BRIEF INTRODUCTION

A water bicycle is a modification made over the normal cycle which can be used to propagate through water. The water bicycle works on the principle of Archimedes principle. A simple bicycle can be made into water bicycle in many simple and easy ways, using some very common materials of daily use.

The name itself speaks of the entire project, unlike the usually available water bikes, this model can be used with great ease in water and can run normally on roads with very few assembling and dismantling operations.

PROBLEMS LEADING TOTHIS IDEA

Many regions in our state, and even all over the country face the problem of floods and during floods get completely isolated from the normal life. All kinds of transportation fail and people strive even for the basic needs of life. Boats serve the primary function of carrying people but it is not necessary that boats are available in vicinity everywhere.

All the roads are filled with flood water, stopping the supply of food, medicines and other necessities. The supplies provided by government becomes the only source of dependence for the people.

SCOPE OF USE

Unlike most of the similar products available in the market, which are high in cost, complex in fabrication and cannot be easily afforded, the model fabricated by us in our project is an easy-to-go, both in terms of price and fabrication. It is designed keeping in mind the area of use i.e. the flood prone villages in our state and the rest of the country. The materials and methods used are such that they are very easily available readily. Since a bicycle is a common sight in villages hence it is most effective to use it as a transport means during floods, when the flood water makes all other means of transport and communication useless,

ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE

Archimedes principle indicates that the upward buoyant force that is exerted on the body immersed in water, whether fully or partially, is equal to the weight of the water the body displaces

The amphibious bicycle floats using the same principle, thus the floating arrangements have to made keeping in mind the amount of load that has to be carried on it. If the load is more than the estimated value, the entire setup can fail and thus sink.

CONCEPTS DEVOLEPED

CONCEPT 1 FOR FLOATING [Using tyre tubes of appropriate sizes ] :- it is a concept based on using tyre tubes of appropriate sizes to float the bicycle

CONCEPT 2 FOR FLOATING [Using oil tin cans]:- in this concept we tried to keep bicycle afloat in water using oil tin cans

CONCEPT FOR PROPELLING:- the bicycle is propelled using fins made of steel attached to the rear wheel

CONCEPT FOR FLOATING

Page 11: ppt project

DESCRIPTION OF CONCEPT

In this concept we have tried to keep the bicycle afloat in water and balance it to ensure smooth and safe propagation through water. Tubes of appropriate size are taken and arranged in different combinations to figure out the most efficient combination.

The bicycle is propelled in forward direction using ‘fins’. These fins are attached on the rear wheel of the bicycle in accordance with the respective floating arrangements used.

CONCEPTS FOR PROPELLING

FABRICATION PROCESSES USED

Mostly the fabrication processes which will be used to assemble this amphibious bicycle are very simple and cheap. These involve some simple processes like:-

a) Nut-bolt jointsb) Screw jointsc) Some other simple ways of joining the

accessories to the bicycle are usedd) Welding, metal cutting, metal bending,

drilling etc.

PROLEMS FACED The major problem of this model is

that it cannot work in flowing waterProblems for giving support to frames

to resist upward force of water The cycle cannot run on roads properly

with the frames attached to it The speed of movement is not the

same as on roads The turning of bicycle in water is not

easy The braking operation in this model is

still complex and different methods are being studied and tried to overcome it

Page 26: ppt project

MERITS OF OUR MODEL

As compared to market existing products, our model is very much cheaper and efficient equally

All the materials used are easily available in rural households and thus can be used to assemble quickly in times of urgency.

It can be used both on road as well as in water thus serving dual purpose.

Minimum complexity, the whole assembly uses ‘4’nuts and ‘8’ simple screws which are easy to attach and remove the frames to the bicycle

Page 27: ppt project

FUTURE SCOPE In future there is a possibility that this

design can be modified with some more technical aspects being added it. Some of the feasible modifications are :-

o It can be propelled using a motor of suitable Horsepower.

o It can be used with suitable arrangements to carry patients in case of emergency.

o Provisions can be made to make the entire arrangement portable and easy to carry.

CONCLUSION

The entire project has been focused to make a water bicycle such that it can be used readily and feasibly. The major part which led to the development of this idea was the thought to make a transport for the flood prone areas of our state. Various concepts and ideas and wise guidance from our respected H.O.D sir, Prof. PANKAJ AGRAWAL has made it possible for us to design this amphibious bicycle.

A thought to make something innovative out of nothing without much complexity and of great use in times of need paved a path to this idea , theoretical analysis completed the live model has been made with almost all the objectives being fulfilled by the primary model.
