MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION UNDERWATER BRIDGE INSPECTION

REPORT SUMMARY:

The substructure units inspected at Bridge No. 88756, the North Abutment and Bent 1,

were found to be in fair condition, with only minor defects of structural significance. The

timber piles were typically sound with random splitting extending from the pile cap down

up to 4 feet. Pile A of Bent 1 had a 1 inch wide by 8 inch deep split extending from the

pile cap down 2.5 feet. The timber around the split was unsound and a hollow core was

visible through the split with an estimated 15 percent loss of pile section. The south

cross-brace at Bent 1 exhibited heavy decay on the upstream end.

INSPECTION FINDINGS:

(A) The channel bottom material typically consisted of gravel and sandy silt with a

maximum probe rod penetration of 6 inches.

(B) The timber piles were typically sound with random splits up to 1/8 inch wide

extending from the pile cap down up to 4 feet.

(C) Pile A of Bent 1 had a 1 inch split extending from the pile cap down 2.5 feet with

up to 8 inches of penetration. The pile was unsound along the length of the split.

A hollow core was visible though the crack, with an estimated 15 percent loss of

pile section.

(D) Pile E of Bent 1 had a 1/4 inch split extending from the pile cap down 2 feet with

up to 2 inches of penetration.

(E) The south cross-brace at Bent 1 exhibited heavy decay on the upstream end with

up to 40 percent loss of section. The deterioration has yet to significantly affect

the Pile E connection.

Page 3: PREPARED FOR THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION BY ... · PREPARED FOR THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION BY COLLINS ENGINEERS, INC. JOB NO. 7423 . MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT

RECOMMENDATIONS:

(A) Repair Pile A of Bent 1 by splicing/posting in a new upper 5 feet of the member

or by another method such as a structural jacket.

(B) Reinspect the submerged substructure at the normal maximum recommended

(NBIS) interval of sixty (60) months.

Inspection Team Leader:

Nicholas R. Triandafilou, P.E.

3. SUBSTRUCTURE INSPECTION DATA

Substructure Inspected: The North Abutment and Bent 1

General Shape: The North Abutment consists of five timber 12-inch-diameter piles with

a 12 inch by 12 inch timber pile cap. The backwall and wingwalls were

comprised of 3 inch by 12 inch timber boards. Bent 1 consisted of five

timber 12-inch-diameter piles with a 12 inch by 12 inch timber pile cap

and two 3 inch by 12 inch diagonal cross-brace boards.

Maximum Water Depth at Substructure Inspected: Approximately 3.0 feet.

4. WATERLINE DATUM

Water Level Reference: Top of the pile cap at the downstream end of Bent 1.

Water Surface: The waterline was approximately 5.3 feet below the reference.

Waterline Elevation 94.7.

5. NBIS CODING INFORMATION (Minnesota specific codes are used for 92B and 113)

Item 60: Substructure: Code 5

Item 61: Channel and Channel Protection: Code 6

Item 92B: Underwater Inspection: Code B/09/12

Item 113: Scour Critical Bridges: Code K/12
