Down by one order from last year, but higher in total length under construction, the 2015 Global Order Book justifies an optimistic future, especially if you consider stability optimistic. Like last year, the industry is contracting into core strength areas for production; again, the historic yards have more orders, and again we tally a record number of very, very large yachts. Showing the impact of these large projects, the total length of builds in this year’s Global Order Book increased by 1,227 feet this year.

The global production map shows only one modification with the U.S. and the U.K. switching positions on the top builder country list. The U.K. moves up to fourth place while the U.S. slides down to fifth. Europe is the largest producer in terms of length with Italy far out in front. Even if some Italian yards seem overly optimis-tic—certainly a good number of their projects are built on speculation—we note a slight reduction in the total length this year (10,686 meters last year vs. 10,474 meters this year). This is due to a number of large yachts, such as Saramour and Yalla at CRN, Grace E at Perini/Picchiotti and Okto at ISA Yachts, leaving the order book as they were delivered. A new 100-meter-plus project signed by Benetti after our official September 1 deadline does not appear in this year’s GOB.

RULES AND METHODOLOGY

THE GLOBAL ORDER BOOK was established in 1992 by the

editors of ShowBoats International magazine to provide a body of data, updated annually in a systematic fashion, that shows the scope of economic activity within the inter-national luxury yacht industry. Each year, we present a list of yachts 24 meters (78' 8") and longer, on order as of September 1, at ship-yards throughout the world.

Every effort is made by the editors

to ensure that the Global Order Book data is comprehensive and accurate. We rigorously survey all the shipyards currently building yachts in the specified size range. Every shipyard receives the same list of rules and, whenever possible, shipyard data is cross-referenced with other industry sources.

In many cases, the data is corroborated with personal visits to shipyards. Participation in the Global Order Book is entirely

voluntary and is free of charge. For a project to be included in

the 2015 Global Order Book the yacht must be 24 meters (78' 8") or longer. New projects must be signed and with a minimum 10 percent deposit received by the shipyard by, on or about September 1, 2014.

Speculative (“on spec”) construc-tion may be listed, but only if actual construction, i.e. cutting metal, hull lay-up or tooling, is started by, on, or about the same date.

2015 reporting fewer orders. Christensen is the bright spot on the West Coast. With Westport’s change of ownership during 2014, fewer projects are not entirely unexpected, but with the new investment and a new model we are likely to see a nice increase in the next GOB. Only yards producing smaller yachts like Hatteras and specialized ones like Viking, Jarrett Bay, Weaver Boats and Gunboats, which all announced new flagships, are showing growing numbers.

In the category of yachts more than 250 feet, orders are up 25 percent over last year. And there is a record number of builds breaking the 100-meter barrier. We recorded 15 100-meter-plus projects in the 2013 GOB and 19 last year. No fewer than 23 projects are now on the books, representing a total of 2,765 meters (9,072 feet). Note that a couple of other 100 meters-plus were signed after our deadline and one very exciting 101-meter sailing yacht project remains on hold.

Three of these giants are scheduled for delivery before the end of the year, and no fewer than six others will be launched in 2015. Lürssen leads the way in this special market, and even if it’s unoffi-cial from the respective yards, we have it on good authority that Feadship and Oceanco signed new orders. The future will be exciting.

Historic yards recorded some interesting new orders, giving them enough work for the coming years, until 2018 for some. Some yards are clearly back to the level of production seen before the crisis, such as Feadship with 12 official projects (but we know that their order book includes 16 projects as they count only the builds whose hull have reached one of the three Feadship yards), Oceanco with four official projects (and unofficially two others are already under construction at their sub-contractor facility). Heesen and Amels also show a nice increase in total length under construction over last year.

Again this year, semi-custom production is trend-ing up in the U.K. and China, mostly at the expense of Italy. Ferretti Group, however, bucks this trend

and an increase of eight projects over last year’s book to confirm its second place. The average length of its builds is also up. Turkey continues to lose market numbers but still retains the same ranking as last year, while the U.K. and China continue to grow. Greece is still in 10th place this year, but will soon leave this Top 10 list following the delivery of two large superyachts.

and seems to have gotten its house in order. In 2013, Ferretti Group announced 50 projects, which dropped to 32 last year, and bounced back to 49 this year with some new models and custom projects. Its total length under construction jumped an astounding 46 percent in this year’s GOB.

Sailing yacht orders are relatively stable, account-ing for 12.1 percent of the market. Open yachts (express cruisers) are falling while expedition numbers are growing, which confirms a new trend among buyers. The number of opens in build (42) is less than half of what it was at the all-time high recorded in 2009, although the size of opens has increased over the years. And for the first time since we began keeping records, the number of expedition yachts on order has surpassed that of opens. The yacht buyer philosophy is definitely changing, maybe helped by fuel prices and an increased interest in family time during circumnavigations or long voyages to exotic lands.

Noted in this 2015 Global Order Book are several hulls attributed to a shipyard designated “custom.” Most of them are currently under construction in a listed shipyard, but for contractual or security reasons their builders chose not to confirm our sources officially even if we know these projects to exist. More details about them are forthcoming.

A note about projects listed as “on hold:” While they are not progressing, they are not abandoned either. In most cases, there is little news coming from these stalled projects but we need to keep them in mind because they can come back on the market at a moment’s notice. A good example this year is the 131-foot My Darlings. The first hull, produced by FNM in Spain, was on hold for many years until it was finally completed in Greece. It is the same story with the 250-foot project M25, which began its life at San Marco in Italy and now is at a Dutch shipyard and due to be delivered in 2017. Another example is a build started at Sevmash now being completed at ISA Yachts.

world. Prestigious yards also continue to develop this activity, including Royal Huisman, Feadship, Mondo Marine, Pendennis, Trinity, Lürssen and RMK.

The past year has been extremely interesting for the brokerage market, which should have a real impact on the Global Order Book soon. Very good buying activity purged the market of a lot of yachts that had been for sale for a long time, thus removing barriers to new construction for some owners and reducing options for some would-be owners. Nearly every semi-custom builder from Azimut to Westport has tooling for new models and nearly every custom builder has invested in new designs to lure custom boat buyers.

We are optimistic and believe there are solid numbers to support our positivity. Apprentice programs and job fairs are on the front burner as the industry tries to re-staff and lure new talent for the next decade of growth. More importantly for the future of the industry, the world has again counted a record number of new billionaires. But the fluctu-ating marketplaces, a surprising cool-down in BRIC countries’ economic growth and an uneven economy in Europe could keep a foot on the brakes for an industry otherwise poised for growth. •

El Fort Lauderdale Boat Show 2014 concluyó y de las naves exhibidas el VELOCE 140 fue, como era de esperarse, una de las más admiradas. La

más reciente adición del BENETTI a su línea ‘Class Fast Displacement’, VELOCE 140 es un yate tanto de lujo como de alta performance gracias a las innovaciones tecnológicas de su casco y sus sistemas de propulsión. Puede ir a velocidad crucero de hasta 12 nudos en modalidad de bajo consumo de energía así como a 40 nudos en total confort. Cabe mencionar que el motor de la nave fue revelado como el más grande que se haya montado en el astillero de BENETTI.VELOCE 140 cuenta con cuatro cubiertas para el máximo disfrute de una travesía marina. La ‘Sun Deck’, en la par-te más alta, es una extensa cubierta de más de 77 m² que goza de vista periférica del mar y una piscina central. El diseño y la disposición son una exquisita combinación de elegancia y funcionalidad. La ‘Upper Deck’ se carac-

teriza por su mobiliario, diseñado para ser removido o acomodado con facilidad. En la proa se encuentra otra área de relajación con una segunda piscina. En la ‘Main Deck’ tienen lugar el gimnasio y un comedor que se ex-tiende del interior al exterior de la nave. Finalmente la ‘Lower Deck’ es la cubierta que lleva al área de habita-ciones. Estas consisten en una principal, dos dobles y dos para huéspedes.El diseño de los interiores puede ser altamente per-sonalizado según los deseos del cliente. Las maderas principalmente empleadas incluyen Tay gris ligero y Tabu gris pizarra. Los elementos decorativos tienen un acabado en laca plateada y los techos poseen alcantaras y acabados en laca blanca, asimismo todos los com-ponentes de acero inoxidable tienen acabados satina-dos. Owners and personnel from Benetti yard celebrated the launch of the 60-metre motoryacht.

The steel and aluminium super yacht, whose exterior styling and lines were all drawn in house at Benetti, has five decks, a beam of 10.6 meters and a total volume of 1,060 gross tons.

The interior layout and design of the guest's area were created by the Sinot Design Studio, in close collaboration with the owner. The layout is articulated in five suites for up to ten guests, andsets aside one whole deck for the owner's apartments. The captain plus a crew of 14 is available to see to all the guest's needs

Formosa is testament to the successful collaboration between owners and the Benetti yard.

MY Formosa, FB255 – powered by twin MTU 12V4000 M53 engines, developing 1,380 kwh at 1,800 rpm, the FB255 has a maximum speed of 16 knots, with a cruising speed of 15 knots. Atthe fuel saving speed of 12 knots, her range is 5,000 nautical miles.

O design exterior e toda arquitetura naval foram desenvolvidos pela Benetti, mas o design interior foi responsabilidade da SinotExclusive Yacht Design da Holanda. Entre os principais amenities da embarcação estão um elevador, Jacuzzi, estabilizadores eum helipad.

60m “Formosa” has been launched by Benetti

Leading Italian yacht builder Benetti (http://www.benettiyachts.it/) launched the new 60m motor yacht“Formosa” aka FB255.

Formosa was constructed in steel (hull) and aluminum (superstructure) has a beam of 10.60m and gross tonnage of 1,060 t.

The exterior was designed in-house by Benetti while interior design and layout for the guest areas was made by SinotExclusive Yacht Design (http://sinot.com/) from the Netherlands in close collaboration with the owner of Formosa. The yachtaccommodates up to 10 guests in five cabins. One whole deck is reserved for the owner area.

The number of owners we speak to who used to be avidcharterers before they made the decision to buy is notable. The evolution is very much the same in our industry. Charterenough yachts and many clients will eventually feel an inclinationto compile the best elements of all of their favourites and buy theirown. For designer Terence Disdale, the answer to the ‘why own?’question is perfectly simple: “Because they like to feel like it’s theirhome and not like it is a hotel, simple as that.”

No one spends a seven- to nine figure sum without expectingsome sort of mutual return. And if we consider that a superyachtcosts several million a year to run and there is no hope of everrecouping what you have invested when it is time to sell, it is safeto say that the return will not be financial. What those who havechartered understand better than anyone is that the return oninvestment will be entirely personal. Years- and yachts-worth ofmemories offer a real appreciation for the unique value of theseassets of passion. Charterers will also have a far betterawareness of exactly what they want when the time comes to buyor build. You see it increasingly often – new owners jumpingstraight in at the top end of the superyacht ladder only to realisethat it is not the best size for how they want to use it or the layoutcould be better suited to their needs.

Clients who jump into ownership without any prior experience ofthe industry, those who view a superyacht as an expensive toy orslightly flippant luxury asset, are more likely to be disappointed orblindsided by the reality of owning one. Whether it is unrealisticexpectations of running costs, or charter income, or the resaleprice of their yacht when the time comes to sell, a disillusionedowner is unlikely to stick around or recommend that their friendsjoin them on the high seas.

So, back to our young charterer. Why own? Much like howownership is about the personal return on investment rather thanthe financial, the decision to own predominately comes down topersonal rather than practical reasons. The symbiotic relationshipbetween charter and ownership means that in order for most tofind the answer to the question, they need to charter for a whilefirst. Give them a few years’ yacht hopping and enjoying thefreedom of charter and hopefully we will one day gain anotherexperienced and educated owner.

Earlier today we reported that Benetti was in the process of launching project FB 255. These photos show that the 60 metre superyacht,named Formosa, has now been launched. The yacht was sold to the client by Jan Jaap Minnema of Fraser Yachts, in 2012.

Bizarrement identifié dans la catégorie des "petits megayachts", le Benedetti Tradit ion SupremeBenedetti Tradit ion Supreme108108 a la particularité inédite d'avoir 3 ponts, chose rarissime sur un bateau de "seulement" 32 mètresde long. La version "My Paradis""My Paradis" se pare donc d'intérieurs boisés du plus bel effet, donnant un côtécosy et chaleureux. Petite cerise sur le gâteau, la version en images ci-dessous, disposera d'un sauna.

The latest from the Benetti yards is the 60-meter FB255 M/Y Formosa, sold in 2012 by FraserYachts, and launched on schedule the 4th of this month at Livorno.

The steel and aluminium super yacht, whose exterior styling and lines were all drawn in house atBenetti, has five decks, a beam of 10.6 meters and a total volume of 1,060 gross tons.

The interior layout and design of the guest's area were created by the Sinot Design Studio, in close collaborationwith the owner. The layout is articulated in five suites for up to ten guests, and sets aside one whole deck for theowner's apartments. The captain plus a crew of 14 is available to see to all the guest's needs.

M/Y Formosa FB255 – powered by twin MTU 12V4000 M53 engines, developing 1,380 kwh at 1,800 rpm, the FB255 hasa maximum speed of 16 knots, with a cruising speed of 15 knots. At the fuel saving speed of 12 knots, her range is5,000 nautical miles.

Benetti has announced the launch of the 60m superyacht Formosa.

Sold in 2012 by Fraser Yachts, the steel and aluminium motor yacht, whose exterior styling and lineswere all drawn in house at Benetti, has five decks, a beam of 10.6 metres and a total volume of 1,060gross tons.

The interior layout and design of the guest’s area were created by the Sinot Design Studio, in closecollaboration with the Owner. The layout is articulated in five suites for up to ten guests, and sets asideone whole deck for the owner’s apartments. The captain plus a crew of 14 is available to see to all theguest’s needs.

Formosa is powered by twin MTU 12V4000 M53 engines, developing 1,380 kwh at 1,800 rpm. She hasa maximum speed of 16 knots, with a cruising speed of 15 knots. At the fuel saving speed of 12 knots,her range is 5,000 nautical miles.
