With our own on site laboratory and highly qualified personnel, we have developed LED fittings that are highly efficient, reliable and of high quality.Our close collaboration with the best lED manufacturers (CREE, CITIZEN, SEOUL, LUMILEDS and OSRAM), has combined with our expertise in the world of lighting fittings, enabling innovative solutions in terms of optical and thermal performance to be developed.The use of LEDs in the Performance in Lighting fittings has required research and development into new areas alongside electronics, which has resulted in the creation of efficient and reliable lighting fittings, as is the tradition of the Group.

What iS a lED?WaS iSt EinE lED?z A lED (light Emitting Diode) is an electronic component with a “P-N” semiconductor junction which, if a current passes through it, can emit photons in the form of light radiation. This phenomenon is called electroluminescence.Depending on the type of construction of the LED board, it can operate with either constant current or constant voltage.

z Whilst for fittings with traditional light sources, we speak about performance, for fittings with LED light sources, we use the term luminous efficacy, which indicates the ratio between the power absorbed and the amount of light emitted by the lighting fitting. Luminous efficacy is expressed in lumens/W (lm/W).An incandescent lamp has a luminous efficacy of 13-15 lm/W, while for a fluorescent lamp it is 60-70 lm/W and a gas discharge lamp 100-110 lm/W.The current luminous efficacy of a LED chip is approximately 130 lm/W, but as it is a source that is constantly evolving, we can still expect ongoing, significant improvement.

z Während man bei Leuchten mit traditionellen Lichtquellen von Leistung spricht, wird für Leuchten mit LED der Begriff Lichtausbeute verwendet, der den Quotient aus dem von einer lampe abgegebenen lichtstrom und der von ihr aufgenommenen leistung angibt. z The luminous efficacy used to describe the LED board is measured in optimum operating conditions, without the constraints that inserting a lighting fitting inevitably involves. In fact, even in the presence of correct heat dissipation, we nevertheless experience a loss of output of 6-10% (poor dissipation can result in a loss of output of 50% and a reduction in the duration of the LEDs).Excessive temperature also affects the correct operation and durability of the driver, and leads to a reduction in the output of about 15%.If the LED light source requires an optic, we should expect a further decrease in output of 10-15%.In addition, LED manufacturers tend to highlight the luminous efficacy obtained with LEDs with cool colour temperatures, but warm tones cause a further drop in output of 10%.

z Die für die LED angegebene Lichtausbeute wird bei optimalen Betriebsbedingungen gemessen, ohne Berücksichtigung der Einflüsse, die das Einsetzen in eine Lampe unumgänglich mit sich bringt. z In order to work with electrical and thermal parameters that safeguard its durability, the LED must have proper heat dissipation. Active or passive dissipation mechanisms must therefore be in place to ensure it is possible to extract the heat and then disperse into the fitting or surrounding environment as uniformly as possible. The correct thermal operating regime is achieved by developing supports with suitable dissipating geometries according to the type of LED, the material used, the fitting, the assembly position and its level of seal.The long-established on-site Performance in Lighting laboratory has been testing, researching and evolving in the field of electro-thermal LED measurements for ten years, with internal test protocols that go beyond the normal standards prescribed in the regulations.

z Damit die LED mit elektrischen und thermischen Parametern funktionieren kann, um eine lange Lebensdauer zu erhalten, muss sie über eine korrekte wärmeableitung verfügen. z In order to achieve good heat dissipation, it is necessary to provide optimal conditions for coupling and heat transfer between the LED board and the heat sink itself.For this reason, Performance in Lighting LED fittings are equipped with specific thermal interfaces, known as gap fillers, positioned between the LED board and the heat sink device, to ensure perfect, continuous thermal contact between the two components.These gap fillers may be made using different materials and technologies according to the different thermal regimes, the nature of the materials and the environment in which the fitting is installed.Excessive temperatures have a negative effect on the duration of the LEDs, but also on electrical parameters such as the emitted wavelength, the colour temperature (CCT) of the LED, the direct voltage drop (Vf = Forward voltage) and its efficiency.To overcome this problem, the thermal resistance between the junction and the outside of the container must be as low as possible. For this reason, Performance In Lighting uses high-tech thermal interfaces, such as graphite or phase change material (PCTIM- Phase Change Thermal Interface Material).This is a special film interposed between the LED board and the heat sink which, once the operating temperature, has been reached, changes state (from solid to viscous), enabling perfect filling of all imperfections on the surface on which it rests. This therefore eliminates harmful “air bubbles”, typical of thermally conductive pastes, and the difficulties of applying the thermally conductive double-sided adhesive (a fingerprint on the double-sided adhesive compromises the effectiveness by more than 20%).

Both types, depending on their characteristics, can be integrated into a particular design or optic designed for a specific purpose.These narrow or wide beam optics consequently modify the beam of light emitted, unless action is taken by designing an optic to achieve asymmetric beams that perform many different tasks (street lighting, wall-washer...) Each photometric curve released is the result of photometric surveys and analysis carried out in the PIL Group photometric laboratories, equipped with two “T2” and one “moving head” goniophotometers.

Cool white shade(cool white: > 5,000 K)This is particularly suitable for outdoor applications, for high flux and high brilliance.

warm white shade (warm white: < 3,300 K)This is a comfortable warm light which, by mimicking the emission of the incandescence, adapts to indoor environments.

Neutral white shade (neutral white: 3,300/5,000 K)This is the right balance between brightness, tone and colour rendering, often required when adding to or combining with existing light sources.

lED light is nevertheless always free of ultraviolet or infrared emissions: ensures high colour rendering and does not cause colour change on the illuminated element. The place, the object to be illuminated or enhanced, the way in which the light is diffused and the desired result naturally have a direct impact on the type of light to be used.

Die lED-lampe ist in jedem fall frei von ultraviolett- oder ultraschallstrahlungen: sie gestattet daher eine ausgezeichnete Farbwiedergabe ohne Veränderung der Farbe im Leuchtelement. Natürlich beeinflussen der Ort, das zu beleuchtende oder hervorzuhebende Objekt oder die Art der Lichtverbreitung direkt das zu verwendende Licht.
