OUR SPEAKERSSeptember’s Speaker

September 19th, 2017 - Kyle Brough

The Borelians Community Theatre in Port Perry

Kyle Brough has been actively involved in the local theatre scene for 25 years, starting out backstage building and painting sets with the Borelians. After completing a BA in Theatre Directing at York University, Kyle worked and lived in Toronto for several years directing plays for the Toronto Fringe Festival and

Artword Theatre, all the while supporting his theatre life by managing bookstores for Chapter/Indigo. In 2010, Kyle received his Library Technician’s diploma from Seneca College and soon found himself back in Port Perry working at Scugog Memorial Public Library where he teaches technology and takes great pride in being the Teen and Adult Programs Co-ordinator. Currently he sits on the board of directors for Borelians Community Theatre and Town Hall 1873 Centre for the Performing Arts. He has recently produced the plays “August: Osage County”, “Having Hope at Home” and “The Drawer Boy” which won Best Drama at the ACT-CO awards in 2014. Kyle is very passionate about community theatre and the cultural role it plays. He hopes to shine a bright spotlight on the incredible talent that resides in Port Perry.

October’s SpeakerOctober 17th, 2017 - Marjorie Mason

Successful Gardening in Port Perry and Garden Tours

Marjorie Mason is an enthusiastic gardener who enjoys sharing her ideas with others. She started gardening at a very early age on her parents’ market garden farm near Peterborough. During the winter of 1987, Marjorie purchased a property south of Uxbridge which is now Mason House Gardens – a retail plant centre and display garden. Marjorie has a passion for gardening in containers and was instrumental in promoting the concept of B.C. style moss baskets in Ontario. She is now advocating the use of houseplants, bulbs, edibles and perennials in pots as well. She uses the term “Potscaping” to describe the grouping together of containers into pleasing arrangements.Marjorie lectures across Canada and the U.S. on a variety of topics. In addition to authoring “Amazing Annuals” in 1999, she has written articles for Canadian Living, Canadian Gardening, Harrowsmith, Canadian Wildlife Federation, and Landscape Ontario magazines. In 1990, she was given the Garden Communicator of the Year Award by Landscape Ontario.Marjorie has traveled extensively, hosting garden tours since 1985.Visit website www.masonhousegardens.com for details about future garden tours.

PROBUS INTEREST GROUPSWe’re looking for interest group coordinators. We’ve got a lot of interest particularly in the groups noted below that have not yet been started. • Investment Group• Wine Tasting Group• Wine Making Group• Scotch/Whiskey/Beer Tasting Group• Cultural Event Group (movies, museums, galleries, concerts)

We have also had some interest recently expressed in a men’s breakfast club.

So if you would like to participate in any of the above groups, please let Tim Casey know.

And if you would be prepared to coordinate or co-coordinate any of the above groups, please let Tim Casey know at [email protected] or 647-521-2565. Tim will help you contact the interested members, advertise the group to the membership and get the group going. You don’t have to be an expert in the area, only someone who has an interest in it and a willingness to help organize the group. All we need are some volunteers. This is a great way to meet new friends and support your fellow members at the same time. And it’s actually not that much work nor does it take much time.

A couple of potential groups are looking for enough members to start up a group. So if you’re interested in Poker or a regular Music Jam, please contact the individuals below.

Poker - Norm Sanford  [email protected];  905-441-1490

Music Jam - Bill Walker [email protected];  905-985-9673

We have a lot of long-standing interest in getting a theatre interest group going in order to go to various theatrical shows locally in Durham and other nearby areas, in Toronto and perhaps farther afield (e.g. Niagara on the Lake, Stratford, Kingston, etc.) and to socialize at the same time. These are some of the most popular groups in other PROBUS clubs. Janet and Tim Casey are prepared to try to get the group underway, but we’ll need one or two co-coordinators to help out.

In addition, we would be quite interested in seeing if other club members might be willing to do what Bob McLeod recently did regarding a theatre event. While he didn’t want to take on the full role of the theatre group coordinator, he approached us to volunteer to take on responsibility for organizing an event, namely the Anne of Green Gables musical at Oshawa Little Theatre in Oshawa. So if we had a few more members do that for a production they would love to see with others, that would essentially create a theatre group. So if you have an interest in seeing theatre productions and helping out with some organizing, please contact Tim at [email protected] or 647-521-2565.

One thing that’s great about our PROBUS interest groups is their flexibility. Some have largely the same people attend each meeting while others see some new faces at every meeting. Some groups suspend operations during the winter due to weather or Snowbirds heading out of town. Others see people attending more during

the summer while at the same time some other group members head off to the cottage. Some go from a few members attending a session to many attending another session in the space of a month or two. There’s no required attendance for anyone. Group members attend as they wish, and we ask only that they RSVP to emails announcing the time and place so the coordinator can know how many people to expect at a meeting. You can join as many interest groups as you want, and most of them have no cost to participate. It’s fun, you meet new friends and you’ll definitely encounter new experiences. We’re looking forward to seeing you at some of our many interest groups this year.

ACTING FOR FUN - Evelyn McKenzie [email protected] 905 985 2587

This recently formed group has about 6 members and has room for about 2 more. The group will be learning about acting and theatre productions in its meetings which are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month.

BEGINNERS BRIDGE - Judy Anderson [email protected] 905 985 8719The beginners bridge group has spent the last several months learning the basics of this game based on the ACBL guidelines. Our group is made up of players who are new to the game and those returning after a few years who want to refresh themselves with the more current rules.

We get together on a weekly basis at various members’ homes. It's a fun and relaxed group, and we do a shuffle and play format now that the basics have been learned. There's always lots of discussion at the table especially when the hands are more unusual.

BOARD GAMES - Jenny Yorgason [email protected] 905 986 5441 and Bill Morrison [email protected] 905 439 0484.

The Board Games Group usually meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month. The group typically has four to six members at each session held in the home of one of the group members. Among the games played so far have been Sequence and Mexican Train, and even players new to board games have found it quite fun learning the new games.

BOOK CLUB - Suzanne Redford [email protected] 416 573 0597The Book Club is going well.  There is room for some new members if anyone wants to join.

BREAKFAST CLUBS - Mary-Anne Unwin [email protected] 905 986 4078All Breakfast Clubs aim to have at least 6 members attend a breakfast once a month and enjoy pleasant conversation and company. The choice of restaurant will vary.

The Thursday Breakfast Club, which meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month, with the occasional exception, is able to accept 1 (or 2 if a couple) new members. To join, contact the coordinator. The Tuesday Breakfast Club (4th Tuesday of each month) is currently full, but if interested in joining, please leave your name with the coordinator, Mary-Anne Unwin ([email protected] or 905-986-4078) so that you can be contacted as soon as there is an opening. Venues will vary from month to month and members usually meet around 9:30 AM.

Members are requested that they record future meeting dates provided and RSVP to the email notice they are sent a few days prior to their next Breakfast meeting in order to provide accurate numbers for the reservation.

NOTE - in the case of all Interest Groups, if you have questions or wish to join, please contact the Coordinator

CARDS – HAND & FOOT Hand and Foot is a card game similar to Canasta. It’s very easy to learn. New members typically catch on after playing only one hand. While it is a simple game, it has enough variety within it to keep it interesting. It’s also a game that can be played with 2 to 6 players. That allows the group to play quite frequently whether or not the entire group is available. There are some members who have shown up every week, but others

The Cards – Hand & Foot interest group is presently in the process of re-organizing. More information will be available about the group in the near future on the website and in future newsletters.

EUCHRE – AFTERNOON - Ann Berube [email protected] 905 985 7102Members of the Afternoon Euchre Group, which meets every second Friday, have been enjoying themselves so much playing Regular Euchre and socializing, improving their game and knowledge of each other all the time, that some have decided to start a spin-off Afternoon Bid Euchre Game.

EUCHRE – EVENING - Margaret Adamson [email protected] 905 773 2878

This group continues to have had good attendance at our games. However, the numbers could accommodate a few more people, as for different reasons we do not always have the full group.

New members do not need to know how to play euchre - our experienced players have been great teachers to some of our existing group. We have found that hosting in our homes has worked well for everyone. Time for dedicated card games, followed by relaxed socializing has evolved into the enjoyed format.

NEXT GAME: Hosted by Carole and Dave Matthews on September 19th - 7:00 p.m.FUTURE HOSTS: October (Phil and Becky West); November (Carolyn Padley)

BID EUCHRE - Jayne Rees - [email protected] or Ann Berube - [email protected] Euchre games would be played on alternate Fridays at 1:00 p.m. Group members would take turns hosting each fortnight, at their own homes or elsewhere. If you are interested in joining this group, or have questions, please contact one of the Coordinators.

GOLF - Terry Conley ([email protected]  905 852 4997)We are golfing at Sunnybrae Golf Club.

We have a list of 12 potential golfers, with normally 7 or 8 teeing off every other Thursday. What we lack in quantity, we make up in quality. I’m now describing the people golfing not our golf. We enjoy a relaxing 9 holes followed normally by a drink and a sandwich. So far we have avoided the rain which is an achievement in itself this year. We golf every other Thursday with Tee offs between 9:00 and 9:30. The next game is September 14th.

GREY CELLS MATTER - Mary-Anne Unwin [email protected] 905 986 4078

This group of puzzle and word game fans meets on the 2nd Monday of each month, usually at a member's home. The idea is to have fun while giving our brains a bit of a workout to slow down the effects of aging!  It’s non-competitive and no scores are compared or kept. Contact Mary-Anne Unwin at [email protected] or 905-986-4078. This group will be on hiatus from January through March of

2018.

Answer to August Sample Puzzle:"A HUNGRY DONKEY": A donkey was tied to a rope 10-feet long. 20 feet away was a bale of hay that seemed especially appetizing to the donkey. To his delight, he found a way to reach it, and was not disappointed by its quality. How did he reach it? Answer: the other end of the rope was not tied to anything. The donkey was simply able to walk over to the hay (LOL)!

Sample Puzzle for September:"BREAKFAST REBUS" A Rebus is a word, letter, picture or phrase put into interesting orientations to represent common phrases. Can you guess what phrase is represented by this set of sentences?

1.Bob drowned Frosted Flakes.2.Joe buried Cap'n Crunch.3.Sarah threw Rice Krispies off a cliff.4.Emily shot Cocoa Puffs.

Answer: in the October newsletter!

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER (GWCTD) - Carole Matthews [email protected] 905 982 2702

The GWCTD group had a good turnout for our July dinner at Bella Notte Restaurant in Whitby.

We’ll be sending a group email for details of our next meeting, and it should be listed as well on the website calendar. We expect a lot of members to attend our dinners from now through the Fall, and many restaurants in the area have a limited amount of room, so when you get the notice of the dinner, please RSVP early. If we get more interest than the number of seats available, we do keep a wait list in the event of cancellations.

HEALTHY EATING - Suzanne Redford   [email protected] 416 573 0597

If you would like to join us, please contact Suzanne Redford at [email protected]

HIKING - Bill Morrison   [email protected] 905 439 0484Hike locations for September dates are yet to be determined. Check the PROBUS calendar on the website.

Also, group members will soon be asked once again (we had a survey last summer) to provide information on their preferences for the group's activities.  Bill will be sending out an email with some questions, so please take advantage of the opportunity to provide input on the group's direction.

Our opportunities for outings have been expanded. The Whitby/Brooklin PROBUS Walking Group has invited us to join them on their walks each Monday morning.  This offers additional

or alternative activity for our members. The Whitby walks are shorter than ours (1 hour versus our 2- 2.5 hour hikes) and are in urban settings, usually on the Lake Ontario waterfront, while our hikes are primarily held in rural, often forested, settings. Earlier in the winter we had also invited any interested Whitby/Brooklin members to join us on our hikes, so additional benefits are now available to members of both clubs.

NOTE - in the case of all Interest Groups, if you have questions or wish to join, please contact the Coordinator

MUSIC JAM - Bill Walker  [email protected]   905 985 9673

The Music Jam Interest Group is still looking for a few more individuals who play instruments and would love to jam with some of their fellow PROBUS members.  They’d like to get a variety of instruments represented to make it really interesting.

MUSIC – UKULELE - Andy Stevenson [email protected] 905 449 0719The PROBUS Ukulele ABC's (Absolute Beginner Class) finished their Fall 10-week training program and enjoyed a performance of their skills at the November PROBUS meeting. Some members are now jamming with the DUKES, the Port Perry based Durham Ukulele Klub, also led by PROBUS member Andy Stevenson. Congratulations to everyone for your great achievements.

Andy is tied up at the present time but will review the situation again in several months.

OPEN STUDIO – ART - Margaret Adamson [email protected]   905 773 2878

This group continues to be committed to having a designated time for working on their own art, while also having an opportunity to share with other people.

There is plenty of room for new members.  Phil Wooding has volunteered to give some easy guided lessons. His gentle encouragement and skill as an accomplished acrylic painter can get anyone started.

Don't worry about having the right supplies.  We'll help you figure out how to get going without spending a ton of money.

Come visit us one day - see the varied media used.  Some days we work on a painting, plan a new one, draw/sketch, make handmade cards or woven art pieces, ...

Our next series, of 3 sessions, begins on September 11th - every 2nd & 4th Monday (1:00-4:00p.m.) at the Prince Albert United Church Hall.

POKER - Norm Sanford - [email protected]   905 441 1490A poker group is also now being formed.  Please contact Norm Sanford for more information.

THEATRE - Tim Casey [email protected] 647 521 2565Although we haven’t formally started a theatre interest group yet, Bob McLeod has generously offered to coordinate an outing to the musical Anne of Green Gables at the Oshawa Little Theatre in Oshawa on Sunday, December 3rd, at 2:00 pm. Tickets to the show are $25.20 for adults and $13.50 for children/students (tickets are normally $28 for an adult and $15 for children, but we get a group discount). No transportation is being provided. The Oshawa Little Theatre is located about 25 minutes from Port Perry (south on Simcoe to 62 Russett Avenue, one block south of Taunton, west off Simcoe. Free parking.

Come join us to enjoy some amateur theatre at one of the best kept secrets in Durham. The theatre has real padded tiered seats, (not benches), an orchestra pit and a very nice lounge area where we can purchase refreshments before the show and during intermission. Our group can meet in the lounge at about 1:15 to enjoy a glass of wine or a beer before the show and to do a little socializing. Also available is pop, coffee, tea and bottle water, along with some light snacks.

The Oshawa Little Theatre puts on 5 shows a year featuring one comedy, one drama, two musicals and a 3rd musical performed by the youth group. Previous musicals have included Legally Blond, Sweeny Todd and Mary Poppins. The youth group has done Oliver, Guys and Dolls and The Little Mermaid to name a few. The adult group will be performing the musical version of Anne of Green Gables.

The cast and crew are extremely enthusiastic and very talented. After the show feel free to return to the lounge area where you can often meet the cast. Many times I’ve seen grandchildren getting their picture taken with a cast member or a “selfie” as the kids call it today.

I overheard a man saying to his wife after a Mary Poppins performance: “It was as good as Mirvish, a third of the price, a third of the distance and free parking”. This is great value at $25.20 per adult and only $13.50 for Child/Student.

So if you love musical theatre or if you’re a first timer, come out and join us. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Sign-up sheet will be at our monthly membership meeting. For those who have already signed up and those who intend to, please bring your cheque book to the September membership meeting. Make cheques payable to PROBUS Club of Port Perry. We have reserved a block of 55 seats together and already have around 51 members signed up for the event.

PROBUS member contact for the event: Bob McLeod - [email protected] 905-982-1812

PROBUS Travel Interest Group FindsA) SPAIN – PORTUGAL February 10th to March 2nd, 2018

Portugal’s Algarve province, with its magnetic Moorish appeal has become a Mecca for snowbirds trying to escape the harsh reality of winter. It’s also one of Europe’s most picturesque and friendly holiday destinations. The Algarve is what most of us envision the Mediterranean to be. The whitewashed villages cascade into the sea. Cobblestoned streets are lined with outdoor cafes, bistros, wine bars, and markets full of fresh fruits and vegetables. The weather is wonderfully spring like and invigorating.

The Costa del Sol region of southern Spain is remarkable for its diverse landscapes, fabulous beaches and coastal sites as well as a wealth of small villages that dot the shore line. This Mediterranean coastline is one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations, hosting millions of tourists on an annual basis. Villages have grown into robust towns with great restaurants, shopping and nightlife. The area’s history dates back thousands of years and it has developed a unique and warm culture that defines the region.Whether this is your first visit to the Costa del Sol or you have enjoyed its pleasures in the past there is always something new to discover.
