Dear Colleagues: I just returned last week from the NIGP forum in Orlando, Florida. It was a great experience learning new things and meeting new people. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you’ll never be in this business long enough to stop learning; and attendance at this year’s Forum was certainly no exception. In any training situation, I try to write down any ideas and comments I hear that are new tome. At the Forum this year I did write plenty. I am looking forward to our chapter meeting this month so that we can share some of the things that we experienced at Forum. The NIGP picnic last month was also a great success. Our attendance this year was double what it was at our first picnic just two years ago. It was so nice to see so many people come and eat, visit and enjoy themselves. This annual event has now become a tradition and should continue. I hope the attendance will continue to grow in the future. It’s a great opportunity to associate and mingle with fellow procurement professionals in a non-professional environment, get to know each other better, exchange ideas, or simply talk informally. We’ll see you soon as the September chapter meeting. I want to thank each of you for all you do to support our chapter and our great profession. Dear Colleagues:

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you’ll never be in this business long enough to stop learning; and attendance at this year’s Forum was certainly no exception. In any training situation, I try to write down any ideas and comments I hear that are new tome. At the Forum this year I did write plenty. The NIGP picnic last month was also a great success. Our attendance this year was double what it was at our first picnic just two years ago. We’ll see you soon as the September chapter meeting. I want to thank each of you for all you do to support our chapter and our great profession.

Chapter Annual Elections

Ever thought of running for a position on our board, but just couldn’t bring yourself to commit? Let me

list a few reasons to help you make the jump:

1. You bring something to the table that no other individual does. Your experience, insights, and tal-

ents would shed new light and add strength to our chapter.

2. It will help your career. Anyone who has served on the board is better networked and has added a

valuable service component to their resume.

3. You will grow. Stepping outside of your comfort zone will allow you to grow professionally in ways

that you could not otherwise.

4. You will make great friends.

What excuses popped into your heads? Admit it, you just had excuses immediately come into your

mind as you read this and you felt just a bit guilty for being a partaker of the services of the chapter and

having never given back. Well, I have just the solution for you. Please contact me (phone: 385-646-4564

or email: [email protected] and inquire about how you can assist our fine chapter.

I encourage you to join with us and better our chapter and your career.

Thank you,

Jared Gardner

Nancy Orton, CPM– Deputy Director, State of Utah Division of Purchasing

Nancy is one of two Deputy Director’s for the State of Utah Division of Pur-

chasing and has given over 30 years of service to State Purchasing. In case you

are wondering, Nancy was hired by the State at the ripe old age of 13! :)

Throughout her career with State Purchasing, Nancy has been responsible for

managing a variety of commodities and has acquired extensive experience

with solicitation processes, contract administration procedures, and is extreme-

ly knowledgeable in our state’s procurement laws as they apply to both the

procurement process and contract administration. Nancy has earned her Certi-

fied Purchasing Manager endorsement through the Institute for Supply Man-

agement (ISM) and has been instrumental in State Purchasing receiving the

National Purchasing Institute’s Achievement of Excellence in Procurement for

the past 3 years.

In addition to her duties as a Deputy Director, Nancy has taken on the respon-

sibility of acting as Purchasing’s agency procurement coordinator. As an agen-

cy procurement coordinator, Nancy spends one-on-one time with agency’s ex-

ecutive management and their procurement personnel in order to help them

understand the State of Utah Procurement Code requirements, solicitation pro-

cesses and procedures, and assists agencies in resolving contract administra-

tion issues. She was also recently voted the Utah Division of Purchasing’s

Manager of the Year for 2013.
