Another method you can use to compare the value of two fractions with different denominators is what Mr. Westerdale (Duncanville Junior High – 1971) called the “bow tie” method.

Try multiplying the denominator on the right to the numerator on the left, and writing this product above that left numerator.

Now, multiply the denominator of the fraction on the left by the numerator of the fraction on the right and put that product over the fraction on the right.

The question now is: Which is bigger, 18 or 25?

OK, there are two issues on the bow-tie method that I find interesting.

1. Can you tell me how it works? (hint: it’s already doing something we’ve been doing in class.)

2. Do you see any problems making this the only way to determine the relative value of fractions?

When three people have indicated they’ve finished by showing me the sign for “d” (done), then you will hear a bell and you are to immediately pass the paper to the person to your left (those on the left will have to give it to the person on the right side of the row behind them. There will be one person on the back row who will have to get up and bring their paper to the person sitting on the right side of the front row.
