EvaluationEvaluating my Preliminary Task

Page 2: Prelim evaluation

For our preliminary task my team had to work with a tennis racket as our object in a kitchen. Our main story line was of a teenager who had not gone to her tennis lessons and her trainer going to her to make her join tennis. To do this we had to develop our skills to plan, ensure we included specific shots, film it and then edit it. I think we were very successful as we included the criteria we needed to in the film.

What we had to do

Skills attained during this projectI was one of the actresses within the short film but I helped with all the parts of the creation. For example with our storyboard I contributed to where we needed to write what shots and angles to use in each box. Additionally when editing I helped choose which part of each shot we should use and placing them in the correct order to let the story make sense and look as professional as possible. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to have as much time on the camera as I would have liked however I was able to film one bit which helped me improve my filming skills.

Skills attained during this projectI have also learnt that it is very important to storyboard and shot list because without those, even brief, outlines of a plan we would not have known what we would want to film and get done for our film hence making the creation a lot more difficult. But if you have a detailed list/ plan then you can go straight into filming and it can help with handling your time a lot easier and smoother.

What we did wellIn our film we were very successful with the main aim of our film. This was to include specific criteria such as someone walking through a door, sitting down, having a conversation and then also to use the 180 degree rule, match cuts and shot reverse shots, we included all of these in our short film. We also included very original and dynamic angles such as high and low angles.

What could have been done better?

However, even though we included all of the criteria, the filming and editing could have been better. For example, some of our film wasn’t as steady as it could have been as it was hand held, making it shaky. Also during the editing, there are some continuity problems as well as shot jumps, which makes it very unrealistic.

Also after filming we realised that our daylight setting button was on, meaning that our lighting would have been darker than it should have been, however we were lucky that in the kitchen that we were using, there was a bright light so it didn’t make a big difference on the actual film quality.

Next timeNext time we film we will improve our filming and editing. Plus we will make sure our lighting setting is set to what it should be for our surroundings, we will use a tripod or fig-rig more and have shots which would be easier to edit with to seem more professional.
