We are born in a world in which certainties and safety are extinct. Actually, the only certain thing we know is that nowadays nothing is certain. !In this context we need to adapt, both on the personal and professional level. Flexibility, adaptability, collaboration, creativity and the ability to move forward no matter the obstacles are becoming today indispensable weapons for those who what to succeed . !And this is what the art of improvisation is about. !Improvisation is a multidisciplinary method with excellent results. So good results that important business schools like UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, MIT’s Sloan School of Management , Columbia Business School have introduced it in the curriculum.

Why improvisation

A study conducted by IBM through one-on-one discussions with 1709 CEOs from 64 countries showed what skills the employees of a company must have in order for it to succeed in 2013: collaboration, communication, creativity, flexibility.

Improvisation helps participants on two levels: !

ATTITUDES COMPETENCIES

What improvisation does

Way of being or to behave (often representing a certain conception); behaviour.

1. Someone's ability to decide over a matter of fact, to do something 2. aptitude

We all improvise every day. Neither professional nor personal life come with a script so we are born with the ability to improvise. The difference between being good or bad at it, as it happens with talents as well , is made by practice. Improvisation, as a development method, is about practice. !In order to be a good improviser you have to know and to apply a series of principles that help participants to develop attitudes and competencies that help them in life, especially in the fast-changing and unpredictable world we live in: to be present, to listen actively, to express with efficiency (verbal and non-verbal), to accept ideas and to build on them, to be flexible, to help others, to have the courage to use ones imagination, to be creative and spontaneous, to judge not and to not be afraid to make mistakes but transform them in opportunities, to be open-minded, curious and to have a sense of humour. !Plus, improvisation starts laughter and increases well-being. This way, the participants are more likely to open and they learn easier, they release stress and relax. Laughter improves health and brings people closer together.

Improvisation works as interactive workshops where participants are involved in exercises and contexts which challenges them to practice and to develop different attitudes and skills depending on the objectives set. !It is recommended that the improvisation workshops consist of recurring sessions lasting 2-4 hours each because learning and changing a habit takes time and perseverance.A group can be formed out of 8-16 participants. The duration and number of participants, however, are flexible and can be tailored to the objectives set. !The exercises and the debriefing discussions are geared towards the development objective set so that participants can be aware of the good things and of the ones that need improvement, to practice the good ones and to correlate them with their activities outside the classroom in order to be able to apply them in real contexts.

How does improvisation work

Who improvisation is forMANAGERS  Improvisation teaches leadership. A good leader needs to understand the importance of each role of a team, to adjust to his team members and then lead them to the desired direction, to listen and accept ideas, to give feedback and to take decisions, sometimes under pressure and in uncertain conditions.

SALES / CLIENT SERVICE TEAMS Improvisation improves communication skills and adaptability – key abilities in

working with other people. Through improvisation participants practice spontaneity in different situations making them more able to adjust to different

types of persons, to be more persuasive and create better connections with other.

CREATIVE TEAMS Improvisation enhances creativity as it forces participants to respond differently in all sorts of situations, to make connections, to think outside the box, to view things from different perspective, to challenge the status quo. In an improvisation workshop they practice their creativity muscle.

TRAINERS(presentation skills) Improvisation is a good method to practice self-esteem and presentation skills. That means working with the non-verbal, emotions, creating catchy speeches and stories.

Improvisation develops the ability to stand in front of a crowd without fear, to use your voice to create impact, to adapt to unexpected situations.

TEAMS (in general) Given the nature of the exercises improvisation is an excellent team bonding method. It helps participants to know

themselves better, gets them to interact, to work in pairs and groups, to trust themselves, to enter each other’s personal space thus becoming more comfortable working together. It is also fun and relaxing adding value to the

organization’s culture.

What others say about improvisation

One of the most beautiful experiences that I have been through, from which I learned a lot of things about myself and other people. The improvisation workshop was for me an excellent opportunity to open, develop and especially to change and restructure my own life experience.

(Mihaela Joian, Recruitment Manager InnerLook)

(...) to be frank I could see the outcomes very quickly in myself. My main goal was to be more spontaneous and decrease my stress while speaking in public, and I have achieved this in only 16 hours/ 8 classes of improvisation. It is unbelievable, but true!  And besides the real benefits that improvisation could bring to your life, both personal as well as professional, it is fun, it energizes and brings out the child in you, lets you play, test, try and learn, learn the way we started out when we were kids, which I believe is the most useful and lasting way of learning. Would I encourage people to attend classes, or workshops, or events of Improvizatie.ro? From all my heart yes! (Carmen Agapi, AVP, EU Project Delivery Leader in GENPACT)

It is a pleasure for me to recommend Corina and Bogdan and I am glad to do this. I worked with them in 2 projects, L&D and CSR dedicated ones and both were successful and much appreciated by both employees and management. What makes the difference in the way Corina and Bogdan work is their involvement in the whole L&D process and interest to understand the client's needs in order to build the best solution. A plus is also the training method that both of them master in a professional way.

(Ioana Jenssen, HR Manager, COMPUTARIS)

The workshop improved my well-being, my vision about the world, my appreciation for little details. It made me think differently and to relate differently with people around me. It is amazing how you can get to know some people without having essential data about them – but to be able to know a part of them, hidden, that maybe not even they knew they had it. (Bogdan, IT Specialist)

To remember about improvisation

Improvisation is a multidisciplinary method, playful, which applied successfully in business helps people and companies to keep up with the world, teaching them to be flexible, more creative and to better work together.

We set the development objectives and after that the working structure, the duration and the frequency of the improv sessions.

We held sessions using appropriate exercises, we analyze in the debriefing session, we launch challenges between the sessions and we recalibrate according to the group’s evolution.

If the case we organize follow-up through discussions or forms and we set a diagnosis for future actions.

Team takes off to new achievements!
