Colossians 2:4-7

4 Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words.

5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.

6 As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,

7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

This was a word of the law-courts; it was the word for the persuasive power of a lawyer’s arguments, the kind of persuasive power which could make the worse appear the better reason, and which could enable the criminal to escape the just punishment he should have suffered, the power which could sway an assembly – and sometimes sway it into mistaken ways

The ranks of the Colossians have not been broken; in his letter Paul is not hurrying to the rescue of a congregation that has been thrown into disorder. In Corinth the order has been broken; not so in Colosse. . . He is not hurrying to the rescue of a congregation whose faith has begun to lose its firm stand, has begun to become unsteady. . . Thus far the Colossians have stood in line with all firmness, but, like all errorists, the Judaizers are persistent, and this causes Paul concern for the Colossians, he is thinking of the future days. He is not one who waits until the damage is done; he acts with promptness so that no damage shall ever be done, so that with his help the Colossians shall stand more firmly than ever. That is a far more joyful task than repairing damage after it has been done, especially when such damage might have been prevented by taking proper measure in time. Fortify in advance! is the proper procedure.

“Progress does not consist in dropping the early truths of Jesus Christ the Lord for newer wisdom and more speculative religion, but in discovering ever deeper lessons and larger powers in these rudiments which are likewise the last and highest lessons which men can lean” (235).
