attended the BOMAInternational Convention andOffice Building Show in
Philadelphia this past June. Forthose of you who have not had theopportunity to attend this annualconference, here is a glimpse into afun and information-packed fourdays. Along with a betterunderstanding of BOMAInternational’s work on behalf ofour industry, I had an absoluteblast exploring Philadelphia withcolleagues from the bay area andnationwide. I hope this briefglimpse will encourage you toattend the annual conferencescheduled in Anaheim, June 27 –29, 2010.
Friday, June 26It was 89 degrees when we landed and Icouldn’t help but thank my cabbie for the“warm” welcome. The convention hotelwas in the heart of downtown whichbeckoned me out to explore the city. Youneed your wits about you in Philly, it’s agritty city, especially at night, and I wasgrateful that my “street smarts” cameright back to me.
Saturday, June 27At 8 a.m. I attended the BOMAPAC(BOMA International’s Political Action
Committee) Council Meeting and learnedthat BOMA is the only real estateassociation actively engaged in energy andwater issues. Energy is our top priority.
Then I attended the Energy &Environment Committee and was met bythe breaking news that the Waxman-Markey climate bill, which has as itscenterpiece a cap-and-trade program forreducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, was passed the day before. Our BOMAadvocate apologized for not having readthe whole 1,200 page bill (!) and gave asuccinct and expert presentation on whatthe legislation meant for our industry.

New Opportunities for Greater Exposure in theLocal Commercial Real Estate Marketplace
On-line Buyers Guide and Website Ads Now Available at www.bomasf.org
OMA San Francisco has joined forces withNaylor Publications to provide an on-linebuyers guide and sell advertising on our
website (www.bomasf.org). Naylor alreadyproduces our annual printed membership directory, and they produce on-line buyers guides for severalother associations including a few local BOMAs.While people will still be able to view membershipinformation on our website, the online buyers guidegives advertisers the ability to create direct links totheir own web sites, share product / serviceinformation, etc. Bottom line: more informationavailable more ways to more people, whilegenerating more revenue for BOMA.
Each BOMA member will receive a basic listing aspart of their membership, but can enhance thatlisting in a variety of different ways, each at adifferent price point. (We hope some of ourPrincipal members will take advantage of thisopportunity—it’s not just for Associate members).Naylor will be responsible for all ad sales, and anyquestions should be directed to Vicki Sherman,[email protected], 800-369-6220 x3417. 54th Annual Elmer Johnson Golf TourneyGreat Golf, Great Weather, Great Company, Great Prizes!
Elmer Johnson was BOMA’s Executive Director from 1945 to1985. Elmer was the quintessential San Francisco Gentlemanwho initiated the tournament in 1954, and who dedicated 40years of his professional life to BOMA San Francisco and theoffice building industry. In many ways, his professional tenureat BOMA paralleled the growth and development of SanFrancisco.
The 55th Elmer Johnson Golf Tournament is nowone for the record books. Monday morning,August 24th saw the start of a perfect day at
Peninsula Golf and Country Club. Liz Allio (UniversalProtection Service) rounded up her troops and kick-started everyone’s heart with complimentary mimosasand a great selection of breakfast pastries guaranteed tobring on a sugar rush. 156 golfers started their enginesand headed out to do battle not only with the golf coursebut also with the food and drink offerings strategicallylocated around the course.
Waxie’s Bob Bielenbeg provided the true “spirit” of thisannual tournament by serving jambalaya and ricewashed down with a mai tai. Able Services’ Mark Kellyprovided a full bar to serve whatever the golfers wantedto compliment bbq ribs. Marble West broke withtradition and bbq’d tri tip sandwiches rather thanshrimp, accompanied by premium tequila. Brad andGrant West willingly shared their “knowledge” oftequila with anyone who would listen. ABM, under thesupervision of Lorrie Hedges, cooked a variety ofsausages with plenty of beer to wash them down.Skyline Construction’s Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream cart heldtasty treats and some of David Hayes’ vodka that he waskeeping chilled for thirsty golfers.
Following the tournament, Restoration Managementsponsored the 19th Hole. Special thanks to the rafflesalespersons extraordinaire – Kim Tamayo (RestorationManagement), Aline Signman (Cushman & Wakefield)and Jackie Nolen (Detection Logic Fire Protection).Golden Gate Disposal & Recycling provided wine forevery table to accompany the delicious buffet dinner. Totop it off, the crowd helped Tim Ballas (CB RichardEllis) celebrate his 50th birthday with a huge cake and alively rendition of Happy Birthday.
In case you were thinking that this was just a food andbeverage event, some golf – both good and poor – wasplayed. No matter the skill level, everyone agreed this isthe preeminent BOMA event to attend each year.
The tournament winners were:
Closest to the Hole (Men) – Bob Martinez (MetropolitanElectric)Closest the Hole (Women) – Liz Trowbridge (LBARealty)Longest Drive (Men) – Lucas Heller (Cushman &Wakefield)Longest Drive (Women) – Anne Sparks (Hines)1st Place Team (Men) - Rand Bottom (Kaiser), KevinGreenlee (McKesson), Stev Yick (JP Edwards) & FernandoIniguez (Turner Construction)1st Place (Mixed) - Manny Moreno (PM Realty), SteveGrandin (DPR), Dave Neilsen (Cannon Contractors) &Sonia Bastidas (Giampolini)1st Place (Women) - Lisa Blanford (CottonwoodPartners), Sandy Brownstone (Hines), Stacia Keisner (CBRichard Ellis) & Lesley Snyder (ABM)Worst Score - we will not embarrass them, but BenNerone (Hastings Law College), Steve Whitcom (RREEF),Wayne Wong and Mike Eurkus (NRG San Francisco) -thank you for being such good sports!
The evening ended with a raffle. The “coup de grace”was the grand prize “Deck of Cards” generously donatedby NRG Energy Center San Francisco. The prizeincluded a night at the Pebble Beach Lodge, dinner fortwo, a spa treatment and a round of golf at Pebble Beach.Congratulations to winner Bob Martinez (MetropolitanElectric).

In the evening Ihigh-tailed it tothe LeadershipReception to meetmy friends andcounterparts fromacross the country. We decided thiswas the night to
find the best Philly cheesesteak in Philly!! There seemedto be two contenders, Gino’s & Pat’s, and we considereda ½ sandwich at each; but opted for the shortest line (45minutes) and got our cheesesteak fix at Pat’s.Afterwards we walked back through the streets on awarm summer night and enjoyed all the mosaics andmurals available for public view.
Sunday, June 28I got up brightand early to signup for the localbuilding tours. The host cityalways pulls outthe stops, andwe get to visitthe newest andmost interestingsites. Philly did not disappoint. We toured the brandnew Comcast Center (see the heights and depths inphoto’s) and the Friends Meeting House circa 1856 asexamples of sustainable properties. It was especiallyinteresting that the Quakers pursued sustainability forspiritual reasons. As pacifists, they believe the use offossil fuels leads to war, so they invested in geothermalenergy, a living roof and a closed loop water system,
among otherthings, to get offthe grid andconserve. Ourguide humorouslynoted that thefirst area thatrequires greening“is your head”.
Sunday’s Opening General Session included a goodpanel discussion of market conditions and I reallyenjoyed getting a national perspective. In the evening,BOMA Philadelphia hosted a wonderful Welcome Party, another great event at every BOMA International. Ittook place in Constitution Hall and featured excellentactors strolling around as our founding fathers. Iparticularly enjoyed my half hour conversation withThomas Jefferson, along with all the music, food andspectacle presented with a patriotic theme.
Monday, June 29Today’s General Session featured Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International, author of The Post-American World and television pundit. His analysis ofAmerica’s current state of affairs revealed an incrediblebreadth and depth of knowledge that he skillfully wovetogether in an understandable and refreshingly positiveway. Perceiving our recent crisis as a great morality playis overly simplistic – our situation is more a result ofour successes, which can be traced back to the 50’s and60’s, than our failures. It was an insightful and inspiringpresentation.
In the afternoon I spent a good amount of timeexploring the Office Building Show. I appreciate thenew products and meeting both potential and existingproviders. Right now I am very focused on how to usewhat I have more effectively, so I had lengthyconversations with my national reps. The show hasraffles and prizes and (my personal favorite)complimentary massage!
Tuesday, June 30There are tons of educational offerings throughout theconvention and I get to as many as I can. This year I wasproud that seven members of BOMA SF presented orserved on educational panels. I found Sustainability –Navigating the Green Maze by Mike Steele and CarlosSantamaria of Glenborough particularly worthwhile.
Looking forward to the BOMA International Conference andOffice Building Show next June in Anaheim, I encourage youto attend. Anaheim is convenient, affordable, and a greatplace for west coast companies to gather, learn and enjoy.
