In a society faced with many obese children and other related health issues, PDHPE in
primary education provides students the opportunity to have a better lifestyle. PE is
beneficial as it covers important topics for life such as health choices, growth and
development and child protection.
It also helps build skills such as:
Social skills ,
Leadership,
Socialisation and
Communication skills.
‘Physical Education has been used for the
purposes of survival, social control, military
fitness, health, holistic development and
citizen education from the time of the
ancient Greeks.’ Anthony Lasker (2000)

“Young children are used to being the centres of attention. Feeling about self- concept and self-esteem are developing so it is important

Balanced eating habit
Special needs
Fast foods
Digestive system
Through PDHPE we learn many important information on health and development. For example, different illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, or cultural influences such as festivals and religious ceremonies.
Health promotion &
PDHPE also promotes a Healthy and Active lifestyle as well
as an informative unit on child protection and safety. The
World Health Organisation define health as: ‘a state of
complete physical, mental and social well-being and not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity.‘
Through PDHPE a child is able to be provided with a place
where they can work together to protect their health,
whether that is through physical education or Personal
Development and Health lessons. It also allows students
to formulate goals to enhance their participation in
lifelong physical activity.
