December/January/February
Dear Northeast High School Parents,
Wow! We were close in the Scholarship Challenge for the student body obtaining 90% E-Free per grade
level during 1st marking period. Only 130 students short; our best performance by our Eagles since the
Challenge began during 3rd marking period of last school year.
Parents, we need your help to get there. Please continue to check your student’s grades every Monday and
make sure they filled out their schedule for extra help during NHS Hour. The matrix of availability for
teachers during NHS Hour can be accessed on northeasthigh.org. Also, if you are able, help start the
“Homework House” in your neighborhoods. Be the place that students can gather and get homework done
after school. If you and your neighbors start a rotation for where an adult can be present and provide the
snacks—kids will come and work together to pass all their classes. Remind students, if they achieve the
Scholarship Challenge they will be the first student body to achieve such high academic success, and they
will be the first student body to be able to wear hats and caps during the school day—remind them to
Make History!
I want to congratulate all students who have made the Honor Roll 1st marking period. If they remain on
the Honor Roll 2nd marking period, we have a nice T-Shirt award waiting for them. This will be a nice
piece of gear to wear during the school day or to come and support all our winter athletes as they begin
their competitions next week.
Lastly, parents, keep a look out for connect ed. messages advertising a Parent University session on
cooking healthy meals. There will be room for 25 people. So grab a friend or spouse and enjoy a cooking
class. It will be first come first serve.
As always, please call the school at 410-437-6400 with any concerns or questions you have about your
student’s academic progress or well-being. Together we will help all our Eagles Rise!

RETURN OF THE EAGLE
The School Counseling Department at Northeast is again sponsoring “Return of the Eagles”. This is a program in which we invite back alumni to speak with our current seniors and juniors about life after high school. Our goal is to encourage our students to take more rigorous courses in high school. In other words, we would like our students to make the most out of their high school experience. We have targeted two days, Wednesday, January 4th or Thursday, January 5th. If you are interested in attending, please call Mrs. Frashure in the School Counseling Office at 410-437-6400. When calling, please let us know which day would be most convenient for you. In addition, we need to know what periods you will be able to cover...1,2,3 or 4th. Naturally, we will give you an outline of topics that could be covered. We hope to hear from you soon.
QUARTERLY EXAMS ARE COMING!
With the January frost comes examination time. Exams are given in each subject area. Senior high students have exams on January 17,18,19 and 20th. As a rule two exams are given on the same day. How do students prepare for exams? Students who have attended school regularly, completed daily homework assignments, and maintained satisfactory grades or better should be well prepared for exams in all classes. Teachers will review the major areas of importance in preparation for the exams. However, there are several other tips that the high school counselors recommend for success on semester exams.
1. Students need to review each subject and organize the materials for each subject BEFORE studying. For example, a student taking U.S. History, would collate all notes, quizzes, tests, maps, etc. in a folder in preparation for studying. This should take place at least one week prior to the exam.
2. Students should determine if they need help in
any subject area BEFORE the exam. In this way “gaps” or a student’s deficiency in the subject can be addressed and help can be obtained. Although this evaluation on one’s competency in a subject area should be ongoing, students need to seek help early in January.
3. A “study plan” needs to be developed for each
subject area. Students need to estimate the amount of study time they will need to prepare adequately for each exam. This plan will vary according to the course content and the student’s evaluation of his/her strengths or weaknesses in the particular course.
4. “Studying” results in better grades when the
student divides the material into meaningful parts and studies the material over several days. Oftentimes, parents can serve as “coaches” for students in asking questions or helping them review out loud.
5. Finally, all students need to plan for adequate
rest during exams. Work schedules may need to be adjusted during this time. A “study plan” is developed and implemented early. Students can avoid “cramming” the night before the exam and then taking the exam in an exhausted state.
REPORT CARDS
Report cards for the first semester will be distributed on Tuesday, January 31st. It is very important at this time to sit down with your child and discuss report card grades with them. Getting good grades on a report card is the perfect opportunity to compliment and praise your child for a job well done. A plan jointly developed with your child must be implemented to address a report card with failing grades. Your teen should have a plan to improve grades. Here is an outline to help your teen develop a plan:
SCHEDULE CHANGES FOR SECOND SEMESTER
Request for changes in courses for second semester may be granted only if one or more of the following criteria is met: 1. Seniors needing a class for graduation. 2. Failure in a pre-requisite course. 3. Course was previously passed.
NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE
Members of the Class of 2017 who hope to play Division I or II athletics need to process a form for the Clearinghouse. The NCAA application can be accessed from the Website using www.ncaaclearinghouse.net and should be submitted promptly providing that the student has taken the SAT I or the ACT at least once.
TRANSCRIPTS
Seniors requiring transcripts for college applications or scholarships, must have a transcript form, signed by a parent, on file in the School Counseling Office. Each transcript is $2.00. Seniors, please allow enough time for a recommendation and transcript to be processed. At least three days notice should be given to the counselors and Mrs. Conner to have these forms ready.
SENIOR STARS
Seniors, please let us share in the excitement of post graduation plans and/or scholarship awards. Share with us your plans for after graduation on the morning announcements.
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SCHOLARS
Scholarships for Scholars provides outstanding scholarship opportunities. The program was established by the Anne Arundel County Board of Education in 1983 for the purpose of awarding scholarships to senior scholars attending private and public secondary schools in Anne Arundel County. The scholarships are awarded in May to high school seniors who have “demonstrated exceptional abilities” in the following areas: Business Technology, Family and Consumer Science, English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Art, Drama, Music, Career and Technology Education. Also, scholarship opportunities in this program exist for students who have contributed to their school and county-at-large through volunteerism or civic leadership in community activities. APPLICATIONS FOR SCHOLARLSHIPS FOR SCHOLARS ARE AVAILABLE ON LINE THIS YEAR. Mr. Markowski will provide more details to our students soon. The student deadline is February 2nd.
SENIOR REMIND 101 This year the School Counseling Department is going to utilize Remind 101 to text messages directly to your phone. Our goal is to ease communication. We will use this to send reminders about scholarships, college deadlines, and senior information. Please join us by texting the following message: @27e7fd to 81010. Once you have sent the message, you will be asked to reply with your name. Trouble using 81010? Try texting @27e7fd to 443-470-8813 instead.
.
SCHEDULING FOR 2017/2018
Beginning in January, your student will start to select their classes for next year. Scheduling is a very important process. Students should take a rigorous series of classes that they can remain successful in. Rigor and grades are the two most important factors in college admissions. From a school standpoint, we schedule the building based on student course requests. Please take the scheduling process seriously. Scheduling Timeline: January 17-20: Teachers will meet with students and make their recommendations. January 30th (tentative): Students take home course selection sheets with teacher recommendations so they can discuss course selection with parents. Scheduling Night. Come learn about various courses, including AP classes. February 1st: Course selection sheets returned to school with parent signature. February: School Counselors meet with students individually to finalize course selection. April: Final course selection sheets are distributed for parents to review and determine any final course changes
ACCUPLACER TESTING
Seniors and all students that applied to Anne Arundel Community College in October, the next step in the admission process is to take the ACCUPLACER exam or submit acceptable SAT/ACT scores. The Accuplacer will be given at Northeast on February 17th. You will receive a pass with a specific test time. Begin to prepare now! See your school counselor for details.

Important Information
for Parents
Inclement Weather Closings
The Board of Education unanimously approved changes in the 2016-2017 school year that clearly address
the handling of inclement weather closings and allow parents to make plans for Easter/Spring break and summer
vacations.
The calendar has five days built in at the end of the school year for emergency closings, making the school
year 186 student days and 196 teacher days. If any of the five emergency days are not used, they shall be deducted
from the June closing date. If more than five additional makeup days are needed:
Monday, April 17, mayy be used as a potential makeup day.
Additional inclement weather closing after April 17th, and any days needed beyond six, will be added onto
the end of the school year.
If emergency closings affect the end of any marking period, the calendar will be adjusted and the marking
period extended so that both early dismissal days occur at the end of the marking period. This applies to all
schools.

INTERACT CLUB NEWS The Interact Club is completing a very important state project. For those of you who are not familiar with
Interact it is a school based community, state, and international service club. We are chartered through the
Lake Shore Rotarians. Our club has chosen as one of our projects to give to THE BLUE RIBBON
Project. This project is one that is very important to our club. The organization helps young kids from
battered families that are removed due to the abusive conditions within their homes. The kids range in age
from infant to teens. We are reaching out to all of you to see if you could help us in any way. We need
many, many items for this and we would appreciate any assistance at all for our project.
We will be putting up a tree in the office or lobby with labels on them for the items we need. We are also
looking for anyone that has a tree or two (artificial) that we could use to hang our tags. Please help in any
way possible.
Anything you can do is wonderful. All of us are blessed in so many ways we sometimes forget, especially
during the holidays, that some babies are just trying to survive.

Yearbook Senior Ads Dear Senior Family and Friends,
Senior year is an incredibly special time in your life as well as your senior’s. What better way to say so than a personal ad in the Northeast High School yearbook? We invite you to take the opportunity to share your feelings on this milestone year in your child’s life with a personal ad that your child will treasure forever. Whether you want to share those wonderful growing-up years, a special academic or athletic accomplishment, and / or the sentiments of family and friends, placing an ad in this year’s yearbook will allow you to create a lasting memento of your love for and pride in your child.
A personal ad in the yearbook allows you to recognize your student with photos, written sentiments, or both and lets your student remember all the important people and happenings. A personal ad puts a personal touch on a book that will be cherished for years.
This year, purchasing an ad is easier than ever. You can create online or mail your materials to Jostens to build your ad for you. Create your own ad by going to www.JostensAdService.com and following the onscreen directions. Or watch your mail for a Senior Ad Order Form that you may use to mail in materials and payment. Northeast High School Yearbook Staff reserves the right to edit ads per our guidelines. Please make sure that all submitted materials are appropriate for school publication. For further assistance call Jostens Ad Service at 1-800-358-0800 or contact Jostens at www.JostensAdService.com or email Monica Lynch at [email protected].

The evidence is consistent, positive, and convincing: families have a major influence on their children’s achievement. When schools, families, and community groups work together to support learning, children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer, and like school more.” Anne T. Henderson, Karen L. Mapp

December Celebrations ofFaith, Family & Community
Did you know that four great religious and cultural traditions will be celebrated throughout the United States this month? While each is unique, all four focus on family and community gatherings, where special foods, music, decorations, prayers and readings are shared. Each tradition emphasizes love of family and community, and charity to those less fortunate. Learn more about these rich traditions with your children by visiting your public library, researching on-line, or by visiting others’ holiday celebrations.
A Peek at EachDecember 11 (sundown) – December 12 (sundown): Maulid al-Nabi, when many Muslims gather to honor the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, born in 570, by recalling his teachings of empathy, forgiveness and charity.
December 24 (sundown) – January 1 (sundown): Hanukkah, the Jewish eight-day “Festival of Lights” that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.
December 25th: Christmas, the Christian celebration of Jesus’s birth with gift exchanges and prayers for World Peace and unity.
December 26 – January 1: Kwanzaa is the week-long African-American celebration of family, community, and gratitude for the earth’s bounty.
Bullying and bias behavior have no place in positive school environments. Help to ensure that your and all children feel safe, secure, and valued at school. Listen to your child and support his efforts to act confidently and respectfully with peers. AACPS has programs that can help. Contact members of your school’s Student Services Team and visit AACPS Safe & Orderly Schools for more information.
Don't over-schedule your family. Create cards, decorations, cookies and gifts. Stay physically active and play outdoors. Maintain bedtime and other routines. Practice compassion and generosity at home and
for others. Encourage appreciation and gratitude for
kindness from others. Give loads of hugs and words of love .
