Anu Aga was born on 3 August 1942 in an uppermiddle-class Parsifamily in Mumbai.
She did her B.A. in Economics from St Xavier's
College, Mumbai, and post graduation in medical
and psychiatric social work from the prestigious
Tata Institute of Social Sciences(TISS), Mumbai.She had also been a Fulbright Scholar and
studied in the United States for four months.
Anu was married to Rohinton Aga, a graduate
from the Harvard Business School and became
parents to daughter Meher and son Kurush.Rohinton died in 1996 of massive stroke, and a
little over a year later, her son Kurush died at
the age of 25-years. Today, Arnavaz 'Anu' Aga
lives in Pune, Maharashtra.

Her daughter, Meher Pudumjee is the
current Chairperson of Thermax, taking
over from her mother in 2004.
She is a post graduate in chemical
engineering from the Imperial College
of Science and Technology, London and
joined Thermax in September, 1990,and is also a member of the
Confederation of Indian Industry's (CII)
Family Business Forum and the Young
Indians.

It is in the position of chairperson that Anu Aga has
introduced several measures that were unknown in the
realm of business of India. Being the chairperson, Anu Aga
was instrumental to smooth the progress of four major
turnaround initiatives at Thermax, viz. the reconstitution
of the board, shedding of non-core activities, rightsizing ofoperations and increased focus on the customer. Apart
from this, she also happens to be the main protagonist in
the driving of a high performance culture at Thermax,
especially at the senior levels. But it was in the October of
2004, Anu Aga decided to retire as the chairperson. Buteven though se has not been free from a busy schedule.
Anu Aga has been very active in various national and local
associations like Confederation of Indian Industries (CII)
and was the first woman Chairperson of CII's WesternRegion. She has written extensively and given talks on the
subjects of women empowerment, corporate governance,
value-based management and on corporate social
responsibility.

Not only this, but also she has been to advocateseveral organizations engaged in the promotion ofeducation, above all of the underprivileged
children from slums. With the help of a Mumbaibased NGO called Akanksha, 21 centres have beenopened in Pune for the slum children. Currentlyshe is involved with several NGOs. She is keenlyinvolved in the causes of communal harmony andhuman rights, especially women and children.

She is also closely associated with theThermax Social Initiative Foundation(TSIS).
The foundation, in partnership with themunicipal corporations of both cities andAkanksha, manages two schools for lower-income groups. She is also known for her totransparency in corporate governance.
She has been one of the driving forcesbehind the Teach for India Foundation. Her
work on corporate governance, corporatesocial responsibility, empowerment ofwomen and above all, an inclusive societywith a high emphasis on human rights andcommunal harmony has been noteworthy.

The Akanksha Foundation is a non-profit organization witha mission to impact the lives of children from low-incomecommunities, enabling them to maximize their potentialand change their lives. Akanksha works primarily in thefield of education, addressing non-formal educationthrough the Akanksha center and also formal education byinitiating school reform through The School Project.
Currently, Akanksha reaches out to around 4000 childrenthrough two models: the after-school or center and theschool model. Akanksha has 40 centers and 13 schools inMumbai and Pune. Through the centers, a commitment ismade to support each child by providing a strongeducational foundation, good time, self-esteem and
values, and to help them plan how they can earn a steadylivelihood as a step towards improving their standard ofliving. The School Project is a venture to open high-qualityschools serving children from low-income communities inMumbai and Pune. These schools are in partnership withlocal municipalities, with the vision of creating smallclusters of model schools in these cities that can be usedto impact the mainstream education system.
