WOW! Executives’ Night last month was another star-studded evening for EWI of Houston. You are all stars in my eyes and every one of you was shining brightly on April 9, 2015, as we honored our executives for their support over the past year. The impressive Corinthian was the perfect location for this special occasion, especially with all the attention to details provided by member firm Jackson and Company. All of our committees participated in creating magnificent baskets for our silent auction. The Program Committee and the Hospitality Committee along with our fabulous Fundraising Director Kathy Hibbard, representing United Way of Greater Houston, and the entire Fundraising Committee contributed to a very successful event. We raised a total of $68,090.00 from the silent auction, live auction and Dollars for Scholars contributions. Thank you, Houston! The funds raised will be used in our Business Career Development Program, which includes our EWISP and ASIST scholarships. Did you know that EWI of Houston has awarded a total of $266,268 in scholarships since 2011? ($114,000 for EWISP plus $152,268 for ASIST.) We have budgeted to give out $58,000 for scholarships this year. All of our members are to be praised for their time and hard work to put together such a wonderful event. Teamwork makes the dream work. Our EWI of Houston team helps local students achieve their dreams through our scholarships. Our May meeting will be a firm night spotlighting Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty. I look forward to seeing you and your executive on May 14 at the Hotel Granduca. It will be another sparkling evening and one you will not want to miss.
Keep Shining, Houston Stars! Carolyn

DO YOU KNOW…DO YOU KNOW… How to host a table at monthly meetings? It’s easy. Just send an email to 9 EWI reps (assuming it’s a table for 10) and invite them to join you at the next meeting. You don’t have to pay for their dinners unless you include a non-member guest, like your Executive or a co-worker. It’s extra special, but not necessary, to include a token gift for your tablemates – maybe a company mug, pen, etc. After you have compiled your table guest list, be sure to let the Sergeant-at-Arms know who will be sitting at your table. That’s all there is to it.
Our Mission
EWI brings together key individuals from diverse businesses for the purpose of promoting member firms, enhancing personal and professional development, and encouraging community involvement.
Our Vision To be a global women’s organization of 5,000 engaged members empowering others for positive change.

MARCH MEETING RECAPMARCH MEETING RECAP Submitted by Martha Garcia, representing Eschelon Advisors, LP
The festivities of the evening began with a silent auction that included many wonderful items on which to bid. Each EWI Committee donated a basket filled with items that pertained to their theme. It was great fun to see what each basket contained and then to see the other items that were donated. Carolyn Noack, President, representing LINBECK, welcomed the members and Executives to the April Meeting of EWI Houston, the largest and best Chapter in the organization. Carolyn commented that we were very lucky to be at the Corinthian, which is one of the most breathtaking venues in the City of Houston. She also mentioned that Jackson and Company, the premier catering company in Houston, was catering our event that evening. Jackson’s history with EWI goes back 23 years to 1992, when the firm joined EWI. His catering always makes any occasion very special. Jackson then welcomed EWI and mentioned that this was the 10th Executive Night which they have catered. He gave a brief history of the Corinthian stating that it was built in 1905 and was first called the First National Bank of Houston. Carolyn then thanked the Executives who came and mentioned that it was a privilege to honor them at the 2015 Executives’ Night. She gave a brief summary of the Philanthropic projects which EWI has undertaken since the beginning of our 2014-2015 EWI year, which included the Blue Santa Project, making blankets for second graders, collecting books for students, and Dress for Success. Carolyn then invited Erin Brown, representing Osha Liang LLP, to give the invocation. After the invocation, Carolyn invited all to enjoy the delicious Prime New York Strip Steak dinner with rosemary potatoes, grilled zucchini, and warm, soft, yummy yeast rolls. This meal was followed by a scrumptious warm molten chocolate lava cake served with vanilla ice cream. During dinner Carolyn introduced Donna Gurney, Director-at-Large B/C/DP representing JLT Specialty Insurance Services Inc. who oversees the EWI Scholarship Programs. Donna announced that Marji Zamora, ASIST Chairman, representing Minuteman Press Post Oak and Stacey Spears, Chairman representing Houston Symphony Society. Donna then introduced Tia Kretzschmar, our 2013 EWISP ASIST winner, who talked about how EWI changed her life by helping her to achieve her academic goals. She graduated from Lone Star College with an Associate of Science degree with Phi Beta Kappa recognition. She stated: “You helped me and now I am helping others.” We are very proud of Tia and her success. Carolyn then introduced each Executive who attended the meeting. After dinner there was a entertaining and competitive live auction, led by Traci Yeaman. Also contributions were made from the floor for Paddles Up. Linda Petticrew, Vice President/President-Elect representing Shell Energy Resources Company, then acknowledged all who contributed to the auctions and reminded the executives that they could pick up their gifts before leaving. Carolyn thanked everyone for coming and participating in the activities of the evening and asked that all be safe on the way home.

Administrative Assistants Are Involved in Business Decisions Mar 12, 2015 Joan Burge – Founder and CEO at Office Dynamics International In my World Class Assistant™ Certificate program, I teach decision-making. First, I have the groups list in a box on a flip chart, the kinds of decisions administrative and executive assistants can be involved in. They have 12 minutes for the activity and each group usually comes up with a great list. I know assistants are involved in decision-making numerous times throughout the day and week. Most often, I see the same answers from my classes. But then I challenge the participants to think deeper and “outside the box.” So the groups then have to switch and go to a new flip chart in the room and come up with new ideas and write them outside the box on the flip chart. They cannot repeat ideas. They have 12 minutes once again, but now it is harder for them to come up with new ideas. They have to dig deep. Here are some of the new ideas assistants generated for where they can be more involved. Are you involved in any of them at your company? If not, you might get some ideas on where you can be more involved thus challenging your own thinking, adding to your skill set, and becoming more valuable to your executive or organization.

Sometimes in very big and noticeable ways, but most often in subtle (yet impactful) ways. Firm SpotlightFirm Spotlight Submitted by Donna Jones, representing Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Reality
Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty is a full service, upscale real estate firm dedicated to excellence. The company was founded in 1981 by Martha Fuller Turner, a “hands-on” CEO who, together with business partner and Executive Vice President Tom Anderson, is in the office daily and in constant communication with her sales associates, customers, and staff. In 2013, prior to its acquisition by Sotheby’s International Realty, the company closed sales of more than $2 billion. Sales associates at Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty must exhibit those qualities Martha Turner most highly prizes: honesty, integrity, dedication, team spirit, a strong work ethic, technological expertise, market knowledge, and of course, outstanding production. Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty provides in-house educational classes to comply with changes in industry forms, practices and legal procedures. Classes are offered throughout the calendar year and enable sales associates to complete their professional licensing requirements without leaving the office. They also benefit from the highest ratio of support staff to agents of any real estate company in the Houston area. Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty sales associates are extraordinary members of an exclusive team and their reputation precedes them and opens many doors. Once those doors open the real work begins, and that is where Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty’ outstanding training, marketing, technology and support services establish the benchmark for excellence in real estate. Tom Anderson, Co-President & Martha Turner, Founder and Co-President
