PRE PRODUCTION UNDERSTANDING

Page 2: pre production

Story Board •  Story boards are a way of recording initial idea’s in brief or full detail. These documents include

some visual stimulus for a visual representation into what will happen, shot types, dialog and anything specific that needed to be noted

•  This helps the director get the details of the shoot correct and can also be useful for getting ideas across to the actors

•  This document is very useful for the camera crew to ensure they get what is required for each scene or for that individual shot

Gantt Chart/ Schedule • This chart is a schedule and a approximated timeline that

should be used to keep the production organized.

• This table is a document that contains tasks such as shooting days, assessment logs and other forms of tasks associated with this production

•  I found that using the Gantt chart did help because it helped me plan my production and ensure everything that I needed to complete before the deadline was done

Page 4: pre production

Proposal • A proposal is a offer from a seller to a prospective buyer

and in this instance it was my chosen brand. Proposals are often a crucial stage in the complicated process.

Page 5: pre production

Script A script is a written form of dialog and what the narrative will be. This document is very useful for the actors or anyone involved as well as myself so I know during the filming what needs to be filmed.

Page 6: pre production

Shot List • This list helps in the planning and filming of your movie by

providing a documentation describing in brief detail what needs to be shot during the production

• This document was very helpful during the filming process because I had a written documentation of what needed to be included or filmed to ensure I didn't’t miss anything invaluable to the production

Page 7: pre production

Shooting Script •  This document is a written form of

screenplay that will be used during the production of my shoot.

•  This record is a specific script showing all the camera angles that will be used in the final edit.

•  This document was very useful before and during my shoot. When I 1st thought of the idea I needed to write down everything about the thought before I forgot it and during the shoot I could give these to those involved in the shoot so they know what needs to be filmed

Page 8: pre production

Risk Assessment •  This document is essential

before shooting at the scene. This document includes possible risks, hazards and dangerous worst case sceneries

•  On this document you record each possible hazards and grade each one but also if it did happen what would be done (phone emergency services)

•  This document is useful for allowing preparation and letting myself and the staff on the scene know what the risks are but more importantly what to do if it did happen

Page 9: pre production

Location Recce • This document is used to describe and give a brief of what

will happen during the scenes in that location.

• This document is very helpful and useful for explaining what you need your actors to do and where it will be shot. Its another medium to help clarify that the actors are informed of what they are required to do

Page 10: pre production

Over Head Diagram •  This document is a birds eye view map of the location with all the

shooting action placed on the map.

•  This diagram is useful both for myself and those helping in this production. It helps get my idea’s about what I want during the production across much easier instead of explaining it to each individual they have something to look at and refer to.

Call Sheet •  This document is issued to everyone

involved in the filming. All the information is collected everyday because call sheets are given each day of filming. All information is covered such as address, phone number(s) etc.

•  This information is used to ensure the staff present are up to date with the information or be updated of any changes. The information is relayed between the actors and the crew so they can exchange information before the days of the shoot such as weather changes or cancelation of shoots

•  This document is very useful because it started a communication circle between my actors and my staff; they kept each other up to date about the shoot and if any changes was to happen they could be informed

Page 12: pre production

Contact Details •  This document included the contact

information of everyone involved in the production. These details could include emails, phone numbers or addresses

•  This information is useful incase you have to contact a member of the production. Having this information easily accessible will help the process of getting information from one individual to another much easier.

•  This document was very beneficial within the production, one of my actors was unavailable for the production day so my actor being able to inform and notify me on the situation and change the date to something more suitable

Page 13: pre production

Budget •  This document is used for planning

how much is necessary for the production. This gives a budget that the production team will have to keep in mind and try not to go over budget and not affect the profit

•  This document credits for the cost of props, equipment, actors and the production crew

•  This budget is required to keep track of the expenses and to calculate how much money would be required to see the production through

Page 14: pre production

Release Agreement •  Before I could use any of the

footage I needed the permission my actors or anyone present at the scene

•  I needed them to sign and agree to the terms and conditions of the document and once signed the footage belongs to the production company

•  If any of my actors didn't’t agree to the form then they could not be involved in my production and any footage taken with them in it could not be used

Page 15: pre production

Location Release •  Before shooting on any area you

have to ensure you are in legal rights to, this is either acquired by a permit or a form giving you to film on the area for how ever long the owner agrees too. If they don’t agree or not notified then its classed as trespassing and could lead into a fine or an arrest

•  This document is essential for any production, without me getting this release document the recording I done would have been illegal and could jeopardize

Page 16: pre production

Footage Log •  All information about the edit is on

this document making it easy to track changes to the edit.

•  The description allows me to make a short description on the changes to the edit. This information is most valuable to the editor making it easier for the individual to track what effects or changes

•  This document is quite useful to the whole production team as well as the editor because the team could track and monitor what the editor has done and may offer suggestions or offer to shoot more footage

Page 17: pre production

Asset Log •  An asset log is used to keep details

on anything used during the pre and post production. This also lets you know where all the items you may need is stored.

•  The sources in the asset log will help when researching the copyright of the material. This is crucial and a required document under copyright, design and patents act 1988

•  I found this very useful when in post production because it helped me find items that I needed instead of me trying to filter through folders there were links in the asset log that I can use to track down the materials

Page 18: pre production

EDL •  An Edit Decision List (EDL) is a

document used during the post-production process whilst editing. This document includes a list with time codes that represent where the footage needs to be. This document also includes how it should be edited such as what fades should be used

•  This document was very useful for keeping track of what footage needs to be and what has edited. This document also includes changes to the footage.

Page 19: pre production

Viability study • This case study is used to plan

out what idea’s can be successfully done with the resources I have available. This is very useful because it will ensure I don’t choose an idea that cant be done. This document lets me decide what idea I can use as contingency plans but also a place to display

Page 20: pre production

Research brand/market •  Before any planning for any production research is required. Research is the

priority because information gathered from this allows the production team to base there planning around the information collected.

•  I did market research to collect information about my chosen brands target

audience. An example of this research is the survey I carried out about gamers and if its predominately gender related furthermore if my brand is missing out on a large audience

•  An additional example of research I collected was the production research. This research played a key factor in my production because the results of my examination relayed back to the staff and actors when filming my advert helped the process of the production. An example of this is the combination of my location recce and risk assessment allowed the people participating know the possible hazard

Legal, Ethical and Regulatory issues When making any kind of media product its important to make sure it doesn't’t intervene any legal and ethical regulation. These rules are set up as guide lines so production companies know what can be made to endorse there product or brand. There are companies such as the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) that regulate advertising across all forms of media. These codes are split into two advertising codes:

•  CAP: Non-broadcast advertising, sales promotion and marketing •  BCAP: broadcast advertising, sales promotion and marketing

There are regulations on particular products such as food or drink in addition to film and computer games being certificated by BBFG but these rules do vary so ensuring that the production team keeps checking the regulations to make sure no rules are broken. Ofcom regulates TV, radio as well as mobile phones and all wireless devices
