God is love

By Pastor Daniel Lee

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Cor. 13:7)

Today is Valentine’s day where love is being expressed in gifts, hugs, kisses, letters, social media, messengers or romantic dinners.

One version of the story of Valentine's Day told that Claudius II, nicknamed Claudius the Cruel, because of his harsh leadership and his tendency for getting into wars, cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome in order to recruit more men into his army. Thousands of couples saw their hopes of matrimony dashed by the single act of a tyrant. And no one seemed courageous enough in standing up to the emperor. But a simple Christian priest named Valentine did come forward and stood up for love. He began to secretly marry soldiers before they went off to war, despite the emperor’s orders. When Emperor Claudius found out about the secret ceremonies he had Valentine thrown into prison and deemed that he would be put to death.

Another version told that Valentine was a Christian doctor who went about doing good deeds wherever he could. He became a good friend and helper to the Christians, who were being persecuted by the cruel powers of the Roman Empire. It is believed that the good doctor was eventually imprisoned because of his loyalty to his fellow “followers of the Way.” After he was beheaded on February 14, that day was observed each year in Valentine’s honour by the early Christians.

As time went on, however, Valentine and his deeds of kindness were forgotten. Because February was near the beginning of spring, with its feelings of romance, the day became a secular holiday celebrating romantic love. Tokens of love and affection were given to sweethearts and friends, starting the custom that we still practice today.

Both stories showed that Valentine’s sacrificial love for others sprang from his deep love for Christ. We too can express our love for the Savior with these simply stated yet profound words … “but how much I love Thee my actions will show.”

1 John 4:7-12 tells us about the origin of love that is from God because God is love.

Hence, the love of God was made manifest among us when our heavenly Father sent his only begotten Son into the world that we might live through him and experience His gracious love for us so that His love is perfected in us. In God’s love we learn to love others because “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Cor. 13:7)

On this special day dedicated to expressions of love, we can make it truly a “holy day” with our love for Christ and by sharing His love and concern for others. For God expects the Church and each of His children to be carriers of His love to the World.

We must strive to be an example of that same love to a lost and dying world as Matthew Henry stated, “As the Father loved Christ, who was most worthy, so he loved his disciples, who were unworthy. All that love the Savior should continue in their love to him, and take all occasions to show it...Christ’s love to us should direct us to love each other.”

May the Lord help each of us to spread His message of love around the world until He comes.

Blessed Valentine’s Day.
