Skill Level: Intermediate Finished Quilt Size: 65” x 65”

Please read all instructions before beginning.

Pre-washing recommended for hand dyes only. Pre-washing NOT recommended for panels and print.

Yardages and Cutting WOF is width of fabric from selvedge edge to selvedge edge.

Remove as little fabric as possible when squaring strip ends.

1 Floral Animal panel • Fussy-cut (9) 11 1/2" x 11 1/2" squares, keeping an

animal frame centered.

1 yard floral print • 2 strips 9" x WOF; cut into (24) 3" x 9" rectangles.

• 5 strips 1 3/4" x WOF; cut into (96) 1 3/4"

squares.

2 yards pink hand dye • 1 strip 11 1/2" x WOF; cut into (18) 1 3/4" x

11 1/2" strips.

• 1 strip 14" x WOF; cut into (18) 1 3/4" x 14"

strips.

From the remainders of these two strips, cut (32)

1 3/4" x 1 3/4" squares.

• 1 strip 14" x WOF for inner border; cut into (12)

3” x 14” strips, and (4) 3” x 3” squares.

• 7 strips 1 1/2" x WOF for outer border.

• 7 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for binding.

3/4 yard white print

• 7 strips 3" x WOF for border.

3/4 yard dark green hand dye • 5 strips 1 3/4" x WOF; cut into (64) 1 3/4" x 3"

rectangles.

• 3 strips 2 1/8" x WOF; cut into (32) 2 1/8" squares.

1 yard light green hand dye • 5 strips 1 3/4" x WOF; cut into (64) 1 3/4" x 3"

rectangles.

• 3 strips 2 1/8" x WOF; cut into (32) 2 1/8" squares.

• 6 strips 1 1/2" x WOF for border.

4 1/2 yards of 42" backing fabric • 2 pieces 80" x WOF

OR

2 1/4 yards wide backing fabric • 1 piece 80" x 80"

Batting • 1 piece 80" x 80"

Piecing the Units Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all stitching. Press all seams as directed. Label units with letters given in the steps.

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all 1 3/4" floral squares, all 1 3/4" pink hand dye squares, and all

2 1/8" light green squares.

2. Place a marked pink hand dye square right sides together on 1 end of a 1 3/4" x 3" light green rectangle. Sew

on the drawn line. Trim 1/4" from the stitched seam. Press the triangle open to make 1 Lt Green A border strip.

Repeat to make (8) strips. Repeat to make (8) Lt Green B border strips, changing direction of the diagonal line.

Repeat to make a total of (8) A and (8) B Dark Green border strips using 1 3/4" x 3" dark green rectangles and

referring to the diagrams for diagonal positioning.

3. Sew a Lt Green A border strip to a Dark Green A border strip to make a 3" x 3" A border unit. Press seam to

the Dark Green side. Repeat to make (8) A border units. Repeat with Lt Green and Dark Green B border strips to

make (8) B border units.

4. Place a marked floral square right sides together on 1 end of a 1 3/4" x 3" light green rectangle. Sew on the

drawn line. Trim 1/4" from the stitched seam. Press the triangle open to make 1 Lt Green A sash strip. Repeat to

make (20) strips. Repeat to make (20) Lt Green B sash strips, changing direction of the diagonal line. Repeat to make

a total of (20) A and (20) B Dark Green sash strips using 1 3/4" x 3" dark green rectangles and referring to the

diagrams for diagonal positioning.

5. Sew a Lt Green A sash strip to a Dark Green A sash strip to make a 3" x 3" A sash unit. Press seam to the

Dark Green side. Repeat to make (20) A sash units. Repeat with Lt Green and Dark Green B border strips to make

(20) B sash units.

6. Place a marked 2 1/8" light green square right sides together with a 2 1/8" dark green square. Stitch 1/4" on

each side of the line. Cut on the marked line. Press open with seams to the dark green side to make (2) 1 3/4" x 1 3/4"

triangle units. Repeat to make (64) triangle units.

7. Join 2 triangle units to make a row. Press seam to the dark green side. Repeat to make a second row. Join the

rows to make a 3" x 3" E sash center. Press seam to 1 side. Repeat to make (8) E sash centers. Repeat to make (8) F

sash centers, turning the triangle units in each row as shown.

8. Sew a 1 3/4" x 11 1/2" pink hand dye strip to the sides of the animal squares. Press seams toward the strips.

Stitch the 1 3/4" x 14" pink hand dye strips to the top and bottom to complete (9) 14" x 14" framed panel units. Press

seams toward the strips.

Framed Panel Unit — Make 9

Completing the Quilt Refer to the Exploded Quilt Diagram on the next page as needed throughout the following steps.

1. Sew (2) A border units and (2) B border units alternately together with (3) 3" x 14" pink hand dye rectangles

and (2) 3" pink squares to make the 3" x 56" top row. Press seams toward the border units. Repeat to make the

bottom row.

2. Join (1) B border unit, (1) A border unit, (2) C sash units, (2) D sash units, (2) E sash centers, (2) F sash

centers and (3) 3” x 9” floral print sashing strips to make a 3" x 56" A sashing row. Press seams away from the C and

D sashing units. Repeat to make a total of (2) A sashing rows.

3. In the same manner, and paying attention to the orientation of the units, join (1) A border unit, (1) B border

unit, (2) C sash units, (2) D sash units, (2) E sash centers, (2) F sash centers, and (3) 3" x 9” floral print sashing strips

to make a 3” x 56" B sashing row. Repeat to make a second B sashing row.

4. Sew the remaining 3” x 9” floral print sashing strips with a C sash unit on one end, and a D sash unit on the

other end to make a full sashing strip. Repeat to make a total of 12 full sashing strips. Press seams toward the floral

rectangle.

5. Sew (3) framed panel units together with (4) full sashing strips and (2) 3" x 14" pink hand dye rectangles to

make the 14" x 56" panel row 1, turning every other full sashing strip to change the light and dark green placement as

shown in the diagram. Press seams toward the sashing strips. Repeat to make a panel row 3. Repeat to make panel

row 2, reversing placement of the light and dark green in the sashing strips.

6. Stitch the sashing rows alternately together with the panel rows. Press seams toward the panel rows. Add the

top and bottom rows to complete the 56” x 56” quilt center. Press seams toward the top and bottom rows.

7. Sew the 1 1/2" x WOF light green strips short ends together to make one long strip. Press seams to one side.

Cut into (2) each 56” and 58”. Stitch the 1 1/2" x 56” strips to the sides of the quilt center, and the 1 1/2" x 58” strips

to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press seams toward the strips.

8. Sew the 3” x WOF white print strips short ends together to make one long strip. Press seams to one side.

Cut into (2) each 58” and 63”. Stitch the 3" x 58” strips to the sides of the framed quilt center, and the 3" x 63” strips

to the top and bottom of the framed quilt center. Press seams toward the light green strips.

9. Sew the 1 1/2” x WOF pink hand dye strips short ends together to make one long strip. Press seams to one

side. Cut into (2) each 63” and 65”. Label each pair! Stitch the 1 1/2" x 63” strips to the sides of the framed quilt

center, and the 1 1/2" x 65” strips to the top and bottom of the framed quilt center to complete the quilt top. Press

seams toward the pink strips.

10. If using 42" backing fabric, remove the selvage edges from the backing pieces. Join the pieces on the long

edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press seams open. Trim the edges to make an 80” x 80” backing piece.

11. Layer the top with the backing and batting pieces. Quilt as desired. Trim batting and backing even with the

top.

12. Join the pink hand-dye binding strips on the short ends with diagonal seams to make a long strip. Press seams

in one direction. Press the strip in half along the length with wrong sides together.

13. Bind the quilt edges using your favorite method to complete the quilt.
