BOTTLENECKS
WHAT IS A BOTTLENECK?
Performance an entire system is limited by a single or limited number of components.
The term is taken from its literal meaning.
Fundamental intuition about bottlenecks carried over from the days of Henry Ford.

MANUFACTURING BOTTLENECKS
It is a stage in a process that causes the entire process to slow down.
Restricts the output of production facilities.

CAUSES OF MANUFACTURING BOTTLENECKS
PHYSICAL
• Equipment breakdown• Inherent equipment
capacity limitations
HUMAN
• Poor training and skill levels
• Technical support problems
LATENT • Inappropriate scheduling
MANAGING BOTTLENECK
In 1984 Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt introduced the Theory of Constraints in his book the Goal. The Five Focusing Steps :
Identify the process' constraints
Decide how best to exploit the process constraints
Subordinate everything else to the above decisions
Evaluate the process constraint
Remove the constraint and re-evaluate the process
MANAGING BOTTLENECK
Identify the Bottleneck Finding Largest WIP Inventory.
Exploit the Bottleneck Optimize bottleneck machine speed. Give maintenance high priority.
5 Focusing Steps :
Subordinate Other TasksLetting the non-bottlenecks help the bottleneckEverybody works at the pace of the bottleneck
Elevate the BottleneckAdding more people or machinesTraining and mentoring more operators for the
bottleneck
Re-evaluate the processNew Bottleneck EmergesRepeat the Steps and continue improving the
system.

Communication gap as a bottleneck
POPULATION BOTTLENECKS
It is an event that drastically reduces the size of a population.
It produces a decrease in the gene pool of the population.
