PRINCIPALS MESSAGE As we enter the last two weeks of Lent we prepare ourselves to celebrate the passion of our Lord. At Easter Jesus brings so much light into the world. Light has overcome darkness. The liturgical colour will change from purple to white for Easter to represent this light. During the season of Easter in each classroom a white table cloth will adorn the prayer table. Over the Easter weekend we will celebrate the three holiest days in the church year called Triduum or Three Days.Holy Thursday, we remember how Jesus first gave us himself in the bread and wine of the Eucharist. On Good Friday, we remember the Lords Passion. Jesus died to give us new life. On Holy Saturday, we watch and pray as Jesus passes from death to life and on Easter we rejoice that Christ is Risen! CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK This years Catholic Education Week, April 30-May 5 ,theme is, Walking Forward Together. The 2017 CEW theme and its five sub-themes are drawn from three contemporary Catho- lic documents that address the need for reconciliation and renewal – in our lives, with our families, in our relationships with others and in our relationship with our environment and our common global future. There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week: Day 1: Walking Forward Together with God Day 2: Walking Forward Together with Our Families Day 3: Walking Forward Together with Others Day 4: Walking Forward Together with Creation Day 5: Walking Forward Together in Hope Every year, the Ontario Catholic School TrusteesAssociation (OCSTA) provides our Catholic schools with a resource kit to help schools prepare for Catholic Education Week. Using these resources as well as our own developed activities, we have prepared a series of activities which will highlight how our school is Walking Forward Together. Our librarian has purchased the recommended childrens literature that corresponds to each lesson. The teachers will be using these lessons & books during the month of May. ARTISTS IN THE SCHOOL The Holy Name school community has a strong commitment to living each day in awareness that we are stewards of God's creation, our beautiful Earth. On Friday, March 31 two teams of intermediate students worked with our visiting artists Rob and Anya on producing a 3D art mural to represent this commitment. Upon completion this installation will be mounted outside on the school wall. Venise, Stephanie, Olivia, Ani, Christopher, Jasmyn, Jaedan and Audrey will be working on this project over the next few weeks. We had a great first day of new experiences and accomplishments. We are excited to work towards the completion of this Eco-Art project! Thank you to Ms. Man- ion for co-ordinating this endeavour. EARTH HOUR Eco Club, coor- dinated Earth Hour at Holy Name on Monday, March 27 th . Earth Hour (turning your lights off and not using, your com- puter or watching television) was start- ed as an awareness campaign by the World Wildlife Federation in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Climate change is the biggest environmental threat to our planet. In Canada, we are already seeing its impacts, particularly on our melting Artic ice cap. Some things to think about that could help make a difference in our energy consumption: Every time you open the refrigerator door, up to 30 percent of the cold air can escape. Air-drying dishes in dishwasher can cut a dishwashers energy consumption by 50%. Using lids while cooking reduces energy consumption by up to 14% Take a short shower instead of a long bath. It might take 25 gallons of hot water to fill the bathtub, compared to only seven gallons for a quick shower. Earth Day is fast approaching and more information will be shared at school throughout the month of April. Specific activities will be taking place closer to Earth Day on April 22 nd . FAITH AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT For the month of April our Virtue is JUSTICE. Mr. Cottons Gr. 8 students will lead us in O Canada, morning prayers and create a display about Justice on our main hallway bulletin Board. Thoughts on Justice: 1. LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE On Monday, March 27th, Mr. Cotton’s grade 8 class, along with over 2400 other students, went to the ILITE leadership conference held at the Metro Convention Centre. When we arrived we were greeted by many student volunteers who created a very positive and welcoming environment. First to speak was Orlando Bowen, who spoke about “standing up” for yourself and others. Next was Derek Forgie who was very energetic and grabbed our attention right away. He talked about “speaking up” and the impact that we have on the environment and our role as stewards for the earth. After lunch, to get us moving, there was a fun talent show with lots of dancing and singing. After everyone settled down we had the final speaker, Elizabeth Caraya. She shared her tough journey and talked about “living up”. She taught us that you can overcome anything no matter how difficult something may seem. Overall we felt that this was a great learning experience on how to become a good, supportive and caring leader.

SCIENTISTS IN SCHOOL Ms. Masci’s, Gr. 1/2 class and Ms. Pater-son’s Gr. 2 class, had Scientists in the School this past month. What a wonder-ful experience for the students, volunteers and teachers to be scientists!Scientist Judy, was able to bring to life what ‘adaptation’ means as well as the importance of animal cover-ings to each ani-mal’s surviv-al. They found out what the difference was between hair and fur. Do you know the difference? Animals that have fur have two layers of covering, e.g., cat, dog, but a seal, horse or deer only have 1 layer of hair. Who knew?! And did you know that porcupines really don’t shoot out their needles? The cartoons have it wrong, it is just used for protection and if you look at a needle underneath a microscope, it looks so sharp that it could be metal…. But it is really just, hair? Jahvon found that butterflies had quadrilateral scales. Naomi saw the universe inside the seashell Deanna really understood why fur keeps an animal warm, when doing the ice test. Thank you to CSAC for helping to fund this wonderful experience. SOCIAL NETWORKING & ONLINE SAFETY PARENT PRESENTATION Paul Davis hosted an eye-opening presentation about the dangers of children being online. As an IT [Internet Technology] specialist, Paul has worked extensively with law enforcement and specializes in traveling to schools throughout Canada and the US to provide workshops to parents and students about how to safely navigate social media.

Technology is evolving rapidly and a lot of families are unsure about how to help their children handle it, with many unaware of the risks involved. Paul offered practical tips for how to properly manage our children’s activity, deal with abusive behaviour, spot preda-tors, and avoid making regrettable mistakes. With straight-forward advice and expert insight, his bold and unapologetic seminar is highly recommended for any family that needs a game plan for keeping their children safe online.

SKATING All students Gr. 1-8 set out skating this winter with their class. The skating season was up and down with the weather. Sometimes too warm causing us to cancel, however we did go right to

March 10th. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to tie up laces, assist with supervision and helping students learn to skate.

STUDENT SAFETY Holy Name is an allergen aware school.

There are children in attendance who suffer from a severe and life threatening food allergy to: peanuts (and products that contain them), tree nuts (i.e. almonds, pe-

cans, hazel nuts etc.) EXPOSURE TO THE SMALLEST QUANTITIES CAN CAUSE SEVERE AND LIFE THREATENING REACTIONS. We would appreciate the co-operation of the en-tire school community in NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain pea-nuts or nuts, which could potentially harm a child. ME TO WE One of our local school initiatives is ShareLife. This ties into our Year of Parish. All students and staff are encour-aged to donate a toonie to support ShareLife on April 7th Civvies Day. Our next fundraiser April 7th TCDSB ShareLife Civvies Day

WINTER STATIONS IN THE BEACHES Ms. Masci, Ms. Whyte and Mrs. Schott along with the parent volunteers brought the grade 1’s and 2’s to visit the Winter Stations at the Beaches this past month. The Winter Stations was an architectural competition where companies from around the world submitted designs for the lifeguard chairs, but with a winter compo-nent. Some of the Art Installations that we examined were the Beam, a wooden, cylinder, tower, Message in a Bottle, (by far the class’s favourite) as well as the Puzzle and the Woodchips (not actual names). The students were able to see geometry, structures and different ma-terial used in different ways. Some felt heat in the structures and others en-joyed writing notes, to warm people’s hearts. Violet, simply wrote, “God” in her note. Ethan drew a happy face. It was a beautiful, sunny day and perfect for the TTC ride and walk on the beach. We saw math and science all around us. EXPLORAVISION This year our Gr. 5 & 6 students from the Gifted Program participated in Toshiba Exploravision.
