Financial Aid Office

Good News

After almost a year, we finally have a replacement for former financial aid advisor Cindy

Surgener. Caroline Henry, an NC State alumna, started working in our office this week.

Caroline, who formerly worked at Richland Bank, will be assisting Amanda with many of our

office’s day-to-day processing functions.

Accomplishments

Federal aid (plus TFS) awarded for ’16-‘17:

Cumulative as of

November 18, 2016

Pell #Pell FSEOG Loans TFS #TFS

$5.36M 1147 $65K $2.97M $372K 185

Amanda has been working with Brandon Stover to sort out issues pre-health students are having

with conflicting course requirements. Amanda identifies students taking courses which are not

required for pre-health, yet required for the actual health major, and Brandon investigates the

possibility of making course substitutions to allow the non-required courses fulfill requirements.

Remember that courses have to be required to count for financial aid.

Once again, the College has been designated “Military Friendly” by G.I. Jobs magazine.

Amanda has completed amassing a box load of documentation required for the annual ODHE

audit of financial aid and enrollment. The material, which includes copies of admission

applications, processed FAFSA reports, selective service confirmations, student account

statements, college transcripts, degree audits, fee schedules, and a college catalog, was mailed to

Columbus this week.

Jim spoke to two classes at Mansfield Senior High School as part of Cheryl Carter’s outreach

efforts.

As we usually do when registration is in full swing, we “worked” the de-registration list and sent

additional notifications to students reminding them of steps needed to complete their financial aid

files.

Jim joined the “Beat Michigan Blood Battle” held on campus this week by contributing a pint of

his O+ blood.

Child Development Center

Good News Our community received news that a local child care program will be closing their program

in June 2017. This is a displacement of approximately 100 children in our community that

will be seeking child care. The good news is many parents are e-mailing, calling, touring our

program. Many are completing applications to enroll their children in our program.

Accomplishments Our early childhood mental health partnership with Catalyst Life Services is providing services for

over six children and their families. Our hope and outcome is to provide appropriate Social Well

Being services for children and families who have struggles in their lives.

Our program contacted six families to participate in our ODE preschool and three families are

interested in enrollment. We will continue to recruit children that turned 4 years old on or after

August 1, 2016 for this preschool service. Families need to be at 200% poverty level or lower to

enroll. Please contact the Child Development Center for further information.

Submitted Ohio Healthy Program documents to maintain our status. Our program must

ensure staff are trained in The Healthy Children, Healthy Weights curriculum, menus

demonstrate adherence to OHP standards, a new healthy policy and a healthy family

engagement activity. We are waiting for the submission results.

Goals

Enroll eight preschool children through the ODE ECE grant.

Provide support and resources to the children and families who are seeking care and

education in our community.

Good News

The completion of the program assessment reports ahead of schedule is amazing. Almost all

programs have emailed in their program assessment reports!!!

17 faculty members have allowed the Noel Levitz survey to be deployed in their classes in

the last two weeks. This is really wonderful.

Deans and Assistant Deans, Lori Zeigler, and Christie Bowie have worked hard to gather

information on adjunct faculty credentialing for the HLC report due December 15th.

Accomplishments

The evidence requested for the Perkins grant has been uploaded and the college is again, in

compliance with time to spare

The new curriculum committee handbook has been finished and widely circulated. Many

positive comments have been received.

Goals

Systems portfolio closer to completion.

All planning for the strategy forum should be set within the next 2 weeks.

Business, Industry, and Technology, Education, Professional

and Public Services

Accomplishments

The division appreciates all of our faculty working with career centers to build and bolster

program enrollment; e.g. Jesse Payne recently joined the advisory board for Ehove Career

Center.

This year’s review of articulation agreements with CTE’s has started. ACWH has added

agreements for maintenance and engineering with their new RAMTEC award. Pioneer’s

agreements largely remain in place from last year. New additions to the CTAG list have

shortened the process and will offer greater flexibility to the students.

Room 203, 2nd floor, Kehoe renovations are underway. The former banquet room will

become the IST and robotics lab starting Spring, 2017.

Dean T had his second “PB&J” (peanut butter and jelly) lunch party with students who

wanted to drop by the student lounge. There were an abundance of College Now Students

participating and an occasional visit with an older student. The event was awesome with 3.5

loaves of bread, lots of jelly and jam and one huge box of chips being devoured.

Goals

We had our first Prior Learning Assessment meetings. Attending were Thomas Mansperger,

Tom Prendergast, Monica Durham, Linda Hess, and Greg Timberlake. We identified the

following action steps and concerns.

a) Concerns: we need to seek more appropriate language when presenting PLA to current

and future students

b) Thomas Mansperger would like to try a late winter/early spring open house kind of event

where we invite the community to learn how “what they know” can be credited. Thomas

and Greg will work this idea through the deans meeting as well.

c) We recognize a need to move forward on an advising book so that options available to

students in different programs are more easily accessible.

Page 7: President’s College Update...President’s College Update 4 Goals We have started and are continuing to work on Encore set up for processing 2017-2018 financial aid. We will be providing

d) Linda Hess gave an update on the TAACCCT III consortium relationship with CAEL.

We agreed to pursue funding through TAACCCT for CAEL training and possibly a

subscription for their PLA Accelerator program.

The dean has requested that the Director of the SBDC, Michalina Lacy, meet with Ryan

Miller, Accounting and Entrepreneurship faculty, in order to develop a short overview vision

of what an exceptional entrepreneurship program at NCSC would encompass. After

receiving this, the departments at Kehoe will review and seek broader input from the

Administration and stakeholders. We would like a vision with enough power to present for

grant opportunities and funding as appropriate.

Health Sciences

Good News

Congratulations to Health Sciences Faculty 2015-2016 CANVAS Artist; Amy Elderbrock,

Justin Tickhill, Abby Levitt, and Jeff Taylor. Students have chosen these individuals for their

excellence in using CANVAS to support student learning and success. Thanks to all.

Accomplishments

Tech Prep agreements for Health Sciences have been completed.

All Lab fee updates for all health courses sent to Lori McKee.

Goals

Complete new billing & coding course agreement with Madison Adult Education

Last phase of completion for simplifying the health program selection process

Complete the retention and success plan for full time faculty and programs

Liberal Arts Good News

The Honors College final colloquium will be on Wednesday, November 30, 6 to 7:00 p.m.,

in room 164 Fallerius. Doug Kreinik of Kreinik Manufacturing in Parkersburg, West

Virginia, will detail how his family took a love of interesting threads for arts and crafts and

literally spun it into a thriving world-wide business. Doug will also share information on the

company’s special project, “C. A. K. S. Laces,” which generates funds for suicide

prevention, addiction counseling and grief support programs.

The Honors College Poster Exhibition will be Wednesday, November 30, 8 am to 6

p.m. Honor students will display their projects in the Conard Student Lounge area on the 1st

floor of Fallerius. We encourage faculty, staff, students and the community to visit and view

the efforts of the outstanding students participating in the Honors College fall semester.

Accomplishments

The Feast of Love food drive was a HUGE success! Not only did this event meet the initial

goal of serving 100 families in the Mansfield area through a partnership with Mansfield

Senior High School, but we also surpassed that goal and will be serving almost 200 families

through the generosity of our NCSC board members, students, faculty, staff and individuals

throughout our community (including the 179th base in Mansfield).

Division lab fees for 2017-18 have been reviewed and revised.

Goals Update division/department web pages by the end of the semester.

Complete policy and procedure related to exploratory major, credential review, and Liberal

Arts advising responsibilities.

Tech Prep Good News

On Thursday, November 17 and Friday, November 18, I will be presenting on High Quality

CTE Pathways at the OSII (Ohio School Improvement Institute) in Columbus, Ohio.

Dan Wagner has been, and continues, to visit the local CTE (Career Technical Education)

secondary programs in the area to revisit and update our articulation agreements for this

year’s graduating seniors. Jim Hull is working with the schools to update all of the health

related agreements with these same schools. They are checking for changed curriculum and

courses that have become CTANs. CTAN courses are not allowed in an articulation

agreement and this is having a huge impact on some of the career fields. NC State, Tech

Prep and the career centers are making every effort to apply with these requirements.

Accomplishments

Worked with Bob Haas to set up a date where he can train the teachers at Mansfield Senior

High School on how to submit their CTAN courses for approval. They are behind on getting

this accomplished. This workshop will be held in February 2017.

Met with the Tech Prep chief administrator and consultants from the Northwest Region to

share how we have standardized our articulation agreement format and processes in the

Central Region.

Have established several ODE meeting for this fall and into early next year. The major

meeting is with the ODE CTE leadership where they will share some important imitative

with our CTE partners. There will also be a series of workshops for secondary Business and

Marketing teachers to provide strategies and lesson for delivering their curriculum in new

and exciting ways.

Goals

The Tech Prep Steering committee is planning a series of meetings that will focus on various

career pathways in this area. Dr. Reed may ask some of you or your faculty to participate in

upcoming meetings.

o December. 8 – Education and Training

o January 30 – Arts and Communications

o February 27 – Manufacturing and Engineering Design, Part I

o March 27 – Manufacturing and Engineering Design, Part II

o April 24 – Transportation Systems.

o The annual Tech Prep Stakeholders meeting is scheduled for April 25, 2017 at 6:00 p.m.

To update all 100+ articulation agreements with our secondary and adult CTE programs in

the NC State service area and a few beyond our service area.

Assist the college, adult center and secondary CTE provided to submit their CTANs for ODE

approval. Then educate all partners on how to assist the students to receive CTAN credits.

Urban Center and Outreach

Good News

Carter has presented on the topic of "Success after High School" to a number of student

groups recently. They include

o Mansfield Senior High Freshman

o Mansfield Senior High Sophomores

o Mansfield Senior High Seniors - College and Career Readiness Classes

This last week of presentations has been particularly revealing. These young people, no

matter their race, socio-economic background, or level of academic performance, they want

to live better lives, they want to thrive and be successful. In their own words, some are afraid,

anxious, nervous, overwhelmed, and worried. And while there are many in the current senior

class seem to have it all together, they have needed help along the way to make progress in

their admissions process to the school of their choice. Today, a group of freshman shared

with me that they believe that the "people" of Mansfield "look down" on them and that there

is no place for them here. Other students reported feeling invisible as though adults who have

the power to help them simply don't "see" them. I did my best to encourage them as I always

Page 10: President’s College Update...President’s College Update 4 Goals We have started and are continuing to work on Encore set up for processing 2017-2018 financial aid. We will be providing

do. It's difficult for anyone to make it through tough times when it feels like there is nothing

ahead of them or no one to cheer them on. Hats off to our friends at Mansfield City Schools

who show up every day for children who are struggling in ways we could never imagine. It is

a privilege for us to show up in the lives of these children and do all that we can to help them

transition to the next level.

Jim Phinney presented to two sections of the College and Career Readiness Class. Thank you

Jim! With his 30 plus years as a professional educator, Jim went in prepared to speak

specifically about Financial Aid matters. After taking the pulse of the classes, he adjusted to

make his content relevant and address the needs of the students. He addressed the

opportunities and pitfalls in paying for college. More than anything, they simply need to see

that we care and that starts by showing up, speaking from our hearts and simply telling them

they can make it. That's what Jim did. He shared his own story, his son's story and offered to

help any student and his\her family with financial aid no matter where they planned to attend.

Jim made a difference on Wednesday at Senior High.

The Urban Center hosted it's eighth group of seniors from Mansfield Senior High on

November 14th. The student's completed a series of self-exploration assessments and career

exploration exercises. The deep dive into careers enabled them to identify the skills and

education necessary to enter a specific field. After guided discussion, they selected the NC

State Major for their first career and applied to the college. We have found that a number of

students simply do not know their social security numbers by heart and are held up in

completing the steps for application as well as the FAFSA. We are of course assisting young

men with securing their Selective Service #.

Carter has followed up with pastors who attended the Pastoral Dinner on November 10th at

the UC hosted by Dr. Diab and facilitated by Overseer Renea Collins of Kingdom Grace

Fellowship Church and Pastor Nate Meiers of Berean Baptist Church. The objective is

reaching out to influencers in the community to change the culture and emphasize the

importance of higher education.

Carter continues to meet with and advise prospective NC State students from Senior High's

graduating class of 2016 as well as community referrals.

Title III (submitted by Bev Walker)

Good News

Priority Registration has been completed with the new Advising/Registration Planning tool.

There were only a few glitches. Students, for the most part, seemed to be able to use it with

little difficulty. Thanks to all the faculty who helped share the new “how-to” directions to use

the software and/or showed their students the “how-to” video. And thanks to everyone on

campus who had a part in “getting the word” out to all the students! All of you made this

major registration change a success!

Accomplishments

Some of the liaisons are working with first term students and creating their long range

academic plan in the new advising/registration tool. Brandel is also working with students

who have input their own plan into the Advising/Registration Planning Tool, and are asking

for her approval, which she can do electronically.
