Our Core ValuesWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them. Albert Einstein ~ Theoretical physicist, philosopher and author

With a view toward 2020, we see such changes as the emergence of a new, global economy which increases economic interdependence on the one hand and generates new sources of economic competition on the other; employment transition and the need for retraining and updating job skills in our service region; an environment ripe for innovation and entrepreneurship; a more interconnected world, facilitated by innovations in communication and information networking technologies; the steady expansion of opportunities for interaction, collaboration, and exchange among individuals, businesses, nations, and cultures; an increasing proportion of citizens who are retired and/or 60 years or older; an emphasis on environmentally responsible and sustainable growth; an emerging quest for energy independence and clean and renewable sources of energy; and an environment which both requires and rewards individuals who have developed critical thinking skills, creativity, adaptability, and integrity. In short, we are entering a period in which the excellence, rigor, relevance, and adaptability of WCC’s educational programs and services have never been more consequential.

Wilkes Community College is proud of the “open door” tradition of the North Carolina Community College System, meeting people where they are and providing them with opportunities to enhance their quality of life. Our learners are diverse: Students may be attending the college to prepare for transfer to a senior institution, to earn an associate degree, diploma, or certificate for work, to develop workplace or avocational skills, or they may be high school students taking courses to get a head start on college. Others may be attending to learn basic skills, to learn English, or to earn a high school diploma with plans to subsequently take college-level courses. Some may be seeking to enrich their lives through participation in cultural or recreational opportunities at the college. College employees engage in learning to strengthen skills they use in providing a quality learning environment for students and fellow employees.
