ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fear Not By Ps Daniel Lee

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

- Isaiah 41:10 As young kids, we did many things for the first time and a lot of them involved overcoming fear, like learning how to swim or ride a bicycle. When we grew a little older, asking a girl or boy out for the first time seemed to be a scary endeavour for most of us. Then later in life, we might have experienced the transitional fear of being away from our family due to studying abroad, being enlisted into national service or joining the workforce for the first time. These were all transitional points in life, requiring us to transit from one stage of life to the next. The things that concerned us and made us a little afraid were mainly our first encounter. Overcoming our fears could lead us to new understanding, an ability to face bigger challenges with determination and a confidence in what we can achieve or, at some stage, might be capable of achieving. Fear can make us act irrationally. Fear can also be a stumbling block that keeps us from effectively serving the Lord, and the messes these fears get us into are often worse than what we were afraid of in the first place. There is a story of a man who burned his house down to kill a spider. Being afraid of spiders, he spotted one in the laundry room of his West Seattle home. In order to get rid of it, he grabbed a lighter and a can of spray paint. Not only did this combination of ammunition he got turn the spider into ashes, he also set the house on fire, causing about $60,000 worth of damage. That is a lot to get rid of one spider or dispel one’s fear. Being confident of God’s protection and deliverance have dispelled all fear in Elisha in the face of overwhelming threat from the enemy of Israel (2 Kings 6:15-16). In other words, fear was transformed into faith. The only reason for such boldness was the indwelling presence of God. So what about you? What do you fear? Fear will prevent us from experiencing God's plan for our lives. Fear inhibits the heart, but faith strengthens it. Faith allows us to move into uncharted territory with full confidence that God is with us. Fear will also prevent us from experiencing once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and can steal the joy and peace Christ has offered us. There is only one thing we need to fear: God. Proverbs 111:10 and 19:23 tell us that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” and “the fear of the Lord leads to life.” Each time we encounter a particular fear, whether it is inadequacy, the unknown or change, we need to immediately turn to God in faith to seek His will, His encouragement and His strength, lest we miss out on what God has in store for us by allowing our fear to win over our faith.
