This year we have continued to deliver a diverse and engaging curriculum that reflects the needs of our students and wider community.
Our unique senior SUCCESS pathways empower our Year 11 and 12 students to actively work towards their future endeavours, whether that be tertiary study or transitioning into the workforce. This year we continued to celebrate the success of a number of our students who successfully transitioned into the workforce at our Graduation ceremony. We are so proud of their achievements. Academically, we continue to celebrate the many students receiving early entry offers into a number of universities.
2019 also marked the introduction of our transformed Aboriginal Education program. We were proud to successfully host the Minto Community of Schools (MCoS) NAIDOC event that saw over 500 students from across our network visit our school to take part and celebrate our indigenous Culture. Our MCoS Aboriginal Education Team have been working hard on designing an innovative Aboriginal Education Curriculum that we are excited to launch across our key learning areas on 2020.
We are also enormously proud of the success of our public speaking and debating teams, as well as the popular Café which have been set-up and run by our senior Hospitality students. We have so many examples of outstanding students success in every classroom, every day at Sarah.
For this reason, we take every opportunity to continually reflect, evaluate and action initiatives across many areas, including Wellbeing; Teaching and Learning; as well as continuing to deliver engaging educational programs to our students.
I look forward to continuing to work closely with our students, staff and community members to ensure that Sarah Redfern High School continues to ensue excellence for all our students as they prepare themselves for the world beyond school.

Position: School Captain I wanted to be a school leader because: I wanted to put myself out there and become more confident. The best thing about Sarah Redfern HS is the fact that the students don’t judge each other based on the items we have – the students value friendship over money.
Advice I would give to my 13 year old self would be to just put your hand up in class and speak out.
Don’t be afraid, and continue to believe in yourself.

I wanted to be a school leader because: I wanted to help better the school and community as a whole and becoming a school leader was the best way to do so. The best thing about Sarah Redfern HS is the diversity of students and teachers. There are people from various backgrounds and every individual is unique and interesting.
Advice I would give to my 13 year old self would be to enjoy your time at school because time flies. Take
everything seriously but still have fun and take part in what you can, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there!

Advice I would give to my 13 year old self: never let anyone doubt you and keep pushing yourself to give a

Our 2020 Senior Leadership team was inducted at the recent Year 12 Graduation Ceremony. All students who stood for election are to be congratulated for doing a fine job of presenting themselves and their ideas to their fellow students. For some of them, simply nominating and completing the election process was a step outside of their comfort zone. Such bravery is to be applauded. Congratulations to our Captains and Vice Captains.

Four students represented Sarah Redfern High School at the NAIDOC Speak up contest. Taleah F, Tyiesha H Jeremy M and Tameisha S M participated in this inter school competition and did us proud. Their speeches were built around the theme "Voice, Treaty Truth" which is this year's NAIDOC theme. Well done and congratulations to all! You did it! Keep up the good work!

Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Science Award 2019 (For Excellence in Student Achievement in Year 11 Science)

Each year the students of Sarah Redfern High School achieve something positive and productive in the field of Science. This year, Siam R of Year 11 Chemistry and Physics received the 2019 Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Science Award. The award was given on the 30th of October 2019 at the Campbelltown Arts Centre. Teachers, principals, families and friends were present that night to celebrate Siam’s and other students’ achievements. Special guests and speakers including Dr. Inken Martin Scientist from Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute were also present. Siam was nominated by the science staff at school as he has demonstrated the highest achievement in scientific studies throughout Year 11. Siam is a magnificent student exhibiting excellence in senior Chemistry and Physics. He has a great fondness for studying Medicine in the future. Siam shows that he has a natural aptitude for Chemistry and Physics. He is a logical thinker and truly represents the values of public education. Siam R will now have the opportunity to visit the Institute to learn first-hand about its activities and about a career in science under the supervision of leading researchers and Scientists at the Victor Chang Institute Sydney. Congratulations to Siam on his success in achieving the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Science Award and we (the Science department and school community) would like to thank Siam for his contribution and wish him success in his future endeavors.

Students from Year 7 enjoyed an excursion into the city to meet their Mentoring Mates from Clayton Utz and Daystar on Friday 22nd November. We would like to thank Clayton Utz and Daystar for helping our Year 7 students to build confidence and relationships with their mentors through their letter writing.

LOST IN JAPAN – A Society and Culture Adventure Konnichiwa!! One of the many words learnt by the Year 11 Society and Culture class on their visit to the Japan Foundation on the 3rd of September. The excursion was an experience that helped the students to better understand intercultural communication, and the different customs and values across these cultures. The students learnt the importance of different styles of traditional clothing, such as the kimono and yukata. Through the Japan foundation they were all able to learn new Japanese words, the way to be a guest in a Japanese home and how to wrap a furoshiki. It was an amazing experience, thank you for having Sarah Redfern HS students and being an amazing host Michie Akahane. Domo arigato gozaimashita!

SENIOR PDHPE IS NOT ALL THEORY!
T erm 4 welcomed a fresh batch of Year 12 students ready to take on the rigour of
Stage 6 PDHPE. The Preliminary course had been challenging but students had
renewed focus and were excited by the rumour that this term’s topic ‘Factors Affecting
Performance ’ invo lved some much anticipated PRACTICAL lessons. Some of the
excitement dulled when the Year 12s realised that ‘practical’ meant FUNCTIONAL
FITNESS and ‘during class’, meant 8AM sessions in the school gym. Students are
studying types of training, physiological effect of training and understanding impact of how training
impacts an athlete. They will be required to design a training program and to do so, needed some insight
into functional training utilised in popular Spartan events, CrossFit and F45.
Although initially wary of the early wake up call, all
students were actively participating, motivating each other, and learning various exercises and
using new types of equipment. Although the next day DOMs (which students had learnt was the

accumulation of lactic acid, a by-product of their training) presented issues for some, it
was brilliant to witness the 12 PDHPE class and some special guests Year 12s in the gym
pushing their bodies to the limit.

I n addition, to functional training students were learning more about
different types of exercise and fitness. In Year 11, students had studied
Outdoor Recreation and links had been made to between the challenge of high
ropes courses and that of fitness obstacle events such as Tough Mudder and
Spartan. To expand their experience of types of training, skills and energy
systems and for students to understand the high demand events like Spartan place
on the body, 12 PDHPE enjoyed a trip to
TreeTops Western Sydney, a high ropes adventure park.
Students were taken through the technical
aspects of high ropes, being more than 200m off the ground, knowing how to
connect on and off safety ropes and communicating with their peers took
priority. A little nervous, students took to the trees. Each course had its challenges

On Wednesday the 13th of November, Gen STEM students were invited to Google Sydney Headquarters! Rising early to travel by train, we made our commute to Central station, then by tram to Pyrmont Bay. The session began with a seminar in which Google staff (software engineers, data scientist, designers and experts spoke about their roles and their experiences. They also talked about the current development and future technologies. After the seminar, we had a chance to tour around the main building (they have three buildings). From the ground floor to the 5th floor. We were able to discover Easter eggs and little surprises everywhere. We experienced how pleasant and relaxing it is to work in a highly technologically advanced work space with cafes, mini kitchens, large kitchen, nap zones, sleeping pods, hammocks, comfy beds, ergonomically designed furniture, baristas, chef, cooks. We saw fitness area, gym, musical instruments, play area, billiard table, ping-pong table, bicycle, chess set, and piano where you can use it anytime. It does not look like an office but more of a home. The staff seems to be relaxed and motivated as they were working, collaborating, having a meeting or even cooking their own food in a fully functional kitchen. There are different kinds of cafes, restaurant and eating places you can choose according to your tastes or mood. The staff told us that the most important person in that building is not their boss but the baristas. Although their boss is not that bossy! We love to be working in this kind of a workplace.

Students from our Support Unit showcased their amazing abilities when they performed with the D’Arts Dance Ensemble in the 2019 Schools Spectacular. Mohamed, Aaron, Casey, Skye-Lee, Allenah, Nadra, and Akif showed dedication and commitment during intensive rehearsals and the excitement of performance days, and were fantastic ambassadors for our school. Well done to these students and thanks to Ms Haines and the staff who made this possible.

Jackson P (Year 10) was lucky enough to complete his work experience at Sarah Redfern Primary School with their two General Assistants, Mick and Chris. Jackson enjoyed his time there and was well liked by all. Great job Jackson!

On the 19th of October, 2019, the Interact Club of Sarah Redfern High School took part in the 24 Hour Walk Against Cancer at the Campbelltown Athletic Stadium. Members of the club raised over $400 alone by selling raffle tickets. Participants also helped the Ingleburn Rotary Club in their barbeque; refusing to let the windy conditions put a damper in the sales made for the cause. Overall, the event was a success; everyone found the day to be an enjoyable and fulfilling experience and would definitely participate in next year’s walk. We hope to see more people take part with us next time!
