Answer: (Gasp)...CHANGE?!? So goes the old joke. Of course, that’s the thing about the best humor, the stuff that really catches you off guard and makes you laugh; there is an element of truth to it! Most people don’t like change, though it’s unlikely that Lutherans as a group are any less accepting of it than other people. The other side of the coin is that change is inevitable. We are reminded of this as, once again, there is a chill in the air and the leaves are changing color and falling from the trees. It’s a beautiful time of the year but we know what’s coming next. That’s right; Old Man Winter. Ice and snow and heating bills, oh my! Maybe that’s why we don’t take kindly to change. It’s because it’s usually not change for the better. We desire stability, predictability and change reminds us that nothing is permanent. Just when we have our lives all figured out something happens. Something has changed, and so the path must change. A new baby. School. A new job. Good change is still change and it shakes us up a little. Then of course there are the changes for the worse; a new ache, a new medication that your doctor prescribes for you, a new gray hair. These things remind us that we are not permanent but, like everything else in this created order, are passing away. Fortunately, that’s not the end of the story; not even close. I got to thinking about this as I looked at our newly remodeled chancel. Someone observed that the new furniture brightened up the whole area. It certainly is a big change for us, and it serves to remind us of the greatest change that the world could ever know; our salvation through Jesus Christ, who has rescued us from the instability of a fallen world and given us the promise of eternal life with Him permanently. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come (II Cor. 5:17). The fallen world and everyone in it was doomed to eternal damnation. Then Christ came and everything...CHANGED! When we are baptized or when we first hear the Gospel, the Holy Spirit awakens faith and we are...CHANGED! As we grow in this new life in Christ, our priorities, and attitudes toward our situations and toward the people around us is bound to...CHANGE! These are all changes for the better. The change wrought by Jesus leads from instability to stability, from impermanence to permanence. We have the unchanging promise of eternity with our unchanging Lord who even now has promised that He will never leave us nor forsake us.(Heb. 13:5) He has taken us from certain and eternal death to certain and eternal life. That’s certainly change we can, truly, live with. Amen! Vicar John Engwall Inside this issue: Meet our staff: Pastor: Rev. Prince of Peace LCMS, Martinsville, to host Bethlehem Walk, Dec. 9 Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 3496 E. Morgan St., Martinsville, IN, will present its fourth annual Bethlehem Walk on Friday, December 9th from 7:00-10:00 p.m. This expanded, live Nativity will take participants back in time to experience a night like no other—the night our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was born. The evening will begin in the church sanctuary with a short introduction. Guests will then proceed outside to walk through the gates of Bethlehem to confront Roman guards and tax collectors, hear the words of the prophets and wise men, shop at the merchants’ tents, encounter a variety of animals, and visit the inn and the stable. Members of Prince of Peace will serve cookies and hot chocolate in the church fellowship hall following the walk. Tickets for this event, issued in 20-minute increments, are free and may be secured by calling the church office at 765-342-2004, emailing the church at [email protected], or by visiting the church website at www.popmartinsville.org. Please feel free to share this information with your family, friends and co-workers. Bethlehem Walk practice will take place on Sun, Oct 30th, 11:30 am; Sat, Nov 12th @ 5pm and Fri, Dec 2nd @ 6pm.

Board of Evangelism Many times our Boards work unnoticed to make many things happen around our Church. From the minutes of the September Board of Evangelism meeting we learn the Board has set goals and is striving toward those. People involved with the Board of Evangelism are George Parkhurst, Dennis Eickhoff, Rev. Dale Knuteson, Dawn Uebel, Darlene Parkhurst, Vicar Engwall, Pastor Janssen, Penny Rinehart, Rusty Hunt, and Ken Gilenwater. We thank the Board of Evangelism for all they do. If you have any input into any of their goals, please feel free to address a member of the Board.

Some Goals

Signs; Working on signage for property.

Direct Mailing; Every Door Direct Mailing will be used to advertise Bethlehem Walk three weeks before the event. Dale Knuteson and Dawn Uebel will do the cards. Thank you Pastor K and Dawn!

Long Term: LCMS 500th Anniversary of the Reformation; Planning is ongoing.

Grants up to $10,000 are available for evangelism efforts. It was resolved to attempt to secure a grant for next year’s Bethlehem Walk event.

Rediscover Martinsville Adopt a Post. Decorating party will be on 11/19/2016 from 12 pm-3 pm.

THANK YOU BOARD OF EVANGELISM!

Board of Social Ministry Another Board working for POP is the Board of Social Ministry. From their September minutes we learn how this Board is advancing our social ministry.

The Board of Social Ministry is involved with Stability First. This organization makes the opportunity for local citizens to take the steps to get their lives on track.

The Board of Social Ministry helps organize the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive. They will confirm the collection sites as both Wal-Mart doors, Kroger and Rural King.

The Board of Social Ministry decided to donate the food pantry items we had collected to Stability First. Stability First is a central distribution point that can track community wide usage and need. POP will continue to solicit food contributions from our

congregation.

THANK YOU BOARD OF SOCIAL MINISTRY!

From the Elders Corner BY: Bob Yocum

Are You Connected? Are you connected? As Missouri Synod Lutherans we are all connected by our Faith, God’s Word, and Sacrament, but what about just everyday life and the situations that arrive living in this world we share. I ask again are you connected? Many are on social media, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and others and many post questions and comments for your friends to see. Where do you go for a question at Prince of Peace? Who do you contact or see? The answer for some of us is no one, if so you are not connected. For our congregation to thrive, we must always improve. To improve we must be honest with ourselves. Being honest to oneself also means being able to ask for help, support, and prayer when we are bothered or maybe just curious why something is not how we think it should be. Prince of Peace is blessed with many wonderful talented and generous people. Let’s use those talents to answer questions, find solutions, and keep Prince of Peace a light on the path to God’s Kingdom. The Board of Elders is committed to you our members. We have gladly accepted the challenge of being a confident, voice and friend to and for you. We would like to help with your needs, and concerns. Help us make that connection we are missing. We invite you to become connected to this board and allow us to be your go to place for your concerns. I invite you to stop me at church or give me a call or an email. I and the other Elders look forward to hearing from you and being connected to you.

Thanksgiving Dinner

Please join the Board of Parish Fellowship in celebrating Thanksgiving at the annual Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday November 13th, 2016. This just might be your first Thanksgiving meal of the season, and what better way to celebrate and give thanks for your blessings than with your congregation? Another blessing is that this year, the dinner will be catered; so that means that you will not have to prepare anything for this meal! Just purchase your tickets for $5.00 per person, and remember that children 10 and under eat for free! You can purchase tickets at Saturday evening services and before after Sunday morning services in the adult Sunday school room. Please remember that tickets will be required to attend the meal and ticket sales will close on Sunday November 6th. Please don’t miss this great opportunity to give thanks, fellowship with your congregation, and eat a great traditional Thanksgiving dinner! See you there!
