'Preach the Gospel^ Heal Sick “ Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you freer VOL. II KANSAS CITY, MO., THURSDAY, FEB. 9, 1911 No. 40 Elijah; Defender of the Law Extracts from Mr. Fillmore’s Sunday morning talk in Unity Auditorium, Kansas City, Mo., Feb. 5, 1911. The subject of our study this morning is based on the history of Elijah the prophet. We take all Scripture as representative. There is back of everything that appears something which it represents. This Bible is the best combination of narratives illus- trating Truth that we know. We do not worship it, but reverence it for its wonder- ful inspiration and depth of meaning. In the Scriptures various names are given to God. Sometimes he is called Lord God, and we have thought that Lord God and God were the same; but all these names, while referring to the One Supreme Being, have different shades of meaning. In the beginning of the history of man, as given in Genesis, the Supreme One is called Elohim. This is the great Uni- versal Principle, the One Infinite Mind, the origin of all. Farther along in this history we have Jehovah, the Lord God, I am—that is, God identified. In the English language we have a very limited way of expressing the intricate meaning of words, but back of every He- brew word was a definite meaning. We have lost sight of the inner spiritual mean- ing of names, and children might as well be numbered as named in the way they are. Every name should be characteristic of the individual to whom it is given. In the Scriptures everything represents a type of mind or state of consciousness. Jehovah is I am, Christ Mind, or the Higher Self of every man. We have no history of the Christ as a man. Christ is the Divine Idea of man. The New Testa- ment gives the history of Jesus, the outer manifestation of the Christ, but back of Jesus was the Christ, the Jehovah. When Gen. Lew Wallace was asked to allow “Ben Hur” to be put on the stage he objected, because he did not want any one to make a personal representation of Christ. But he finally consented, making this reservation—that no one should ever take the. part of Christ. His presence was always represented by a shaft of light. All manifestations of the Christ Mind are under Law. The men of science search in the realm of effects for this Law, but they do not find it. When we see in- tellectually certain effects we may know that back of them is a law which can be only spiritually discerned. The idea of chance comes from looking at effects alone and not taking account of the cause side of existence. We may find the law of our members and the law which holds planets in their places, and that which produces the seasons. But we must go to the right source, and that Source is God. God is Spirit, and Spirit is Mind; we shall then find the Law in Mind. All laws may be reduced to the relation of ideas. But some say, “This is too abstract; I want facts.” Not long ago I talked with a doctor, and he claimed that all vou could know of man

Elijah; Defender of the Law

E xtrac ts from M r. F illm ore’s Sunday morning ta lk in U nity A uditorium ,

Kansas C ity , M o., Feb. 5, 1911.

T he sub ject of our study th is m orning is based on the h isto ry of E lija h the prophet. W e take all S crip tu re as represen tative. T here is back of everything th a t appears som ething which it represen ts. This Bible is the best com bination of narra tives illustra tin g T ru th th a t we know. W e do not w orship it, bu t reverence it for its w onderfu l insp ira tion and depth of m eaning.

In the S crip tures various nam es are given to God. Sometimes he is called L o rd God, and we have thought th a t Lord God and God were the sam e; but all these nam es, while re fe rrin g to the One Suprem e Being, have d ifferent shades of meaning. In the beginning of the h isto ry of m an, as given in Genesis, the Suprem e One is called Elohim . T his is the g rea t U niversal P rinc ip le , the One Infinite M ind, the origin of all. F a r th e r along in this history we have Jehovah, the L ord God, I am— th a t is, God identified.

In the E ng lish language we have a very lim ited way of expressing the in tricate m eaning of w ords, bu t back of every H e brew w ord was a definite m eaning. W e have lost sight of the inner sp iritua l m eaning of nam es, and ch ildren m ight as well be num bered as nam ed in the way they are. E very nam e should be characteristic of the individual to whom it is given.

In the S crip tu res everything represents a type of m ind or sta te of consciousness. Jehovah is I am, C hrist M ind, or the H igher S elf of every man. W e have no h isto ry of the C hrist as a man. C hrist is the D ivine Idea of man. T he New T estam ent gives the h isto ry of Jesus, the outer m anifestation of the C hrist, bu t back of Jesus was the C hrist, the Jehovah.

W hen Gen. Lew W allace was asked to allow “ Ben H u r” to be p u t on the stage he objected , because he d id not w ant any one to make a personal represen tation of C hrist. B u t he finally consented, m aking th is reservation— th a t no one should ever take the. p a r t of C hrist. H is presence was always rep resen ted by a shaft of light.

A ll m anifestations of the C hrist M ind are under Law. T he men of science search in the realm of effects for this Law, but they do not find it. W hen we see inte llectually certain effects we may know th a t back of them is a law which can be only sp iritu a lly discerned. T he idea of chance comes from looking at effects alone and not tak ing account of the cause side of existence. W e may find the law of our members and the law which holds planets in th e ir places, and th a t which produces the seasons. B ut we must go to the right source, and th a t Source is God. God is S p irit, and S p irit is M ind ; we shall then find the Law in M ind. A ll laws may be reduced to the rela tion of ideas. B u t some say, “ T his is too ab s trac t; I w ant facts.” N ot long ago I ta lked with a doctor, and he claimed th a t all vou could know of man

was gained from a study of nerves and tissues and cells. H e said th a t all claim s of m ental or sp iritu a l laws come w ithin the realm of theory , w ith which exact science could not deal. I asked him if he could get any idea of the music which a phonograph record could produce, by a cursory examination of the grooves on its surface.

Socrates understood this. H e said men were foolish to try to heal the body w ithout first healing the soul. Soul is mind, and m ind is the source. Soul m akes the body. Soul is cause; body, effect.

E lija h means God rules as I Am, or J e hovah. H e is the defender of the D ivine Law . W hen we perceive the law of S p irit and proclaim it, we are E lija h . L ike Jo h n the B ap tist, he is th e in te llectual perception of T ru th , fo rerunner o f the C hrist M ind. In te llec tual percep tion does not get down into the v ita l centers and lay hold of Substance and L ife , but perceives the possibility. H ere is w here the C hrist M ind is suprem e. E lij ah has a certa in power, bu t it is lim ited.

E lija h was a N az a rite ; th a t is, a child of nature. This indicates th a t we m ust get away from all th a t is artificial and enter into the sim plicity of the n a tu ra l sp iritua l mind. T here is a divine na tu ra l law , and some, having observed th is, te ll us th a t if we keep the laws of natu re we shall be well. B u t they th ink th a t th is keeping of the law is the observance of some ex ternal thing. T his is try in g to find the law of nature in the realm of effects. W e need to know first th a t all laws bave the ir foundation in M ind, and th a t the rig h t observance is a r ig h t relation of thought. E lija h

defends the D ivine Law , and restores the ru le of the L ord God by p u ttin g aw ay all tendency to give pow er to m ateria l things. T his se tting up false gods in ea rth and a ir and w ater is B aal w orship. T his re veals th a t a ll people in any age, who believe in th e pow er of m ateria l th ings, are pagans.

RESPONSIVE SERVICE

Sunday, February 12, 1911

Remove from thee all doubting; and question nothing a t all, when thou asketh any th ing of the L o rd ; say w ithin thyse lf, How shall I be able to ask any th ing of the L ord , and receive it, seeing I have so g rea tly sinned aga inst him?

Do not th ink thus, but tu rn unto the L ord w ith all th y h eart, and ask of him w ithout doubting, and thou shalt know the m ercy of the L o rd ; how th a t he will not forsake thee, but will fulfill the request of thy soul.

W herefore p u rify thy h ea rt from doubting, and p u t on f a i th ; and tru s t in G o d ; and thou sha lt receive all th a t thou shalt ask.

P u t a ll sadness fa r from thee ; for it is the sister of doubting and anger.

B u t the tru e fa s t is th is : Do nothing wickedly in th y life , bu t serve God w ith a pure m in d ; and keep his com mandm ents, and w alk according to his p recep ts, nor suffer any wicked desire to en ter into thy mind.

F irs t of all take heed to thyself and keep thyse lf from every wicked act, and from every filthy w ord, and from every h u rtfu l desire ; and p u rify thy m ind from all the van ity .of th is p resen t world. I f thou shalt observe these th ings, th is fast shall be right.

T hey th a t are of the flesh cannot do the works of the S p ir i t ; neither they th a t are of the S p irit the w orks of th e flesh.

L et no one look upon his neighbor a f te r the flesh; but do ye all m utually love each other in Jesus C hrist.

L et us become sp iritua l, a p erfec t tem ple of God.

B ut the righteous live for everm ore; th e ir rew ard is also w ith the L ord , and the care of them is w ith the M ost H igh.

W isdom is glorious, and never fadeth aw a y ; yea, she is easily seen of them th a t love her, and found of such as seek her.

Whoso w atcheth fo r her shall quickly I be w ithout care.

F o r wisdom is m ore moving than any m otion; she passeth and goeth through all th ings by reason of her pureness.

F or she is the brightness of the everlasting light, the unspotted m irror of the pow er of God, and the im age of his goodness.

O G od of m y fa th e rs , and Lord of j m ercy who has made a ll th ings with thy I w o rd ;

A nd ordained m an th rough thy wisdom, th a t he should have dominion over the creatures which thou hast made.

B ut wisdom delivered from pain those th a t attended upon her.

F or th ine incorrup tib le S p irit is in all things.

F o r to know thee is pe rfec t righteousness ; yea, to know th y pow er is the root of im m ortality.
