Executive SummaryShepherd’s nursery is a garden centre in Prestons NSW which is looking to expand. The current legal structure may not be appropriate for business expansion so partnership may need to be considered. In the external environment, social, competitive and political influences may impact on business success. Internal influences such as management and location should also be considered. AA consultants will make recommendations in regards to the current business situation.

1.0 Legal structureA partnership is an unincorporated business of between 2-20 owners. Partnerships can provide small businesses with many advantages. Taking on a new partner can provide Shepherd’s nursery with the funds needed to finance their expansion. However, one disadvantage of taking on a new partner is that there will be some loss of control of the business for Mr Shepherd.

2.0 External Influences - CompetitionThe competitive situation involves the number and influence of competitors in a market. Since Shepherd’s nursery is in a highly competitive market situation with dominant players like Bunnings, this will impact significantly on current and future sales. Shepherd’s should therefore focus on developing a market niche in areas other than price by offering unique products not offered by competitors. This will ensure that the competition does not overwhelm the business.
