Planning we did before filming our preliminary task was, firstly I made a short video of different camera angles and shots, this helped me because it gave me an idea of using a camera when filming, especially when doing hand held shots and angles as keeping the camera still is very important for a clean and professional looking shot. Furthermore, when I talked and researched about the effects of these shots and angles this also assisted me because when planning our preliminary task, I had knowledge of the effects my group wanted to create and could easily apply and justify them. Such as this tilt shot before the dramatic moment to portray confusion and frustration Isaac feels as the audience is un-expectantly showed a different angle so see that there is something is about to go wrong.

When we were thinking of the concept for this which had to include an everyday situation with a dramatic moment we came up with Isaac losing a pen before an exam and then going back to find it to find out Harry stole it for the dramatic moment. We chose this because we could include some good camera angles and shots of Isaac walking to and quickly from the exam, and then some of the conversation they have. Such as this over the shoulder shot of Isaac confronting Harry about his stolen pen, where we also included the rule of thirds, to show this conversation is important. Additionally, some more planning we did was before was a practice run of filming, this was helpful because it meant we could practice shots that we liked and experiment a little to see if we could add or change anything. Furthermore, this gave me some more practice filming different angles and shots, such as this high angle of Louis on the floor after being knocked down to show his weakness, and how Isaac is panicked. This was because I was filming not acting in our film.

The 180-degree rule is a filming guideline that when filming actors and sometimes significant objects stay in the same position to the camera. So if person A was to the left of the shot and person B was to the right, they would have to stay the same side even if the camera went into different shots or angles. This is important because if the rule is broken the viewer gets confused and disorientated and starts trying to figure who is who and breaks away from the

story or what they’re meant to be focused on. However, there are some times when the rule can be broken for example when the audience is meant to be disorientated or confused, braking the rule will help to convey this effect as the audience will not know who is who.

We used a variety of different camera angles and shots to represent a variety of effects. An example of this was an extreme close up of both Isaac and Harry’s eyes, we chose to do this because it kind of showed the ‘quiet before the storm’, it put the audience on edge, created tension and the audience could predict that a dramatic moment was going to happen. I had the idea to do this because they do this in other films such as The Dollars trilogy, where an extreme close up is used for these two characters before a dramatic moment happens.

We also used a low angle shot, which is generally used to make one character look bigger and more powerful and intimidating. However, in our shot we didn’t use this angle to go with the conventions associated with it, we used it to capture the mise en scene in that specific shot. We wanted get Harry using the stolen pen and Isaacs reaction to it in the same shot so it would be clear to the audience what was going on, as Harry was sat down and Isaac was standing up the shot had to be a slight low angle. So overall the effects of this shot was to show Isaac being annoyed and shocked at Harry haven stolen his pen.

An example of a shot typed we used was shot reverse shot, we did this because it brings the audeinces direction to the dialouge rather than viuals effects. This was important at that point because the dialouge added to the understanding of the whole clip, its where we find out a lot of the story. Also it added a bit more excitement and picked up the pace a bit more, as a plain mid shot of the conversation would have been duller and slower, and the pace needed to pick up as this was a build up to the dramatic moment. Similarly many other films use this shot for the same effects such as The Wolf of Wall Street when these two characters are having a converstaion, they want you to focus on the dialouge rather than the visual effects.

Additionally, another shot type we used was a panning shot of Isaacs body. We used this because firstly the shot is more engaging than an ordinary mid or maybe long shot which is what we could have used because you have to follow the camera and you want to find out especially what is at the end of the shot so it keeps the audience interested. Secondly the panning shot was used to show the realisation of that Isaac forgot his pen, as the camera moves up his body he is looking for his pen but cant find it, the shot finishes on his face to show his shocked facial expression.

Before we started editing, I had little knowledge of how to do it. By making and editing this clip I have learned how to put in transitions from each different clip whether its cut or fade to black or make two clips fade into each other such as when we had two similar extreme close ups we made them fade into each other. Furthermore, in this example I also learned how to add a filter on to certain clip, on this one there is a black and

white filter. Moreover, I also learned how to put text onto the screen and how to make it fade in and out, such as at the beginning and at the end when we were adding titles.

Slow motion is another technique I developed for example when we put it in at the end when the pen is going out the window.

Additionally, putting non-diegetic music in is something that I improved a lot at because we managed to have it fade in and out with volume at certain points so the dialogue can be heard such as when Isaac pushes Louis out the way and he says

something, the non-diegetic music slightly decreases in volume. We were also able to at some points synchronise the non-diegetic sound to the actions in the clip like more layers of the music were being added the closer we got to the dramatic moment and whilst it was happening.

In contrast a technique I did have a little trouble on was applying a different depth of field, which I think would have been effective at this point in the clip. Firstly the pen would be in focus to have the audeinces attention but then it would shift to Isaacs face to show his reaction.

An effect we added which improved the appeal of our film was adding a black and white filter to the extreme close ups of both Isaacs and Harrys eyes. This was effective because it incited that something dark was about to happen as there were only bleak colours on screen. We also used the two shots fade into each other this added the effect of both Harry and Isaac were thinking similarly and they knew there was tension and that something was about to happen. This added to the appeal because these effects we added for only that short amount of time made a big impact on what the audience sees and interprets.

Moreover, another effect we used was adding slow motion to when the pen is going out the window and Isaac tries to save it. We decided to do this as it was a significant moment in our film and it is a convention commonly used in films when there’s important and tense moment of we don’t know whether some thing or one is going to save a significant object/person such as in the film Zoolander when the character is shouting and running to save someone and we don’t know if he actually will,

slow motion prolongs the answer so it keeps us hooked to watching.

Lastly effects we thought would impact our film was adding non-diegetic music. We thought this would add to the appeal because it added to the dramatic and tense moments. For example, the first non-diegetic music we put in added mystery and suspense because of its tone, which went well with the clips it was put with because at that time in the film we don’t know what is going to happen. Then the second piece on non-diegetic music we put on by Ennio Morricone is well known for being associated with cowboys and stand offs, which is similarly the connotations we wanted to create, so we started this music as soon as there is even a slight chance of a confrontation so the audience can start guessing what is going to happen next therefore engaging them.
