Why Video?

Page 3: Produce and Publish Training Videos on the Web

“Let's use an example to compare a traditional batch-and-queue process to a single-piece flow process. Our example has three processing “stations” that each transform a piece of work-in-process until it is complete. Management has determined that it is most efficient to move/process parts in batches of 10. To complete a single batch of 10, it takes 30 seconds. Now let’s do the same process using single-piece flow. After a single piece of WIP is processed at station one, it is moved to station 2, who begin process two immediately, after which it is moved to station 3, where it is completed. This method is repeated for each item. When done this way, it takes 12 seconds to process 10 pieces, a savings of 18 seconds, a 60% reduction in total production time.”

HOW DO YOU CREATE VIDEOS?

Page 13: Produce and Publish Training Videos on the Web

Types of Videos

1. The talking head - just a person talking to you2. “Person demonstrating how to do

something” video. 3. PowerPoint slide show video - is pretty much

just … a PowerPoint slide show but in a video – usually with someone narrating the voice-over.

4. Screen cast videos like you saw on Lynda and on Home Brew Audio

Page 14: Produce and Publish Training Videos on the Web

Types of Videos

5. Animations with voiceovers - Sketch videos (ASAP Science video)- Explainer animations

-- GoAnimate (goanimate.com)6. Some hybrid of the above – I recommend this!

Page 15: Produce and Publish Training Videos on the Web

Creating The Videos

• The Talking Head and the “Person demonstrating how to do something” video – actual device or video camera

• Slide Show - Don’t even need a camera!– Just use screen capture software like Camtasia

Studio, Screen Flow or the free Jing• Screen casting videos - same as above

Capture the video

Page 16: Produce and Publish Training Videos on the Web

Creating The Videos

• Actually creating a product– Title text– Combining multiple bits of video on a timeline using

video software (we’ll talk)– Editing out bad takes, shots, etc.– Adding Audio– Put it all together as one file

• “Render” video file (can take a long time!)– mp4! (maybe mov)

Produce the video

Page 17: Produce and Publish Training Videos on the Web

Creating The Videos

• iMovie– Mac only. It’s pretty decent– Learning curve

• Vegas– Windows only. My preferred program

• Camtasia– Mac or Windows: For screen cast videos– Complete production capabilities
