BOOK READING

Book Reading (Night Group)

We all felt Jane Austen would not have been impressed with the updated version of Northanger Abbey by Val McDermaid written in 2014. Instead of setting it in Bath, McDermaid has used Edinburgh at Festival time, which perhaps gives the story more substance, but the heroine remains the same giddy, fantasising teenager about whom there is a little too much to read.. Not our favourite book.

.Val Reid & Lyn Crosbie

Book Reading (Day Group)

For our first book we read ‘Jasper Jones’ about an Australian small country town where bigotry courage and racism were rife, illustrating how friendships were often tested and illusions lost. Was an interesting first book choice which most of us really enjoyed. Next meeting at Carole English on 22

nd

September. Joan Planck

The doorbell rang and the lady of the house discovered a workman, complete with tool chest, on the front porch. “Madam,” he announced, “I’m the piano tuner.” The lady exclaimed, ‘Why I didn’t send for a piano tuner.” The man replied, “I know you didn’t but your neighbours did.” An editor is a person employed on a newspaper whose business it is to separate the wheat from the chaff, and to see that the chaff is printed. GETAWAY

Point Lonsdale and Blues Train Getaway Saturday 20th August thirty eight members arrived at Point Lonsdale Guest House, our plan was to relax until it was time to meet in the dining room for our pre dinner nibbles. At 6.00 the first of our group were transported by mini bus to Queenscliff, when we had all arrived at the station, dinner was served, our group were lucky to be called first, after getting our meal we sat on the train, with it on a tray on our knee, (that was a bit of a shock). All drinks were available for purchase at the stations. After the train getting underway the music started, in the first carriage the entertainer was oh so very loud, the next two carriages were not so loud, and good artists to entertain us. Not sure if this comment is correct? Maybe we were all a bit deaf after the first carriage.

Sunday Morning after a hearty breakfast sightseeing was the order for the day. Tours of the lighthouse, also the fort, a viewing tower 40m high at the new marina area, others enjoyed a drive to Torquay for a look around at the development in this area.

Gathering at 4.30 for Happy Hour back at the guest house we had all enjoyed our day, then a game of trivia, a B.B.Q dinner, or some had fish and chips. Home on Monday after breakfast. Another great time withfellow members. Thank you all for supporting this Getaway. Lyn Hudgson

Pat and Kyran were getting ready to go on a camping trip. The first one said “I I’m taking along a gallon of whiskey just in case of rattlesnake bites. What are you taking?” The other one said “Two rattlesnakes!” Two farmers are driving their tractor down the middle of a country road. A car comes around the corner, brakes hard to avoid them, skids, tumbles twice and lands in a field. Jimmy says to Eamonn, “It’s just as well we got out of that field.” A Texan rancher goes to Ireland and meets a Kerry farmer. The Texan says: “Takes me a whole day to drive from one side of my ranch to the other.” The Kerry farmer says: “Ah sure, I know, sir. We have tractors like that over here too.”

THEATRE.

A Streetcar Named Desire: Heidelberg Theatre, Saturday 24

th September at 2.00pm.

Tickets $22.00 Blanche Dubois, raised in the elegant world of a Southern plantation, comes to stay with her younger sister, Stella Kowalski and husband Stanley in a crowded New Orleans’ apartment. Stanley’s brutish and tormenting behaviour threatens to shatter Blanche’s fragile sense of self and to destroy her last chance of happiness. Widely considered one of the greatest American plays, A Streetcar Named Desire won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Best Play in 1948. The 1951 film adaptation starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh won four Academy Awards and is regarded as an American classic. Tickets will be distributed at our September meeting. Yes Prime Minister: Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre, Sunday 6

th November at 2.00pm. Tickets $20.00

The UK is in crisis: debt is spiralling, unemployment is on the rise and the fragile coalition government, led by Prime Minister Jim Hacker, is at breaking point. But salvation may exist in the form of a complex pipeline deal with the oil-rich country of Kumranistan that would entitle the government to a multi-trillion pound loan. When the Kumranistan Foreign Secretary makes a shocking request of Jim’s Private Secretary Bernard Woolley, moral considerations collide with the economic future of the nation. Political machinations, media manipulation and an appeal for divine intervention ensue. Please put your name down at our September meeting and pay at our October meeting. One Man, Two Guvnors: Heidelberg Theatre, Friday 2

nd December at 8.00pm. Tickets $22.00

One easily-confused and ever-ravenous Francis Henshall finds himself a minder of two men, a gangster and a criminal in hiding, both of whom are linked in a web of schemes, extortions and romantic associations. To prevent discovery Francis must keep his two guvnors apart at all costs. But it’s tricky. Mistaken identities, cross dressing and multiple mishaps soon coalesce to engulf him in pandemonium. This internationally-acclaimed smash hit is a glorious celebration of British comedy. It has a wonderful mix of satire, slapstick and witty one liners. Please put your name down at our September

meeting and pay at our November meeting.

Men’s Health

Tuesday September 20th

at 7-30pm to 9-30pm Westfield Drive Uniting Church Doncaster

A Men’s Health night has been arranged. Attendance is for men and boys of all ages.

We are privileged to have one of Victoria’s leading Doctors to present this evening.

Dr Andrew Pattison OAM, MB BS, FRACGP, D.Obst.RCOG is one of the principals in the East Ivanhoe Medical Clinic. A graduate of the University of Melbourne, he has been in general practice almost 38 years, and is among Melbourne’s most highly regarded general practitioners.

Dr Pattison became an author in the 1980s when he wrote the Doctor Toby children’s books, aimed at helping children understanding illness and the role of the family doctor.

These led to a regular spot on 3AW’s Neil Mitchell program and a weekly column in THE AGE. Following this came a new development in his educational roles. Around the time when he wrote the Doctor Toby books, he became very interested in men’s health and wrote another book “The M Factor Men and Their Health”. In consequence Andrew has been in great demand by corporations and on oil rigs to address men on the topic.

“It has been very satisfying”, to Andrew, “to see that the pendulum is starting to shift a little and men/boys are now considering their health by having general check-ups, and not feeling embarrassed about being there.

Andrew will be encouraging relevant questions from the audience at any time.

Dr Pattison is a parishioner at St Bede’s, Balwyn North, is married to Carolyn and has three children and three grandchildren.

Fellow Probians: This is an interest article from my latest issue of ‘This England’ - John Mugridge Probing Probus Clubs Centenarian, Joe Rawlings, had a narrow escape 75 years ago. Living at Aspatria, in the north of the Lake District, he had just qualified as a schoolmaster when he was called up. Opting for a large ship in the Royal Navy he was summoned to Portsmouth so undertook a 400-mile train journey. Wartime travel was slow, however, and he arrived just in time to see his battle cruiser, HMS Hood, steam out of port. He was distraught, but only a few weeks later just three of her crew of 1,000 survived the sinking by the German battleship Bismarck. Joe later became an officer on the Arctic Convoys and after hostilities ceased went back to teaching, retiring during the Seventies as a headmaster in Carlisle. In 1980 he became a founder member of the Border City Probus Club there, saying he liked the small number of rules and the opportunity to meet new people in a relaxed atmosphere. "Everybody talks to one another and you're made to feel welcome." The national Probus magazine recently challenged any club to find an active member older than 103 but they struggled.

Initially linked closely to Rotary Clubs, Probus takes its name from PROfessional and BUSiness with the Latin word "probus" meaning honest or virtuous, from which the English word "probity" is derived. Providing fellowship for retired professional and businessmen, clubs meet monthly to foster friendship. The first use of the name is credited to Harold Blanchard in the mid-Sixties at Caterham in Surrey, although a similar offshoot from Rotary called the Campus Club had been formed a little earlier in Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire. Within five years there were 150 Probus Clubs spread across the country and the idea was quickly exported to much of the English-speaking world.

In those days Rotary was thriving because men could easily take a long lunch hour, but increased pressure at work has since made recruitment more difficult. As a result Rotarians have been allowed to retain their membership after retirement. In consequence there is no longer a natural progression from Rotary to Probus which now has to actively hunt for new recruits.

Recent research by the University of Queensland shows that being a regular member of a social group after retirement helps people feel better and live longer. The results indicate this is comparable to the beneficial effects of physical activity, and Anna Dixon, chief executive of the Centre for Ageing Better, said: "Social connections are just as important as money and health to a good later life. They help some people to overcome disadvantages."

The main aim during my year as President of the Border City Probus Club was to lower the age profile and with a combination of newspaper articles, colour leaflets and BBC Local Radio, membership increased by 40 per cent. We now include a submariner, academic economist, archdeacon and someone who claimed to have been the most popular railwayman in the country for a few weeks each year because, as stationmaster at Ascot, he was given a batch of tickets to the Royal Enclosure.

Probus clubs are autonomous but many develop links within the network, sharing ideas for speakers and interesting outings. We also welcome those who have been members of other Probus Clubs, like 85-year-old Bob Bellmont, who has been all round the country and commented "I particularly enjoy the outings to local places of interest and I'm glad one has the freedom to attend as often or as little as one wishes, all with no sense of obligation."

There is a Cornish village called Probus, famous for having the tallest church tower in the county, dedicated to St. Probus and St. Grace. Naturally it boasts the Probus Club of Probus, and the two local saints would be delighted to know there is also a Probus Club grace:

Happy the man who meets each month With friends from near and far. Happy the man who friendship seals Beside a friendly bar. Happy the man who shares his food Amongst old Probus mates, Happy the man who to kind ears, Sorrows and joys relates. Happy are they who praise the Lord, From whom all blessings flow. Happiest of all are they whose hearts His love unending know. Amen.

There are now in excess of 2,000 Probus clubs in the UK and a further 2,000 abroad, with a total membership exceeding 300,000. NIGEL HOLMES
