if theystay home it presents an oppor-tunity for Romney to snatch avital state.

The storm also offeredopportunity, albeit on a politicalknife-edge, for Obama, allowinghim to pose as a cool, effectiveleader, marshaling governmentresources at a moment when cit-izens most need them. AFP

Show them the way

Recently there was some disturbing news about the alarming attrition rates in the CRPF andthe BSF. However, now the CRPF has taken up a programme that sets an example for

many institutions to follow. Nearly 400 girls from tribal areas in Jharkhand are being impartedtraining by the CRPF through the civil outreach programme in self-defence, nursing, house-

keeping and computers. And not just that, similar programmes have been started in other partsof the country that are strife, too. Well, there’s nothing new about it, one may say. Efforts havebeen made and are being made at all fronts for the upliftment of women. Yet, the sad truth iswe are eons away from reaching where all is fine and fair. Caught in the crossfire between thenaxals and the government forces, these girls did not have much scope for hope... in any way.

Not only that the programme will be an excellent diversion for their minds and hearts drainedof hope, this will broaden their horizon, provide new vistas that will inspire them and give them

choices and empower them to make a choice. That’s what’s needed — not tall speeches.

Who’ll bell the cat?

Too much exposure and no implicationseems the latest trend on the national

scene. While whistle blowers are doing agood job the ruling UPA appears decidedto rubbish all and adopt the attitude ofthe ostrich. In this scenario the mostvexed are the common people who whilepaying higher and higher taxes areunable to decide who is right. The re-entry of Gandhian Anna Hazare is boundto kick up more muck in the already slimyscene but, pray, who will bell the cat?

Living like the dead

AMELIE [email protected]

Left widowed and homelessin a country where she isunwanted, Rahima longs

only to flee strife-torn Myanmaron a perilous journey made by

thousands of other MuslimRohingya before her.

Hundreds of thousands of thestateless people — considered bythe UN to be one of the most per-

secuted minorities on the planet— have left aboard rickety boats

in past decades, and there aresigns of another exodus looming.“We are like dead people. I want

to go to another country. I can-not keep suffering like this,” saidRahima, 55, whose husband and

25-year-old son were killed inBuddhist-Muslim clashes in

western Rakhine state in June.“I don’t have enough food. Howlong can I keep living here?” she

asks. A fresh wave of violencehas left dozens more dead anddisplaced about 30,000 people. In the past Bangladesh was thedestination of choice, but it has

now closed its doors, turningaway boatloads of Rohingya

who attempted to flee the vio-lence in June. Yet for many

Rohingya, the chance of a newlife overseas is worth the risk.

“There is nothing to do here,so it’s natural to try to find some-

thing better,” said Kyaw HlaAung, a Rohingya community

leader in Sittwe. He hopes moreof his people will be able to setoff as soon as the weather per-mits. But for the retired lawyerhimself, who says he spent 14

years in jail for defending farm-ers’ rights, the thought of leaving

is too heart-wrenching.“How can we abandon all

the mosques downtown, howcan we abandon our land?” he

asks. AFP

Rishika in theinitial 25-years-of her life hadalways prided in the fact that sheate well and exercised adequate-ly. What was the reason for thesudden deterioration in herhealth? Rishika approached herdoctor searching for answers. “Like healthy food and exercise, sleep is equally important,”explained her doctor. Accordingto studies, 90 per cent of thecases, people suffering fromsleep disorders and chronic sleeploss also suffers from anotherhealth condition.

CAUSES OF SLEEPLESSESSTalking about the causes of lackof sleep, Dr Aftab Ahmed, seniorphysician, Apollo Hospital,

“When a patient comes to uscomplaining about lack of sleepone looks at the various causes. Itcould be anxiety or stress, related

to some disease such as lung dis-ease, sleep apnea, asthma or gas-tric problems such as acidity.”

Sometimes the lack of sleep

may not be because of a medicalcondition but lifestyle relatedsuch as long work hours and reg-ular late night parties. Studentsalso prior to exams tend to spendlonger hours in the night studying.

“Night shift disorder occursin people who work in shifts, thefluctuating levels of melatonine(hormone) can affect them.Another common cause is Jet lagdue to international travel,” saysDr Ahmed.

EFFECTSThe lack of sleep can have manyeffects on a person. Dr Ahmedsays, “The first possible problemone may come across is effect onone’s day-time work. Their per-formance, thinking and judge-ment will be affected. Depressionmay also be a concern. Lack ofsleep may actually cause a smallproblem to increase or aggravatesuch as diabetes and hyperten-sion.” A person’s socialbehaviour and appearance may

be affected and thus the waypeople look at you will alsochange.

Lack of sleep may also be aconcern when one is driving orin a job that requires driving.Falling asleep behind the wheel or lack of concentrationwhile driving is a cause of manyaccidents.

Various studies have attribut-ed the lack of sleep to be a factorfor other problems such as obesi-ty, irregular heart rhythm, heartailments and stroke.

Lack of sleep need not be thedirect cause unless when itcomes to ailments such as sleepapnea. Dr Ahmed explains,“People with sleep apnea tend tobe obese and may develop bloodpressure more than someonewho does not have sleep apnea.”

SLEEP REQUIREMENTSKeeping our fast-paced lives inmind one needs to adjust ouractivities to get a minimumamount of sleep. Dr Ahmed says,“New borns (0-2 months) maysleep for 12-18 hours, pregnantwoman for eight plus hours, adults may sleep for seven hoursand school children (5-10 years)may sleep for eight hours. Theamount of sleep a person needsdepends on the age and dailyactivity. According to a recentstudy, a person who sleeps forsix to seven hours everyday livesthe longest.”

If a person is unable sleep fora few days to a week it is acuteinsomnia and if they do not sleepfor a month or more it is chronic. If a person is unable to sleep for along time it is important theyvisit a doctor.

SYDNEY: Pancreatic cancer, which tops mortality rates of allcancers, with Apple's founderSteve Jobs being its most famousvictim, is many diseases rolledinto one, says new research.

A large-scale analysis doneby the Institute for MolecularBioscience (IMB), University ofQueensland, defines the com-plexity of underlying mutationsresponsible for pancreatic can-cers in more than 100 patients.

The analysis, Australia's con-tribution to the InternationalCancer Genome Consortium(ICGC), brings together theworld's leading scientists toidentify the genetic drivers behi -nd 50 different cancer types, thejournal Naturetoday reported.

"We found over 2,000 mutat-ed genes in total, ranging fromthe KRAS gene, which wasmutated in about 90 per cent ofsamples, to hundreds of genemutations that were only pre-sent in one or two per cent oftumours," said professor at theIMB, Sean Grimmond, accordingto an IMB statement.

Pancreatic cancer is one ofthe few for which survival hasnot improved substantially overthe past 40 years.

Andrew Biankin, professor atGarvan Institute of MedicalResearch, along withGrimmond, led an internationalteam of more than 100researchers who sequenced thegenomes of 100 pancreatictumours and compared them tonormal tissue to determine thegenetic changes that lead to thiscancer.

"In this study, we found a setof genes, the axon guidancepathway, that is frequently dam-aged in pancreatic cancerpatients and is associated with apotentially poorer outcome forthose patients. It is a new mark-er of pancreatic cancer that canbe used to direct prognoses andtreatments," said Biankin. IANS

RESEARCHToronto-based researchers have found that theinfluenza vaccine could be an important treatment for maintaining heart health.

STUDY

EXPERIMENTS

TORONTO: Getting a flu shot cancut risk of heart disease by 50 percent and cardiac deaths by 40 percent, a new study has claimed.Toronto-based researchers found thatthe influenza vaccine could be animportant treatment for maintainingheart health and warding off cardio-vascular events like strokes andheart attacks.

Dr Jacob Udell, a cardiologist atWomen’s College Hospital and theUniversity of Toronto, and col-leagues looked at published clinicaltrials on this subject, dating back tothe 1960s.

“For those who had the flu shot, there was a pretty strong risk reduc-tion,” Udell said. The flu vaccineprovided an approximate 50 per centreduction in the risk of a major car-diac event (heart attack, stroke, orcardiac death) compared with place-bo after one year of follow-up.

A similar trend was seen for theflu vaccine reducing death from anycause (approximately 40 per cent). The influenza vaccine reduced car-diovascular events and cardiovascu-lar death in people with or withoutheart disease.

The combined studies examineda total of 3,227 patients, with analmost equal split between patientswith and without established heartdisease.

Half of the participants were ran-domly assigned to receive flu vaccineand those that did not typicallyreceived a placebo vaccine. Udellsaid these results provide support forcurrent guideline recommendationsfor influenza vaccination of individ-uals with a prior heart attack, but fora different reason than simply reduc-ing flu risk.

Although it was encouraging to

see a reduction in non-fatal cardiacevents, Udell said a large, lengthiermulti-national study would compre-hensively demonstrate the vaccine'seffectiveness to reduce fatal cardiacevents and save lives.

“The use of the vaccine is stillmuch too low, less than 50 per centof the general population; it's evenpoorly used among health careworkers. Imagine if this vaccinecould also be a proven way to pre-vent heart disease,” Udell said in astatement.

The study was presented at the2012 Canadian CardiovascularCongress.

Progress in fixing a source of genetic diseasePARIS: Scientists on Wednesdayreported that, in pioneeringexperiments on human eggs, they had replaced a geneticmechanism blamed for cripplingdiseases.

The laboratory breakthroughcould one day lead to human tri-als to avert so-called mitochon-drial disorders, they said.

Other experts praised thework but sounded caution.

Described in the journalNature, the research aims atsidestepping genetic defectshanded down by the maternalline through cellular mecha-nisms known as mitochondria.

These are tiny structures thatconvert fats and sugars to ener-

gy for the cell. They only carry a few dozen

genes, or about 0.1 per cent ofthe DNA code, and are separatefrom the nucleus of the cellwhich contains the remainder.

However, when mitochon-drial genes carry a defect, theimpact can be huge. Eye disor-ders, cardiac malfunction, dia-

betes, gastrointestinal and mus-cular diseases and even kinds ofdementia can result.

A team led by ShoukhratMitalipov at the Oregon Healthand Science University inPortland, Oregon, said they hadreached a milestone in years-long research to replace faultymitochondria. AFP

YOKO ONO DIDN’T BREAK UPTHE BEATLES:

Beatles legend Paul McCartneysays that bandmate JohnLennon’s wife Yoko Ono didn’tbreak up the band. In an inter-view, McCartney, 70, denied the

popular wisdom that Lennon’s relationshipwith Ono was the catalyst that led to theband’s break-up, The Guardian reported.

While McCartney said that he hadfound Ono sitting in on Beatles recordingsessions difficult he also said, “She certain-ly didn’t break the group up, the group wasbreaking up.” He also went as far as topraise her influence on Lennon’s solocareer.

“I don’t think he would have written‘Imagine’ without Yoko, so I don’t thinkyou can blame her for anything. WhenYoko came along, part of her attraction washer avant garde side, her view of things, soshe showed him another way to be, whichwas very attractive to him.

“So it was time for John to leave, he wasdefinitely going to leave one way or anoth-er,” he added.

McCartney placed more blame for thegroup’s demise on Allen Klein, the busi-nessman, who succeeded former managerBrian Epstein in 1967. PTI

SCRIBBLING PAD

PREVIOUS PUZZLE ANSWER

How to play kakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku insome ways. But is also suitably different. The keyquestion: “How do you play kakuro?”, well hereare the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakurogrid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It hasrows and columns, and dark cells like in a cross-word. And, just like in a crossword, some of thedark cells will contain numbers. Some cells willcontain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbersreference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are allyou get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — calleda run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be usedbut, like sudoku, each number may only be usedonce.

Let”s have an example to explain this conceptmore clearly:

In the image above, which shows a section ofa kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers “26”and “14” in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells under-neath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could bethe answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combi-nation? Well, this is done through eliminationand cross-referencing. For instance, as you workout the answers for other kakuro clues, this willnaturally limit the valid combinations, and hencethe answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it con-tains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers tothe vertical run underneath the number 30 andthe 11 refers to the two cells to the right, hori-zontally, of the number 11.

SOUTH AFRICA’S TOUR OF AUSTRALIA

The Master of the off-driveonce again got his timingright.

Sourav Ganguly finally badefarewell to all competitive cricket,at the age of 40.

The good thing aboutGanguly is that he timed his exitsvery well. He quit Test cricket at36 with his cricketing powers stillgood. He did not wait to be to beshown the door.

And Ganguly knows best. Hehad to wait nearly four years afterhis first international match, where he scored just three againstthe West Indies, before earning arecall.

This always rankled with him.He was supposedly dropped forbeing ‘arrogant and aloof’.

That was a reputation whichhe carried right from his schoolplaying days. Coming from anaffluent background, Gangulyhad an air about him.

But this attitude helped to adda new dimension to India cricket.Ganguly played an important rolein changing the attitude of Indiancricketers.

India were always taken forgranted by many of the teamsbecause of their timid behaviour. The humbleness of cricketerswere often exploited by sledgingand abuse.

After taking over as captain,

Ganguly instilled aggression inhis players. Thankfully he had abunch of youngsters who willing-ly adopted the no-nonsense atti-tude.

India were playing betterunder him and they wanted toshow their toughness.

The purists and the mediafrowned on him. His shirt wavingincident in England after the teamclinched the Natwest Trophy in2002.

But what Ganguly did was to

repeat what England all-rounderAndrew Flintoff did in India.Once again it was partiality onpart of the critics to single outGanguly. Indian cricket had hadenough.

The aggro reflected on the per-formances. India were becoming aforce to reckon with.

He often got into hot waterwith the authorities. His constantbattles with former coach GregChappell are well-documented.

But nothing can take away

Ganguly’s contribution as one ofIndia’s most successful captainand batsman.

His 7212 runs in 113 Tests ataverage 42.17 and and 11363 41,02runs in 311 one-dayers bear testi-mony to his prowess as a bats-man.

Inspired by David Gower,Ganguly had the same grace asthe England batsman. His off-sidedrives were a joy to behold and heoften pierced gap with precision.

Ganguly had his ups and

downs in Test cricket but healways came back strongly.

Just before his retirement in2008, Ganguly struck a rich vein ofform, particulary in 2007.

His early Test career wasmarked by a weakness against theshort ball which exploited by theopposition. But he worked on itand towards the end of career hadgot over it.

But one-day cricket was hisforte. He formed a great openingpartnership with SachinTendulkar and both put up someexciting and fast scoring partner-ships.

Ganguly always destroyedspinners in the one-dayers. Hewould often dance down the pitchand hit the ball straight for sixes.

He wasn’t among the bestjudge of a run and was somewhatof a specialist in run outs.

Ganguly wasn’t renowned forhis athleticism either.

That aside, his skills extendedto decent slow medium bowlingwhich were useful on many occa-sions. He was also a good catcher.

Ganguly has now become aTV commentator and a good oneat that.

So where does Ganguly standin terms of Indian cricket? His bat-ting certainly contributed in Indiaclimbing up the cricket rankings.

But he will always be knownas a top class captain. Many mayquestion his astuteness but resultsback up his credentials.

The single-most factor whichGanguly did was he converted abunch of gentleman cricketersinto ‘No more Mr Nice Guys’.

Dada finally bids farewellIndian cricket’s Dada, Sourav Ganguly finally bade farewell to all competitive cricket, at the

age of 40. The good thing about Ganguly is that he timed all his exits very well.

SYDNEY: South Africa bowlingcoach Allan Donald Tuesdaycalled his country’s current paceattack the best he has seen, asthey fine-tune ahead of a threeTest series against Australia.

Donald in his prime was oneof the best fast bowlers ever seenin Test cricket, ripping throughopposition batsmen with partnerShaun Pollock, but even headmitted the current crop was aleague above.

“I would have to say that, yes,” Donald told reporters.

“I’m not just saying that, because I was part of an attackwith Shaun Pollock and myself

and a few others, and I say thathumbly and respectfully, I thinkthis is as good as it gets.”

South Africa jetted intoAustralia Sunday aiming to con-solidate their position as thenumber one Test team, whichthey earned in August with aseries triumph in England.

Much pre-series media atten-tion has centred on the quality ofthe South African pace attack, led by Dale Steyn, VernonPhilander and Morne Morkel, and how Australia’s top orderwill deal with them.

Donald, who terrorisedopposition batsmen in the 1990s,

said the South African bowlers’greatest asset was their ability towork as a group.

“They’ve been bowlingtogether for quite some time,” hesaid.

“Momentum’s been builtover the past couple of years, consistency in selection and it’snice to have a group of guys thatknow what they’re about.”

Australian coach MickeyArthur, himself a South African, acknowledged earlier this monththat his top order batsmen face a“baptism of fire”.

“It’s going to be about thebatters,” Arthur said of the

series.“It is going to be about which

top six can adapt better, whichtop six is going to be more con-sistent over the three Test series. Ithink both top sixes are in for areal baptism of fire.”

Australia head to the firstTest in Brisbane next week withEd Cowan opening the inningsalongside big-hitting DavidWarner.

They will be followed to thecrease by Shane Watson and then165-Test veteran Ricky Ponting, who is in fine touch, scoring 350runs at an average of 125.00 inhis last three first-class games.

SCOTT WILLIAMS Agence France-Presse

PARIS: Andy Murray predictedscheduling trouble for futurelate-season ATP events once theWorld Tour Finals leave Londonafter 2013, with the new com-pacted annual calendar likely toforce some hard choices amongplayers.

He spoke before his second-round start at the Paris Masters,a week after leaving organisersin Basel, Switzerland, high anddry by withdrawing with a backinjury from that event.

Now Paris Bercy and tourna-ment director Guy Forget is pay-ing the price as well with theinjury absence of world numberone Roger Federer, which leavesNovak Djokovic on course to topthe year-end rankings for the sec-ond straight year. Djokovic lostthe ranking to the Swiss after 53

weeks when Federer won theWimbledon title.

But the ATP said that Federerended any chance of a return tothe year-end top spot as he lostthe weekend Basel final to JuanDel Potro and then withdrewfrom Paris with niggling injuries.

Djokovic started the year bydefending his Australian Opentitle and boasts a circuit-leading

70-11 match record going intoParis.

With the race for the final twospots in the year-end event goingdown to the wire in Paris beforeMonday’s start of the eight-manwrap-up, injury retirements fig-ure in the equation as well.

In Valencia a week ago,London contenders Jo-WilfriedTsonga and Janko Tipsarevicboth quit first-round matches inpain.

Murray said that with theLondon season-ender startingnext Monday without a gapbetween the end of Paris and thefirst round-robin match in theBritish capital, players areunlikely to be willing to riskplaying three weeks in succes-sion. That was not the case untilthis year, when the ATPsqueezed an extra two weeks ofplay out of the calendar, yieldingan ending on November 12.

NEW DELHI: Ferrari team chiefStefano Domenicali admittedthat title-chasing Spaniard Fern -ando Alonso does not have thefastest car as he urged a concert-ed push for victory in the seaso -n’s final three Formula One races.

Speaking after SebastianVettel’s fourth consecutive win inSunday’s Indian Grand PrixDomenicali said there was nopoint “crying about Red Bull’scar” and that Ferrari had to playto their strengths to close the 13-point gap in the drivers’ stand-ings.

“It is clear at the moment thatRed Bull has a better car,” saidDomenicali. “But what can wesay? We cannot cry. We need towork hard. Full stop.

“By saying that they arestronger, we don’t have tochange the approach we keep in-house. I have said to my team,‘listen, in 1982 at the World Cupof football, our team (Italy) wasnot the strongest, but we won thetitle’.

“We have the luxury of hav-ing Fernando with us, who is thenumber one driver, so it is some-

thing we will do and fight upuntil the end.”

Two-time world championAlonso, bidding to stopGermany’s Vettel, 25, becomingthe youngest triple champion inthe sport’s history, has declaredhe remains “100 per cent con-vinced” that he will win the title.

Asked about the optimismshown by Alonso, who finishedsecond in India, Domenicali said:

“I am always optimistic. In life itdoesn’t change to be negative, itdoesn’t give you points. If youhave the right approach with theguys, we can maximise what wehave. This is what I have told mypeople. When you are fightingyou have to be brave to use thethings you have in the best wayyou can. There are also the otherswho are fighting, and we have torespect them. But their life will

not be easy until the end.”Domenicali avoided making

any claims about the potential ofthe team’s forthcoming upgradesfor their car for the final threeraces. He said all that matteredwas what happened on the track.

“If I say something it doesn’tchange what we can do,” he said.“What I say to my people is try todo the best and we see if what wecan do is enough.”

MILAN: Juventus will aim tomake it 49 matches unbeatenwhen they host Bologna onWednesday, while followers ofSerie A will hope there is norepeat of the refereeing contro-

versies which marred some wee -kend matches. Juventus werebeneficiaries of at least onewrong refereeing decisionSunday, defeating Catania 1-0 tomaintain a three-point lead overNapoli despite their hosts havinga valid goal disallowed for aninexistent offside.

Catania have not been theonly team complaining of incon-sistency, but since then the focushas been on Juve.

Juventus director generalBeppe Marotta on Monday wasforced to "categorically reject" allnotions of a conspiracy revolvinground the Old Lady of Turin.

However it is only now thatItaly's most titled Serie A club isfinding redemption, severalyears after a 'calciopoli' match-fixing scandal saw Juventusstripped of two league titles(2005 and 2006).

Catania president AntoninoPulvirenti, who was ordered offthe bench on Sunday, later com-plained that protests from theJuve bench had forced the matchreferee to change his mind anddisallow the goal.

Claims that the linesman incharge was a fan of Juve havesince been made, and denied, however the events have raisedquestions over the professional-ism of officials in one of theworld's top leagues.

SEOUL: Ulsan Hyundai willtake nothing for granted inWednesday's AFC ChampionsLeague semi-final return leg, despite a handy lead over Bun -yodkor, after a bitter exit thelast time they were in this posi-tion. After last week's 3-1 winin Tashkent, the South Koreanside are favourites to reachtheir first Asian club final andset up a showdown with oneof two teams from SaudiArabia's Jeddah — two-timewinners Al Ittihad, or Al Ahli.

While Ulsan haven't won insix K-League games, they areon a seven-match hot streak inAsian competition and in lineto become the fourth Koreanclub in four years to reach theChampions League final.

Last week they came backfrom a goal down againstUzbek champions Bunyodkorat Jar Stadium, thanks to goalsby Brazilian forward Rafinhaand South Korean internation-als Kim Shin-Wook and Lee

Keun-Ho. But Kim Ho-Gon'steam are unlikely to take thingseasy in front of their home fansafter their heartbreak of 2006,when they beat JeonbukMotors 3-2 away but weretrounced 4-1 at home by theirK-League rivals in the secondleg. The current team is verydifferent from the squad of2006 with defensive midfielderKim Young-Sam the only sur-vivor of that campaign.

While the 2006 team waslargely inspired by the mercuri-al Lee Chun-Soo, the currentside have numerous threatswith the pace of wingers LeeKeun-Ho and Kim Seung-Young, the fine-finishingRafinha and giant forward KimShin-Wook.

Rafinha has been a revela-tion since joining Ulsan fromJapanese side Gamba Osaka, scoring four in their last threeChampions League gamesincluding two in the 4-0 quar-ter-final win over Al Hilal. AFP
