About Process Trend
OverviewUniformance Process Trend is a desktop trending and analysis tool you can use toretrieve and view data from an operating plant or plants. Process Trend istag-based—all information you retrieve and view is based on the tags you select andhow you customize them.
Process Trend is a multiple document interface (MDI) application, which allows youto view up to eight trends and up to 10 analyses at one time. This enables you tocompare trends and analyses across a plant and, by attaching to a remote PHD server,to compare analyses with different plant locations.
You can also view traces from more than one plant on the same plot so you cancompare performance between different operating locations. Process Trend trendstags on different time windows. For example, you can have a time span of two hoursfor all tags, however one tag can have a start time of 4:00 p.m. and an end time of6:00 p.m. while another tag can have a start time of 8:00 p.m. and an end time of10:00 p.m. This time flexibility enables you to gather data that represents the plantoperations over the same time duration, at different periods of the day.
Following is an example of a plot trending eight different tags:

Notes:
• When using the Raw Retrieval Attribute type, a data reduction method called BestFit may be applied. The application of Best Fit depends on the number of datasamples that exist within the requested time period. If the number of actual datasamples exceeds the maximum number of values allowed by Process Trend, thenthe Best Fit reduction will be applied automatically. See the “Visual PHDDevelopers Reference Guide” (PIM3001) for details about Best Fit.
• When using any interval based Retrieval Attribute type (all retrieval types exceptRaw), the Best Fit data reduction may also be applied. In this case, the Best Fitdata reduction will be applied when the requested retrieval interval yields moredata values than Process Trend has allowed. In this instance, the retrieval intervalwill be re-calculated such that the number of samples returned will be less that theallowable maximum. See the “Visual PHD Developers Reference Guide”(PIM3001) for details about Best Fit.

Viewing Data TablesEach plot that you generate has an associated data table that contains the trend plotdata in a spreadsheet format. The information for each tag in the plot is structured inthree continuous columns in the data table. The data table shows the followingdetailed data for each tag on the plot:
• The date and time the tag information was retrieved.
• The tag value.
• The confidence level of the data.
Use the data table when you want to view the exact value associated with a plot andto quickly identify confidence levels and areas that require closer analysis. Theinformation data table is the source data for any comma delimited files that yougenerate. See the Exporting Data section for more information about commadelimited files.

Setting and Viewing Time CharacteristicsYou can modify the time characteristics in trend plots to obtain a different view ofthe plotted data. The time span begin and end times in a plot may vary between tags. However, all tags on a plot must be assigned the same length of time span. Forexample, all of your tags have a two hour range, but one tag data collection periodmight begin at 2:00 p.m. and end at 4:00 p.m., while another tag data collectionperiod might begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 p.m. Both of these settings arevalid.
Working with Time Lags
A time lag represents the time offset value from the current time. This is shown onthe time scroll bar as the distance between the scroll button and the right edge of thescroll bar. Each tag can have a different time lag (also called a time offset value). This time lag value allows the user to review historical data for each selected tag.
Changing Time Spans
The time span setting represents the length of time in the plot x-axis. You can clickthe time span control on the Time Span toolbar and select a Process Trend defaulttime span for the x-axis, or you can create a custom time span using the Plot TagDefinition window.

Creating Power Spectrum Charts
Power Spectrum charts generate a standard frequency analysis chart.
To create a Power Spectrum chart from a trend plot
1. Open the trend plot on which you want to base the Power Spectrum chart.
2. On the Standard toolbar, click the Power Spectrum icon. A Power Spectrumchart is generated using the first selected tag in the trend plot legend as the datasource.
To change and define the tags in a Power Spectrum chart
1. In an open Power Spectrum chart, from the Plot menu, click Add/ModifyAnalysis Tags. The Power Spectrum Tag Definition window appears:
NOTE: The Tag Explorer button on this display does not work with ProfitEmbedded PHD. Profit Tag Explorer or Favorite Tags list must be used to selecttags for plotting.

4. Drag the tag to the Current Tag box in the Power Spectrum Tag Definitionwindow. If the maximum number of eight (8) tags has not been reached, theinformation is updated using the new tag and the new tag appears in the CurrentTag box.
NOTE: A maximum of eight (8) tags is allowed in the Current Tag box. If theCurrent Tag box contains eight (8) tags any tag dragged into the Current Tag boxthereafter is NOT added to the Current Tag box. Consequently, if the tag youwant to chart cannot be added to the Current Tag box, use Profit Tag Explorer orthe Favorite Tags List to change the tag in the chart.
5. In the Current Tag box, click Tag Definition. The Tag Definition window displays the properties for the tag in the PowerSpectrum chart.
6. Click OK.The Tag Definition window closes.
7. In the Current Tag box, click Retrieval. The Retrieval Properties window appears.
8. Set the retrieval properties.See Setting Retrieval Properties for information about setting the retrievalproperties.
9. Click OK.The Retrieval Properties window closes and you are returned to the PowerSpectrum Tag Definition window.

Interfacing to Process Trend
OverviewYou can develop a programmatic interface to Process Trend. Applications can invokeProcess Trend by:
• Passing trend input information via a command line interface.
• Interfacing with a previously activated Process Trend, passing trend inputinformation using DDE.
VB Setup for Using DDE to Pass Information to ProcessTrendThe following example shows the setup from a VB application when you are usingDDE to pass information to Process Trend:
Private Sub Label1_Change()
On Error GoTo error_label1
‘// if nothing in label, exit sub
If Label1.Caption = "" Then Exit Sub
‘// setup label DDE attributes to talk to processtrend
Label1.LinkTopic = "Process Trend forPHD|tpdtrend"
Label1.LinkItem = "labelDDE"
Label1.LinkMode = 2
Label1.LinkPoke
Exit sub
error_label1:
If Err.Number = 282 Then ' no app running
ret = Shell("c:\Program Files\Honeywell TPI\ProcessTrend\phdtrend.exe vbNormalFocus)
Resume
Else
Msgbox err.number & ": " & err.description
End If
End Sub
This exampleassumes that the VBapplication has acontrol named label1.When a change eventoccurs in label1, theexample code isexecuted.
Interfacing to Process Trend

Note: In the previous code:
• label1.linkitem - represents the process trend control used to accept the DDE input.
• label1.linktopic - represents the running name of Process Trend followed by theLinkTopic (as defined in Process Trend).
• label1.caption - represents the execution string to be processed by Process Trend.
Calling OptionsThe calling options for executing the VB setup are:
• Passing Filenames to Process Trend (used only when invoking Process Trend).
• Passing Tagnames to Process Trend (applicable to initial invocation or interfacingwith running Process Trend - DDE interface).
• Passing Actions to Process Trend (applicable to interfacing with running ProcessTrend only) - available only via DDE interface.
Passing Filenames to Process Trend
This is used only when invoking Process Trend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions
Retrieval Requests1. When I am trending tags using RAW data retrieval, the shape of the curve
changes whenever I zoom in or out. In some cases, if a bad value is displayed onthe trend, the bad value gap seems to change as well, getting smaller whenzooming in and larger when zooming out. What causes this?
Answer: When requesting RAW data retrieval, the amount of data that will bereturned is unknown due to data compression techniques being applied to thecollected data. Process Trend has a maximum number of data samples per tagthat can be processed. If the number of data samples is greater than thismaximum number, then a data reduction called Best Fit is automatically applied. This reduction will preserve the critical points of a curve, such as the high andlow values, as well as bad value indication. As users analyze specific areas on thecurve via zooming, a new data request is made; the Best Fit algorithm is appliedagain, returning a higher resolution set of data. As users zoom in, the Best Fitalgorithm will be re-applied until the number of raw data samples is less than themaximum number of allowable samples. See the “Visual PHD DevelopersReference Guide” (PIM3001) for details about Best Fit.
2. What is the maximum number of samples that can be processed for each tagbeing traced?
Answer: For linear curves, the maximum number of samples before the Best Fitalgorithm is invoked is 2000 data samples; for step curves, the maximum numberof samples is 1000.
3. When I am retrieving averages on a 1 minute interval, if I increase the time spanto 30 days, the retrieval interval frequency displayed on the legend of the plotchanges to 1298 seconds. Why?
Answer: When interval based data is requested, if the interval value, when usedwith the requested time span, results in more samples than allowed for ProcessTrend, then the retrieval interval is automatically re-calculated to return anallowable number of samples. This is performed automatically so that the userdoes not have to change both the time span and the retrieval interval whenmodifying the initial request. Since the user has requested a new time span, it isassumed that the time span should be given higher priority than the retrievalinterval.
Frequently Asked Questions

Retrieval Times4. Can I have multiple time axis scales? That is, when I plot tag1 and tag2 on the
same plot, can each of the tags be plotted against a different time?
Answer: Absolutely. While the time span for each of the tags must be the same, for example each tag’s time span must be 2 hours, the start and end times foreach tag can be different. These start and end times can be modified directly inthe Plot Tag Definition dialog screen, or via the time scrollbar on the toolbar.Select the tag to affect and the adjust the times.
5. Can I have the same tag plotted multiple times on one plot?
Answer: Yes; this is usually done specifically for looking at one tag againstmultiple time spans.
Plot Operations1. Can I unlock only 1 tag on a plot?
Answer: No, the lock/unlock is for the entire plot. If multiple plots are beingdisplayed, each plot maintains its own lock/unlock status.
2. How do I change the physical characteristics of a plot? I want to change thebackground color of the trace area.
Answer: See the section “Setting Plot Characteristics” for details on changingthe plot characteristics.
3. Can I manipulate the time scrollbar without using the mouse?
Answer: Yes; if the hairline cursor is not on display, the right and left arrowswill simulate the same action as clicking on the right or left arrows beside thescrollbar. If the <Shift> or <Ctrl> and the right or left arrow buttons are pressed, the result is the same as clicking in the time scrollbar. Additionally, if the up ordown arrows are pressed, then a new timespan is selected, based on the order ofselection in the toolbar timespan list control. The up arrow will increase thetimespan, while the down arrow will decrease the timespan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Uniformance Process Trend User Guide • 125
Plot Printing1. When I have multiple plots displayed, can I print more than one plot at a time, or
must I request multiple print requests, one per plot?
Answer: Printing is performed on an individual plot only. There is no way toprint multiple plots with a single request.
Hairline Cursor1. When I position the hairline cursor, all of the values and times in the legend
change, such that all of the times for all of the tags displayed in the legend are thesame. Is this correct?
Answer: Yes; the function of the hairline cursor is to show the time valuerepresented by the hairline cursor as well as the value of the intersection betweenthe hairline and each tag’s trace. If tags are being traced against a different timewindow, then the time values displayed in the legend will represent theindividual times for each of the traces.
2. How can I manipulate the Hairline Cursor for fine tuning?
Answer: When the hairline cursor is displayed, use the arrow buttons (right andleft) to move the hairline 1 second at a time; use the <Ctrl> and the right or leftarrow buttons to move by 1 minute increments.

A set of operating system files, treated as a unit, in which an Oracle server stores aset of data dictionary tables and user tables. A database requires three types of files:database files, redo log files, and control files.
The disk space corresponding to this set of files.
A subset of database objects necessary to support a single database application.
In SQL*Forms, a field attribute signifying a field that corresponds to a column in thetable represented by the block.
database client
A client, usually an application or utility, running on a PC or other computer, thatrequests the services of a database on a remote computer (host).
database server
The node or computer at which the Oracle Server kernel runs. The database serverholds the database, runs the Oracle Server kernel, is not a MS-DOS PC or Macintosh(but could be an OS/2 PC), and runs a multitask operating system.
data quantizing and scaling
A PHD data storage processing option that saves half of the archive file space neededfor 32 bit floating point values by storing them as scaled 16 bit integers.
data smoothing
A PHD data storage processing option that removes random noise from raw data bysmoothing it with a first order exponential decay filter and a feed forward digitalfilter.
Global User Station (GUS)
Honeywell’s Windows NT-based operator workstation for the TPS (TotalPlantSolution) system.
Glossary

HCI PHD server
A component of the Honeywell TPS system. The HCI PHD Server provides an OLEfor Process Control (OPC) compliant interface. This interface is used by TPS andusers to access current tag values maintained by the PHD system.
histogram
A picture of the data (a bar graph with no space between the adjacent bars) showingthe comparative frequency of the measurements (as in SPC histogram, available withthe Uniformance Desktop Tool - Process Trend).
host
The PHD server that is installed on a computer that is part of the plant network orintranet. Uniformance Desktop users must specify a host name, user name, andpassword to log on to the PHD server.
main PHD server
A server containing data from one or more process level servers. A main server andall of its associated process level servers use a single Oracle RDBMS.
manual input tag
A tag for which the value has been manually entered either by a program or an enduser, rather than an RDI automatically collecting the value from a source system. You can use manual input tags to enter data such as:
• lab test results
• tank gauge readings
• manual flow entries
• readings or calculations from application programs
• other non-collected data
PHD
Process History Database
Glossary
130 • Uniformance Process Trend User Guide
PHD server
Also called PHD host.
Stores all data collected from a source system and services requests for data retrieval.Contains the Real-Time Database and the History Database (archive).
Receives data from one or more RDIs. The data is first placed in the real-timedatabase, then stored to the history database. The PHD server is part of the plantnetwork or intranet. As a Uniformance Desktop user, you will need to identify thisserver by name to retrieve PHD data.
process level server
A PHD Server that collects and stores data directly from a single source system (suchas a Honeywell TotalPlant Process Network (TPN)). Typically, the Process LevelServer stores high frequency data for use by applications, operators, and engineersinvolved with the daily operations of process units.
PHD system
The Process History Database components that collect and store history data. Thesecomponents include:
• an Oracle Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)
• a Real-Time Data Interface (RDI)
• a PHD Server
process tag
Process tags include real-time:
• Continuous and discrete production data.
• Process performance data.
• Process-related data.
raw data
Raw data is actual data that is held in the queue and stored in the archive. Raw data isalso referred to as actual stored data. Data may have been processed (if options suchas smoothing or compression have been set), but includes no interpolation (filtering, resampling, or other actions that can be performed on the data by PHD).Raw data in the archive includes a value, timestamp, and confidence factor.
Glossary
Uniformance Process Trend User Guide • 131
reduced data
Data retrieved from the queue and archive which is then processed with reductioncalculations in an application such as Process Trend or Excel.
reduction calculation
Calculations performed on data retrieved from the queue and archive, in anapplication such as Process Trend or an Excel worksheet. The calculations includeAVERAGE, DELTA, DELTAATINTERVAL, FIRST, FIRSTATINTERVAL,LAST, LASTATINTERVAL, MAXIMUM, MAXIMUMATINTERVAL,MINIMUM, MINIMUMATINTERVAL, REGRESSION CONSTANT,REGRESSIONDEVIATION, REGRESSIONSLOPE, andSTANDARDDEVIATION.
retrieved data
Raw data retrieved from the queue and archive which is then processed and used inan application such as Process Trend or Excel.
SCAN archive files
Files in which archive data is stored. A rolling set of files (configurable in size andnumber) containing the history database. These are called the SCAN archive files, asthey are the files in which scanned raw data is stored. Typically, each SCAN archivefile contains 1-3 months of data, but this value varies between systems.
server
• The provider of services requested by a client.
• A process providing services to other cooperating processes.
• Oracle software that handles the functions required for concurrent, shared dataaccess to an Oracle database. The server portion receives and processes SQL andPL/SQL statements originating from client applications. The computer thatmanages the server portion must be optimized for its duties.
Glossary

server process
1. A process in charge of communicating with the user process and interacting withOracle to carry out requests of the associated user process.
For example, if a user queries some data that is not already in the databasebuffers of the SGA, the associated server process reads the proper data blocksfrom the data files into the SGA.
Oracle can be configured to vary the number of user processes per server process. In a dedicated server configuration, a server process handles requests for a singleuser process. A multi-threaded server configuration allows many user processesto share a small number of server processes, thus minimizing the number ofserver processes and maximizing the use of available system resources. On somesystems, the user and server processes are separate, while on others they arecombined into a single process. If a system uses the multi-threaded server, or ifthe user and server processes run on different machines, the user and serverprocesses must be separate.
2. In SQL*Net, an Oracle process that receives SQL statements from the client andsends them to the Oracle database on the server machine. The server parses andexecutes the SQL statements, and sends data and status values back to the client.
standard deviation threshold
The amount a value may deviate from its regression estimate without beingconsidered a gross error. The amount is equal to the standard deviation multiplied bythe tag configuration parameter Gr Error Sigma Limit.
Statistical Process Control (SPC)
Statistical Process Control (as in the SPC analysis chart available with theUniformance Desktop Process Trend).
tag
An entity that is being collected and historized. Equivalent to a parameter on thesource system (for example, FC100.PV).
PHD uses three types of tags:
• Process Tags - data collected by PHD real-time interfaces (point.parameter)
• Virtual Tags - calculations based on collected, manual input and other virtual tags
• Manual Input Tags - data collected and input manually into PHD tags

Uniformance desktop
The Honeywell family of workstation-based tools provides access to PHD data aswell as data from other Uniformance applications. The Uniformance Desktopprovides tools for analysis, trending, reporting, incident replay, and processupset/error diagnostics.
Uniformance Desktop tools are installed on a workstation (including a HoneywellGlobal User Station (GUS)) connected to the plant network or intranet and runningWindows 95 or Windows NT.
virtual tag
A tag value generated from a user-defined calculation. The calculation can be basedon collected, manual input, and other virtual tags.
Virtual tags can be used for:
• Filling in missing instrumentation.
• Providing redundant measurements and actual versus theoretical comparisons.
• Performing continuous mass/volume conversions.
Tracking unit and furnace efficiencies or other complex calculations.
