Look ouT CoSmeTiCS AiSLe, THere Are new, HeALTHier, greener CHoiCeS in Town.

By going green Columnist kellee k. Sikes

Have you let your eyes wander… down the cosmetics aisle lately? Feeling a little trapped by your current product relationships? Let those eyes wander! Likely, you’ll notice a few new-to-St. Louis, environmentally friendly choices to make your skin glow radiantly without needing a future prescription for radiology.

To put your best face (and body) forward keep a keen eye on the label. There are some bad carcinogens on the cos-metics aisle waiting to pickup a hot number like you. For the worst label pickup lines and the reasons to shoot them down, read on.

A cosmetics date is always with your skin, the largest vital organ keeping your body on the go. Skin absorbs the natural and unnatural environment around you, especially the cosmetics you apply.

The Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act identifies anything “applied to the human body...for cleansing, beautifying, promot-ing attractiveness, or altering the appearance” as a cosmetic. Cosmetic products include skin moisturizers, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail polishes, eye and facial makeup preparations, shampoos, permanent waves, hair colors, toothpastes, deodorants, and any material used as a cosmetic product component.

From bad to worse here are the potential dates that should not be part of your body care destiny – clearly you were not made for each other!

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate will get the party started with foaming action in your shampoo, body wash, soap, bubble bath, and other products, but he can irritate or dry skin and strip hair of moisture.

The player on the list is Phthalates. She reels you in with her tantalizing aroma in perfume, cologne, lotion, baby powder, and other products. Although no one is sure how far she’ll go, she has been accused of being an endocrine disruptor particularly in males and a concern for pregnant women.

Toluene may be a smooth and brilliant (nail polish) with a cool disappearing act (nail polish remover) but he’s no standup guy. Previous dates say he’s neurologically and developmentally toxic.

Deet (N,N-diethly-meta-toluamide) has clearly made a “manly” reputation repelling pests buzzing around your good looks, but he also has the ability to make your heart ache (cardiovascular incidents) and your baby ill (infant seizures).

The Paraben brothers, Butly-, Ethyl-, Methyl-, or Propyl-paraben, work to preserve deodorant, shampoo, condi-tioner, makeup, moisturizer, and more. Recently they were caught cheating, hanging out in breast tumors.

Lead Acetate lures you with her ability to gradually disappear the gray in hair color, as she conveniently forgets to tell you she is a known nervous system toxin.

Phenylenediamine, or PPD for short, works his magic to help the color in hair dye take hold. What could also stick is evidence that he is a neurotoxin linked to potential cancer-causing properties.

Resorcinol maybe a quick pick-me-up (hair dye) or a shoulder to cry on (anti-itch cream), but she’s no lady as a toxin to the human immune system and potential cancer agent.

Coal-tar chemicals prefer to date in groups. Going out all dolled up in hair dye and dandruff prevention shampoos causing cancer in animals and raising suspicions as human carcinogens.

As you flirt down the cosmetic aisle considering a new long-term rinse and repeat relationship or just a mud mask fling, remember green alternatives do not include the bad dates above. Read the label– suds don’t equal clean and they certainly aren’t green.

To move beyond this basic primer and learn more about green, healthy choices in the cosmetic aisle visit the Cosmetic Safety Database at cosmeticsdatabase.com or get your hands on a copy of Natural and Organic Hair and Skin Care by Aubrey Hampton. In the mean time, make your dollars vote, buy green.

FAT CATS AnD CorpuLenT CAnineSBy pet Set Columnist Stephanie ernst

By I’ve spent a lot of time in vet’s offices in the last several months, with dogs who have needed a great deal of care. And being in vet’s offices every few weeks has left me sad, not for my own canine friends, but for a great many of the dogs and cats we’ve encountered on these trips. They’ve been there for various reasons, and some have been

very young, whereas others have been very old. But far too many of them have had one thing in common: they were fat. Really fat.

This last year, the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention reported that nearly half of the dogs and cats in the United States are now overweight or obese.

Extra pounds or obesity in a dog or cat is not cute, and it’s not a sign that he or she is “over-loved.” Too much weight can lead to a range of problems: it puts undue stress on your friend’s joints, muscles, and bones and can lead to painful arthritis, sprains, various hip and knee problems, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes.

Because every animal is unique, especially in the case of mixed breeds, there’s no exact ideal weight for your animal. Instead, you have to examine your dog or cat for certain characteristics and consult your veterinarian. Dogs and cats should have a discernible waist, and you should be able to feel their ribs easily. Ask your vet to give you an honest assessment of your dog or cat’s weight.

To maintain healthy weight, make sure your dog is getting daily walks and outdoor exercise, and engage your cats in active play. Check that you’re not giving your companion animals more food than they really need, and talk to a holistic veterinarian or nutritionist about what kind of food you’re feeding them. Also don’t assume that a well-known brand of pet food is healthy just because the packaging says so, just because the word “natural” is featured somewhere, or even just because it’s sold at your veterinarian’s office. Do some research of your own, and talk with holistic vets, nutritionists, or the folks at local stores such as Pets in the City and Four Muddy Paws about what some of your truly healthy options are. All foods are not created equal, and you even have the option of home-cooking from scratch or a base mix.

If you’re still free-feeding, stop. Make the switch to scheduled feedings, and talk with your vet or do some online research about how to make that transition.

Beyond meals, consider what treats you’re feeding your animal friends. For example, for treats, the dogs in this house get a couple baby carrots or a few, small store-bought baked treats made from wholesome vegetables and fruits—and they love them. Time after time, people have looked on with astonishment as I’ve handed Chance baby carrots to munch on. “She likes carrots?” they ask incredulously, as if carrots are an unnatural food for dogs. They’re not. They’re healthy and crunchy, and dogs do like them. Granted, if your dog is trained to eat nothing but junk food, she may resist such healthy treats at first, holding out for what she’s used to, but give her time, and don’t give in.

We love the animals we bring into our homes, and we want them to enjoy lives that are as healthy and long as possible. And feeding your animal friends healthy amounts and healthy types of food instead of junk isn’t depriving them—it’s an act of love, as is acknowledging that you have an overweight animal and working to change that.

When thrown in landfills, televisions are hazardous waste. They contain non-decomposing plastics and dan-gerous toxins such as mercury and lead. More than 4.6 million tons of electronics ended up as hazardous electronic waste (e-waste) in U.S. landfills in 2000 according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

With the recent digital signal conversion that occurred on February 17 of this year, only some of the 3.6 million analog TV owners will upgrade their TVs with a converter box or a cable or satellite subscription service. Other analog, cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs will be replaced by plasma screens or liquid crystal displays (LCD). Landfill CRT TVs are hazardous waste and contaminate soil and water alike. Lead represents 20 percent, or between four and eight pounds, of each CRT TV. When donated, recycled, repaired, or repurposed, electronics move from e-waste in landfills to useful devices or e-scrap, a valuable part of the e-cycle stream. To sustain people and planet, make green choices when purchasing, upgrading, or discarding any electronic device. If donation is not an option, do NOT curb or landfill discard your TV. E-cycle. In some locales (like Missouri) electronics are not legally accepted as trash; e-cycling is mandatory.

TV Components in the E-cycle Stream:• Case = plastics (melted and recycled).• Circuit board = plastics (melted and recycled), metals in the form of transistors, transformers, etc (repurposed or recycled).• Wires = copper (melted and recycled).• Yoke = ceramic cone (ground and recycled), copper (melted and recycled).• Tube = lead in the glass (smeltered and recycled), glass (melted and recycled).

Where to Recycle TVs:

WITS (Web Innovations and Technology Services) is high on my green list as a St. Louis-based not-for-profit, social enterprise recycler with a 0% landfill policy. As president and founder Angela Haas said, “We don’t just recycle electronics we recycle lives. We are full cycle.”

By donating your TV or other electronics through pickup or drop off at WITS, you are helping to provide market-able skills and employment to former offenders, rehabilitation participants, and local students; as well as low-cost electronics to families in need. This last Christmas, WITS donated 100 refurbished computers to local families in need. Even with the small fee to cover hazardous waste processing of donated TVs it’s still a great deal. Each donor receives a tax receipt for fees paid and the value of the donated item. For more information about WITS or their special TV collection on February 7, 2009 visit www.witsinc.org.

Other recycling options:• E-cycle St. Louis, www.ecyclestlouis.org.• Earth 911, www.earth911.com/electronics/electronics-101. Enter the type of item to be recycled and your zip code for a list of local options.• Contact the manufacturer to ask if they have a recycling program.

Did the switch to digital television signals on Feb 17 have you looking for a new TV? Know the facts — don’t be an environmental boob when it comes to buying a new TV or discarding an old television tube.

THinking oF BeComing A vegAn? By veggie voice Columnist Lisa ellis, ph.D.

Whether you need menu ideas to serve a vegan friend at your next dinner party, you want to eat several vegan meals a week for weight loss, or you want to go all out vegan due to compassion for animals, consider me your vegan ambassador! After many years of vegetarianism, I happily put down the cheese over a year ago to

become vegan.

Veganism is showing up everywhere, with more people than ever adopting a lifestyle shared by the likes of talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and Outkast’s Andre Benjamin. The recent explosion of vegan cookbooks, recipe and fashion blogs, and food products makes being vegan easier than ever. However, it’s natural to have lots of questions about veg-anism, so let’s cover some of the basics.

The BasicsYou may be familiar with vegetarianism, which means people do not eat meat, poultry, or fish. Sometimes vegetarians try to simplify the message by explaining they don’t eat “anything with a face.” Some Vegetarians also refrain from animal ingredients in their food such as chicken broth in soup or lard in refried beans.

Veganism is less familiar to many. A vegan diet means not eating animals, and additionally avoiding animal products such as milk, butter, eggs, and honey. Many vegans use as their guiding principle, “how can I minimize animal suffering and make daily choices to live compassionately?”

At this point you may be thinking, “what do vegans eat?” The answer is vegans eat anything we like. Simply put, we eat grains, beans, vegetables, nuts, fruits, and tofu. To truly appreciate the options in vegan cuisine, peruse a cookbook such as Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moscowitz and Terry Hope Romero or visit Vegan Yum Yum, the gorgeously photo-graphed vegan food blog at http://veganyumyum.com.

Now let’s consider why a person would choose a vegan diet. As someone who ate cheese daily just over a year ago, I understand how perplexing this seems. There are many motivations for becoming vegan. Here are three popular rea-sons with a bit of info about each.

HealthResearch indicates that well-balanced vegan diets promote the prevention of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and hyper-tension to name a few potential benefits.Environment

The Observer of Britain reported that The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Nobel Peace Prize winner with Al Gore) urges us to go meat-free one day a week as an effective strategy to combat climate change. Research is mounting on the environmental toll caused by the meat industry.

Compassion for AnimalsMost of us have no idea how animals are treated prior to ending up on our plates. Education on such matters leads many to make personal changes to contribute less to animal suffering. You can read information from the Humane Society of the United States on how factory farms treat animals at www.hsus.org/farm/resources/research/.

Now that we’ve covered basic definitions and a little about the rationale for veganism, let’s talk about one of my favorite aspects, the food! One myth is that vegans eat a malnourished, restricted, lackluster diet. In fact, many vegans experi-ence a greater culinary diversity after becoming vegan. I’ve stretched my boundaries beyond my typical Mexican and Italian fare, not to mention experimenting with exotic spices and cooking with unfamiliar ingredients.

Now it’s your turn. Do you find yourself reading food magazines more often than classical literature? Is your idea of thera-py spending an afternoon in the kitchen cooking up a new dish? Send me your own delicious vegan recipe, and I’ll cook one up to be photographed and featured in the Veggie Voice section of the Vital Voice’s web site and will acknowledge the person who contributed it. Got a question about vegan cooking or living vegan in St. Louis? Email me at [email protected].

peTS in HeAvenBy pet Set Columnist rachel pelizzari

This topic is one that no pet owner wants to approach, but it is a reality we will eventually have to face never-theless. Unfortunately, there will be a time when our pets have aged into their senior years, their bodies are overcome with disease or illness, or their life is cut short by an accident or injury. My intention is to provide

information and resources for when the time comes to say goodbye to our beloved companions and let them pass on.

Before paradise, what do we do? The options that are available are similar to those of humans. In St. Louis there is not an abundance of pet cemeteries, but there are a few. There are also a few crematoriums should a pet owner choose cremation. These establishments interact with the staff at veterinarian offices, since they, too, are part of this painful phase. The fees start at an average of $175 and go up from there based on options added. The pet cemeteries and crematoriums sell caskets, stone monuments, grave markers, urns and boxes (made of wood, brass, marble, ceramic, bronze and much more), jewelry made to contain some of the pet’s cremains, and many other memorial items. Another commonality is that everyone I spoke to at these places was compassionate and aimed to be as comforting as possible. This I appreciated most.

There are pet cemeteries in Fenton, House Springs, Florissant and Valley Park. These properties are beautiful with green grass, tall trees, colorful flowers placed on gravesites and peaceful scenery. All provide 24-hour pick-up service and the option to hold a graveside service with family members. They come to pick up the pet from the owner’s home or veterinarian’s office. Memory Park in Valley Park has six private acres that accommodate 2,500 pets at this time. Friends of Imperial Crown Pet Cemetery in Florissant is known to be the oldest pet cemetery in the area. There is a small chapel area indoors for an open casket viewing and service for each pet. Forest Lawn Pet Cemetery is located in House Springs and depicts a more rural aura. Memory Garden in Fenton shares its property with the owner’s home, her kennel business and a quaint gazebo for pet owners to sit and share a spiri-tual connection with their deceased pet.

The crematoriums I contacted were the ACS (Animal Care Services) in Festus and Heartland in St. Louis City. These also provide 24-hour pick-up service from the pet owner’s home or veterinarian’s office, or the pet owner can bring the pet to the crematorium. With advance notice, the pet owner can watch the process of the cremation if they choose. The remains of the pets are returned in less than a week. The pet owner may have the cremains delivered to their home or veterinarian’s office to be picked up, or they can pick them up directly from the crema-torium. They can then place the plastic bag into the memorial container of their choice and scatter them at the pet’s favorite spot or whatever they want.

Like I said, this is a tough topic to cover. In fact, I cried most of the way through with empathy for those that have gone through the loss of their pet. I am so thankful, though, that there are places in our city that are available to put our pets to rest with dignity and grace. All are committed to aiding us in keeping our pet’s memory alive and know that these are not just pets, but family members. Given these resources and options, I think I will make decisions in advance as to what will be the best way to maintain the memory of my beloved companions.

THe (megA) pHiLoSopHy oF THe pixeLBy gregory Coan

I was a photographer long before I was a computer geek and it has been both a blessing and a curse that the two fields have merged. This article is more of a philosophical explanation of digital camera technology rather than a specific product review, in the hopes it can clear up some of the marketing hype that engulfs the industry.

Historically, film cameras touted their features and their lenses. The most important investment one could make on camera hardware was the lens. This is still true for digital cameras, because it doesn’t matter how many mega-pixels your camera can render--if you’re filtering light through a cheap lens that is what will appear in your photos: soft corners, uneven focusing and bad color reproduction.

Film was (well, is still) sold at different ASA ratings. The lower the number, the finer the grain structure. In a way this can be related to the mega-pixel number on a camera sensor when it comes to print output. For instance, a 100ASA film can be printed much larger than an 800ASA film without the grain structure showing. The same holds true for digital cameras. Obviously a 25MP camera can yield much larger prints than a 5MP camera. If you are going to post most of your photos online, almost any current camera will suffice.

During the last year, the gap between point-and-shoot digital cameras and DSLR cameras has begun to over-lap in that each can make pictures in the 14MP range. For a point-and- shoot camera, this is quite amazing. I bought a Canon 5D DSLR the first year it was released and now there are point and shoot cameras available that yield the same mega-pixels at about 1/10th the price. Naturally, you can’t change lenses on a point-and-shoot, and there is less functionality, but the average consumer has so many good, affordable digital cameras to choose from now.

As a general buying guide you have to ask yourself some questions. The most important is, “Do I really need to have the highest mega pixel camera available today?” Camera manufacturers are in the mega-pixel marketing war but don’t for a minute believe this is the only thing you need in a camera. If you aren’t ever going to print anything larger than 8” x 10” you could live with a really good 8MP camera.

The most important thing on any camera is still the lens. If you need quality options in lenses, you should con-sider a DSLR. You can buy a DSLR body for a reasonable price and then spend good money on quality lenses. Your pictures will be sharp and rich, beyond the quality of any film camera you’ve ever owned.

Of course DSLR’s are bulky, and I love the small point and shoot digital cameras available today. Some of the best lenses are on the Panasonic Lumix line, as the glass is made by legendary camera company Leica. Canon and Nikon also make very nice point and shoot cameras. I suggest you start with and research the name brands before considering a lesser known company because of a lesser price. Most of the time in digital pho-tography, you get what you pay for.

Try to ignore image processing gimmicks that happen in-camera. The thing to remember is the less the cam-era does to your raw image, the more control you will have over it in the end. It’s fun to alter images, but you always want the original in the archive--think of it as you did your old film negatives.

Finally, remember there are plenty of costs beyond the initial purchase price of the camera itself. You will almost immediately have to buy more memory cards for the camera itself. A growing problem with cameras that produce greater than 10MP images is storage. Be prepared to buy extra hard drives or DVD media for backing up all the photos.
