How We Listened to MusicSome of the earliest recorded

memories of life in Poway refer to friends and neighbors getting together, usually at IOGT hall, to enjoy an evening’s musical entertainment.

The enjoyment of music by Powegians (and others) certainly hasn’t lessened over the years. How we experience it, though, certainly has.

Displays around the main exhibit area showcase the ways music has been transmitted and consumed from the days of the early settlers until the year 2000.

On-site instrumental and vocal musical performances long were generally the only option. A music box could certainly play a brief and repetitive tune.

This began to change with the invention of the player piano, like the one on display, The paper rolls could offer a convincing imitation of

Our displays move through the years with the earliest Victrola record players and primitive radios masquerading as furniture, through portable record players and radios, and a variety of musical options featuring tapes and discs.

Young visitors will be amazed at what “recorded” music used to be while those who are a bit older can enjoy memories of music of their youth.

Rummage Sale” by the museum.Coming in August will be our

annual membership meeting and luncheon. Scheduled for Sunday, August 13, the event will take place in Templar’s Hall. There will be a fixed-price luncheon, a brief meeting and a chance to socialize and learn more about Poway’s history. Members, guests and prospective members are welcome to attend.

The previous week, our docents and other volunteers, who contribute their time, enthusiasm and talents over the years will be guests at the City of Poway’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic here in the park.

Meanwhile, we’ll be forging ahead, always looking for Mr. Ford’s “remedies.”

Do you recall how our valley conducts the ocean breezes in

the summer months?I recall, when in elementary and

high school, feeling the summer heat early in the day and , just when it became stifling, the sea breeze starting to make its way through Poway Valley.

It was explained to me, by a source I can’t recall, that, when the desert floors heated east of the mountains, the hot air would rise up, pulling cooler breeze from the sea to be drawn into the vacuum — with Poway Valley as its corridor.

It’s one of Mother Nature’s balancing acts. The same holds true beyond “natural phenomena.” As Henry Ford was quoted as saying, “Don’t find fault, find a remedy.”

The natural balance, and Ford’s quote, reminds me of the people with whom I work at our society.

It’s such a treat to work with, and among, people being drawn into a “vacuum” and looking for a remedy. From modest starts can come fantastic feats on behalf of our community and our visitors.

Our second annual “Victorian Day in the Garden” took place on Saturday, April 8. Our society grossed approximately $2,600 from this well-attended and much-enjoyed event. Thanks and congratulations to all who took part. Cindy Larson, who envisioned the event last year chaired again. She was an amazing source of energy, innovation and composure, pulling together a very complex event. While a lesser person might still be sitting back to soak in the praise, Cindy is already hard at work planning next year’s version.

You will want to mark your calendars for the annual “Old Fashioned Fourth of July” celebration here at Old Poway Park. You’ll find a flyer with complete details about the event in this newsletter. The Museum and Nelson House will both be open during the celebration and plans are in the work for a sizzling “Fire Cracker

PHMS Annual Meeting Set for Sunday, August 13

Last year PHMS brought back an old tradition of including

a luncheon with our annual meeting.

The turnout for the meeting exceeded our modest expectations, leaving us with an overcrowed and noisy room at the Hamburger Factory.

We adjourned after lunch to the main museum.

This year, were stepping up a notch. On Sunday, August 13, we’ll be enjoying lunch and the meeting itself in Templars Hall.

We’ll be offering a fixed-rice menu of several salad and sandwich choices, including a non-alcoholic beverage.

You’ll be able to order off the menu at the event, but advance registration would be appreciated.

Following lunch we’ll have a short (we promise!) business meeting followed by a presentation about Poway’s history and a time to

socialize.Sadly, because of the passing

of board member Ron Thiele, we’ll be electing someone to fill the remaining year of his term.

If you’re a member who would like to serve on the board, we’d

definitely love to hear from you.Details, including menu offerings and prices, are still being finalized and will be updated at the museum

and on our Facebook and Web pages.

You’ll be able to RSVP at the museum, by phone or email or online.

The museum and Nelson House are closed on the second Sunday of each month, but we’ll open up for members and guests who haven’t had a chance to visit recently.

While the meeting part of the event is for members, guests and prospective members are

more than welcome to attend. If you want to be sure we

keep you up to date, leave a voice mail at 858-679-8587 or email us at [email protected]. (We’re building an email list to better stay in touch.)

Military Salute and Baseball featured at museum

Poway Historical Society’s annual salute to the men

and women of the U.S. armed forces is on display at the museum.

Featrured exhibits include flags and hats for our military branches along with uniforms and other memorabilia.

This is always a popular exhibit.

New this year is a nod to baseball’s “Boys of Summer.” Baseball has always been popular here and on view will be pictures of Poway teams dating back to the late 19th century as well as vintage

equipment used by players.Highlighted is an array honoring

Poway’s own Tony Gwynn, on loan from Marlene Rauch.

Tony, much loved and gone way too soon, was recently celebrated

with the unveiling of a statue of him at Lake Poway Park. the event

A ‘Victorian’ Time was had by all!Kudos to Cindy Larson (in blue Victorian

There were plants and costumes and crafter and vendors and musicians. Even lessons about bats.
