    WHO WE ARE

08 13MARINE CORPS COMMUNITY SERVICES // IWAKUNI, JAPAN

This month our community begins returning to our normal routines; school is in session, summer is coming to a close and new residents to the air station are set tling in.

MCCS continues to keep up with the needs of our community and we received some great suggestions wor thy of implementing. The South Side Barber Shop customers have a new awning to shelter them from the weather. We also changed the hours of operation so our customers can get their cuts earlier in the day. New mothers no longer have to run home to nurse their infants; they can now visit the new Nursing Nook, outside of Americable to take care of their child care needs. We also have new fuel pumps on board to replace the Nor th Side fuel dispensers and are working to get them installed in the near future. The new pumps will be able to accommodate credit cards. Additionally we are in the process of purchasing a computer, printer and FA X machine for the Library so our customers can have a Kinkos type service capabilit y. We are always looking for new food concepts including healthier food items. We will be adding salads to the of ferings at the Nor th Side Marine Mart in the new future. As par t of our drive to bet ter our customer service we will be coming out with a customer service survey in all of our activities this month so please let us know how we are doing and what areas we can improve. Your ideas and comments are impor tant to us so please keep them coming.

September 15 - October 15 is designated Hispanic Heritage Month. The United States is a collection of many cultures and we are proud to set aside this month to recognize the contributions and achievements from Hispanic Americans. The month of September hosts several other notable awareness days. September 19 is National POW/MIA Recognition Day; this annual event honors prisoners of war, those missing in action and their families. We also highlight our government's commitment to account for them. Several health awareness campaigns also take place this month, most notable include Cancer Awareness, National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month and National Suicide Prevention Week.

Aboard the air station, MCCS continues to provide great events to keep everyone engaged during their stay in Japan. The highly awaited Summer Music Festival takes place on September 6 at Penny Lake. This all FREE event includes live music, kids land and free food for our air station community. This is a great way to wrap up the summer season and give a special thanks to our service members and their families. As in previous years, we wrap up the evening with a spectacular fireworks display! I encourage our entire air station family to come out and enjoy this event, the fun star ts at 4 PM and fireworks star t at 9:30 PM.

MCCS Iwakuni is a very active member of the Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA). Our annual Boys and Girls Club Day for Kids Event is on September 20 behind Crossroads Food Cour t and is hosted by the Family Care Branch (253-5549). There are great activities for the kids, and some parents have been spot ted joining in the fun! Club Iwakuni (253-3633) is hosting a night to remember with the return of the Murder Mystery Dinner on September 20. This is a chance to get dressed up for a night of great food and socialization with friends, reserve your table and tr y to solve the mystery.

What would a Marine installation be without fitness activities? Semper Fit of fers something for every age. On September 13, join Youth Spor ts in the Opening Ceremony for Soccer (253-5777). On September 16, Health Promotions (253-5051) begins their FIT Girls Boot Camp and on September 21, Athletics hosts our 27th Annual Triathlon (253-5654). Join the competition or cheer on the athletes throughout the month of September. The summer may be over, but the activities keep going with MCCS, Giving our Best for a Bet ter Community.

Music is one of the most popular of liberal arts majors in our time. Sounds created by vibration become emotions created from deep within a listener. There is a health profession today that uses the power of music as an instrument for good. I will get into the aspects of what music therapy is and go to an interview with a soon to be practicing musical therapist, who helps me to answer many questions.

Music therapy has been practiced since World War II to address personal, mental and emotional needs, which may be a shared goal in a group setting, or an individual client's goal.

Kaitlin Emmert, a native of southern Indiana, is a recent graduate from the University of Evansville with a major in Music Therapy, who in October will begin her internship as a music therapist in Cleveland, Ohio. She is proficient in the violin, flute, guitar and familiar with most other instruments.

She says that in certain settings she encourages her clients to pick up their favorite instrument, and either play to the beat of their own drum or play along with a song that was chosen by her, which meets their individual needs. Kaitlin says that music therapists enjoy recording their own tunes with apps and other software, it helps make a more personalized song for her client to feel pride in. These "interactive experiences" are a "guide to personal discovery."

When I asked what a typical session went like Kaitlin said, "We would typically open up with a 'Hello Song' which would be different depending on the client, then we just check in, ask questions, and gauge the music we're going to be playing. Sometimes we will just listen to music and other times the client will play an instrument, and then we will do a closing song, the same one every time chosen specifically for the client."

These practices prove to be effective for all age groups, "Womb to Tomb" and can treat specific maladies such as Alzheimer's, autism, depression, and hospice settings such as a neo-natal department.

Kaitlin says that her preferred environment is a hospice setting, because she enjoys the interactions and feels that the most positive change possible is there.

In closing, music is a powerful medium for emotional guidance. Music Therapists have dedicated their careers to helping others unlock their musical passions. While these are wonderful and worthwhile efforts, no one needs to have their own music therapist to find a song that speaks to them. Just stop, and listen.

How can you begin applying music th

to your life? Step one is to attend the

Everyone from beginners to conditioned athletes can benefit from adding resistance bands/tubes to their current strength training programs. When using resistance bands, the training possibilities are endless. Bands offer constant resistance and users are able to create resistance from all directions and achieve a greater range of motion than with other training modalities such as machines. Now is the time to start getting ready for the Ball!

The resistance band workout outlined below is a perfect complement to the Bodyweight Ball Gown Workout (The Preview, August 2014). Use this circuit in conjunction with the bodyweight movements you learned in the previous issue and you wont only be ball gown ready, you will be a stronger, fitter person overall!
