A battery is a group of electrochemical cells interconnected to supply a  nominal voltage of DC power to a suitably connected electrical load.

The number of cells connected in series determines the  nominal voltage rating of the battery.

The size of the cells in the battery is the basic factor that determines the discharge capacity rating of the entire battery.

VRLA Flooded Lead acid  NiCd

Aka:  Gel, AGM, “maintenance free”, sealed Two design types:  10 year and 20 year Life expectancy:  3‐5 years and 10‐12 years 40‐60% of warranted life

Corrosion of positive plate and grid Negative plate discharge Electrolyte dry‐out (loss of compression)

‐vent failure‐excessive heat‐unseen damage in the seams‐overcharging

Aka:  Vented, wet cells, water filled Stationary cells offer 20 years of life expectancy with proper maintenance

Plate thickness or lack thereof and higher specific gravity influence life expectancy

Corrosion of positive plate and grid Sediment build‐up

Commonly called “NiCads”   Lower voltage per cell. Smaller space utilized for nominal system of NiCd vs.Flooded cell.

Sometimes used in warm environments with better results.

Requires a commissioning charge before use.

Gradual loss of capacity Carbonation

Will prolong the life of a battery Will aid in assuring the battery will meet its design requirements

Will determine the need for timely battery replacement before failure
