28th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 15, 2017 In the Gospel for today we hear proclaimed; many are called, few are chosen. Have you been called? What does it mean to be called? Can one be called more than once? Should once be enough? The Gospel story relates a king and a banquet and people refusing to come to the banquet even when they have received an invita on (call). The king wants the banquet hall to be full. He tells his servants to invite anyone and everyone they can. The banquet hall becomes full and the king, upon arriving, no ces someone not dressed for the banquet. He asks this person why he does not have on a wedding garment and there is silence. No answer is given. The man is bound and cast outside. Why does the man not have on a wedding garment? He was invited and entered the banquet, but not properly a red. This calls to my mind the parable of the seed cast on the ground. Some falls on good ground, some on rocky ground, some grows a li le and then withers and dies. The seed is the word of God, we are told, and it is proclaimed to all regardless of their ability to hear and respond. All are called to the banquet. Some have very good reasons to not come. At least good reasons according to their thinking, but maybe not according to God. Some hear God’s word or call and ignore it and others are able to listen, but the word does not take root, even a li le. These people are not able to respond to the call. So, have you been called? I bet we all have been called and probably more mes than we can count. We are sheep remember. We need a shepherd and we need to be listening to hear the call of the shepherd. “I know mine and mine know me.” What if we do not know the shepherd? What if we do not hear the call of the shepherd? Has there ever been a me in my life when I ignored someone speaking to me, or did not hear them because I was too busy with something else? Have I deliberately ignored someone? Most of us can answer yes to those ques ons. Have I ignored the call to regular encounters with the Lord? Have I refused to join with my brothers and sisters in service? Do I wear my wedding garment or have I forgo en it in the closet or in the car or did I lose it and not bother to go and look for it? Have I been called to the banquet? Am I the one whom the king approaches and asks why I am not dressed properly? Does any of this make sense? Do you get the message of the Gospel? May we all be wearing our wedding garment and being ready when the Lord comes when we least expect. May our lamps be lighted and may we be ready to join in the heavenly banquet of the Lord. Amen. Blessings, Ken Swinson, Director of Worship.
