• Since its inception PowerWorld has focused on making power system analysis, design and operation as easy as possible– And providing great customer service!– Power systems are not “easy” and seem to be getting more complex so good software is crucial!

The PowerWorld Philosophy

• Since about 2007 PowerWorld Simulator has had functionality for what we call Geographic Data Views (GDVs) with the original functionality described in the following papers:– T.J. Overbye, E.M. Geographic Data Views (GDVs) Overview


• Idea of GDVs is for cases with geographic information for the buses (or substations), the power system information can be visualized on auto‐created one‐lines– Did not get widely adopted initially because at the time few cases had the necessary geographic information

– That has changed, partially driven by GMD work, so PowerWorld is refreshing the concept

GDVs Overview


• Starting point is a case with latitude/longitude values, and a map‐based (often empty) one‐line– Can be provided by PowerWorld

• From a case information display with geo‐linked objects, like substations, select the field of interest, and then select Geographic Data View

• This displays the Geographic Data View Customization Display– Used to specify attributes for the auto‐inserted GDVs

• The GDV data view dialogappears; this provides lotsof options for customizingthe GDV appearance– Select Create Geo Data View Display and Close Dialog

Wide‐Area Visualization using GDVsImage shows power flow results of the load (white) and the generation (magenta). It was created quickly by combining bus and generator GDVS, then contouring the bus load.


• Spark‐lines (from E. Tufte, Beautiful Evidence, 2006) are “intense, word‐sized graphics”– Can be thought of as line graphs in which the variables names and scales are assumed (not shown)

– Goal is to allow graphs to be anywhere a number or word could be used

• Sparklines can now be added to PowerWorldGDVs, but they do require time‐varying data– presently from the transient stability or GMD analysis

• Sparklines can be includedin a GDV similar to theinclusion of other info.

• The only difference isthere must be a set ofdata to show– Currently the only typesof data supported aretransient stability resultsand GIC angle variation

• Sparklines are designedto compliment ratherthan replace graphs

• Goal is to provide overview visualizationswith easy access toassociated information,such as the scale valuesand actual data

Sparkline Usage


• You can add LOTS of sparklines to a display, but that might be counter productive; filtering can be used to select which values to show

• The transient stability contour toolbar allows for the rapid creation of a time‐sequenced onelinecontours of transient stability results– Can leverage displays created with GDVs

• These displays can then be made into a movie by either– Capturing the screen as the contours are creating using screen recording software such as Camtasia

– Or having Simulator automatically store the contour images as jpegs and then creating a movie using software such as Microsoft Movie Maker

• The contour toolbar uses stored transient stability results, and hence it is used only after the transient stability solution has finished– It can be used with results that are either saved RAM or saved to the hard drive

• It requires having a oneline with objects associated with the desired results (such as buses, generators, substations, etc)– Again these can be auto‐created with GDVs

• The contour toolbar is shown by either– Selecting Add‐ons, Stability Case Info, Show Transient Contour Toolbar

– On the Transient Stability Analysis Form select the Show Transient Contour Toolbar button at the bottom of the form

• The toolbar is only fully enabled if there are transient stability results to contour

Contour Toolbar Location The Device Type Field is Always Enabled


• The toolbar has several fields and buttons

– Increment tells the time in seconds between subsequent contours

• It is auto‐set based on how often the results are stored; e.g., with a ¼ cycle (60 Hz) time step, storing the results every 1/12 time step gives results even 0.05 seconds; it can be manually changed, usually to a higher value

– Present Time is the current time being contoured• Entering a value to contour results for a specific time

Contour Toolbar Buttons and Fields


– Start and End give the starting and ending times for the contour sequence; they are auto‐set based on the simulation but can be changed.

– The red circle x at the left is used to close the toolbar– The next five buttons are used respectively to 1) reset to the start time, 2) go back one time increment, 3) automatically play, sequentially advancing by one time increment, 4) advance one time increment and 5) pause the automatic play



– Device Type is used to specify the object type to contour; objects of this type must be present on the oneline

– Field is used to specify the specific field from the device type to contour; the data for this field type must have been saved when the transient stability was solved



• The Optionsmenu is used to specify three different options– Contour Options is used to display the Contour Options dialog; it must be used to specify the contouring options, including the maximum/nominal/minimum values

• When the Contour Options dialog is shown the Contour Type and Value fields are disabled since these values are specified on the toolbar

• Other options can be set to customize the contour

– Export is used to display the TS Contour Export Options dialog, which provides the option of saving the contours as jpeg format files

• The JPEG Base File Name Options is used to specify the first part of the file name– The Base File Namefield is enterablewhen the Name option is “Custom”

• Since lots of filescan be created it isoften good to put thefiles in a subdirectory

• The Value Meaning option is used to indicate which values will actually be contoured– Actual Value: Good for things like frequency– Percent of Initial: Contours the percent of the initial value; useful for values with widely different initial values, like generator MW outputs

– Deviation from Initial: Contours the deviation from the initial; good for voltages

– Percent Deviation: Percentage deviation

• Contour limits should be set appropriately



• A typical way to use the contour tool bar is to 1. Solved the desired transient stability contingency,

making sure to save the associated contour fields2. Display the toolbar3. Set the options4. Select the play button which will automatically

create the sequence of contours• Contours can be saved with either screen recording

software or as a series of jpegs

• There is a wide variety of software available to create a movie from a series of jpegs; next slides give quick example using Microsoft Movie Maker– This software is free. Microsoft says it is not supported under Windows 10, but it still can be downloaded and seems to work

– Other third party packages could be used

Creating Movies with Microsoft Movie Maker


• To get the jpegs into Movie Maker1. Start Movie Maker2. Open a window showing

the location of the PowerWorld jpegs

3. Drag them all into the Movie Maker right panel

• Images will be ordered by their time suffix• If desired add a title slide jpeg



• To set the duration for each image, select the desired images, select Edit, then enter the duration in seconds (e.g. 0.15 for 1/3 real‐time playback when saving every 0.05 seconds)

• PowerWorld now allows transient stability results to be quickly saved in Comtrade Format, which is given by IEEE Std. C37.111– Both the 1991, 1999 and 2013 formats are supported; data can be exported in 1991 ASCII (for compatibility), 1999 BINARY (for small size) or 2013 FLOAT32 single file format (*.cff)

• Exported data is determined is specified by defining transient stability plots

• To do this– First, define a plot with the data to be saved– Second, do a transient stability run– Third, on the Plot Designer left click on Show/Save Selected Plot Data and selected the desired format
