THE ENERGY ACADEMY: AFRICA POWER SYSTEM OPERATION: THE FUNDAMENTALS

The Energy Academy Africa is a training initiative developed by two international energy consultancy and training businesses with over thirty years of combined energy market experience between them. PPA Energy and MJMEnergy have formed a new business to specifically deliver world-class training on the commercial, technical and operational aspects of gas and power in Africa. This will be achieved through high quality multi-disciplinary teams made up of a combination of local and international energy experts.

Neil Pinto, PPA EnergyNeil Pinto has more than thirty years’ international experience of work in the power sector. He has been resident in Africa and has an excellent appreciation of the specific problems of the power sector in the region. He has run a number of training courses on electricity planning subjects for utilities, electricity regulators, funding agencies and oil majors. Neil specialises in techno-economic analysis of the power sector.

Dr Graeme Chown, PPA EnergyResident in South Africa, Graeme is an expert in system operations, frequency control, generator control, ancillary services and markets. He spent eighteen years as a senior expert in Eskom prior to joining PPA Energy, and is an internationally recognised expert in system operations. He has run training on these subjects in a range of other African countries, including Tanzania, Malawi, Mauritius and Namibia.

Mike Madden, MJMEnergyAs both a chartered gas and mechanical engineer with over thirty years’ experience, Mike combines an in-depth understanding of the technical aspects of gas transmission and distribution with a detailed knowledge of commercial structures and gas contracts. He initially gained his experience as an operational engineer at British Gas, followed by extensive experience as commercial negotiator where he was involved in the development of the competitive gas market in Great Britain. Since forming MJMEnergy Mike and his colleagues have worked in over forty countries throughout the world advising clients spanning the entire gas chain.

Don Webster, PPA EnergyDon has over thirty-five years’ experience in the power sector covering economic and financial appraisal of projects, financial analysis, market analysis, strategy & business planning, energy policy formulation, hydropower planning, civil engineering design and project management. He has undertaken a wide range of projects in Africa and worldwide, focusing on institutional development for power utilities.

Nick White, MJMEnergyNick has advised companies on diverse areas of energy market development and regularly writes, develops and presents training courses. Key areas of expertise include energy market liberalisation, regulation and transportation charging, third party access to transportation networks, market design and corporate restructuring, energy trading, and gas and power convergence.

Lovemore Chilimanzi, Guest LecturerLovemore is a power system operations specialist with more than twenty years’ experience at senior management positions in Zimbabwe and Botswana. He is a founder member of the Southern African Power Pool interconnected operations. He is well experienced in power system primary and secondary responses and control; power pooling and economic dispatch; disturbance investigations and analysis; power purchase agreements; co-operative and competitive market operations. Lovemore is a well respected interconnected system operations specialist and he lectures Operations Management at MBA level.

Course Locations: Carefully selected locations for the course include The Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre in Lusaka, Zambia, and The Eskom Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa.The Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre was established in 1989 to provide competitive specialised training in hydropower to electricity utilities in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Sub-Saharan Regions. Since then the centre’s scope has expanded into a range of related training in the power sector, including training in power system operations and maintenance. The Eskom Convention Centre was opened to the general public as a Convention Centre and its diverse facilities, with accommodation, has made it a popular venue for local and international guests alike. Originally built on a farm in the tranquillity of the semi-rural highveld, Eskom Convention Centre provides a friendly ambience, superior service and outstanding venues, where clients and their guests can feel right at home.
